Vo1 202010 October, 2020 ETZ CHAIM ROOTS 2 From The Rabbi Succot, the Jewish Thanksgiving, the Octoberfest par excellence has arrived! But this year’s celebration stands out from all others. Usually at this point in the year our family would be checking our guest list determining whom we would invite to our Succah each day and night. The pandemic, of course changes our usual plans. But all is not lost. Just as we found a way to celebrate Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we will find a way to rejoice on Succot. While the pandemic may have curtailed our flesh and blood guest list, Judaism maintains a tradition known as Ushpizin . Literally, guests, Ushpizim, refers to imaginary guests from Jewish history whom we invite to our Succahs. Isaac Luria the sixteenth century mystic introduced this custom. He based it upon a passage in the Zohar, the classic tome of Jewish mysticism, known also as Kabbalah : “When a person sits in the abode of the shadow of faith, the Divine Presence spreads Her wings over him from above, and Abraham and five other righteous ones make their abode with him” ( Emor 103b). The Zohar adds, “He must also gladden the poor, because the portion of those [imaginary] guests whom he invites must go to the poor” (ibid. 104a). These days the customary number of imaginary guests stands at seven. Each day we invite another imaginary guest: We invite Abra- ham the first day of Succot, and Isaac the second day. Jacob the third day, Joseph the fourth, Moses the fifth, and Aaron the sixth. Finally, we invite David to join us in the Succah on the final day of the Festival. But why these seven? First, all seven stand as heroes of the Bible. Each is famous for a desired trait: Abraham for his hospitality and kindness. Isaac for the courage to preserve the spiritual breakthroughs of his father. Jacob for his truth. That is, he battled to under- stand the truth of his identity. The Rabbis cite Joseph for his righteousness, time and again resisting the impulse to sin and saving his family from famine. Moses, of course, brought the Torah down from Heaven and led the Jewish people through the Wilderness for forty years. Aaron served as the first High Priest, establishing a tradition of ritual service to the Holy Blessed One. David secured the Land of Israel from the Philistines, established Jerusalem as G-d’s city, the eternal capitol of Israel, and brought the Ark and the Tent of Meeting to Jerusalem. The Sages teach the Messiah will be a scion of the House of David. In addition, the Succah serves as a symbol of exile, as the Torah reminds that the Eternal housed us in Succahs as we wandered through the Wilderness for forty years. All seven Ushpizin spent time in exile, yet they maintained their Jewish identities and per- formed Mitzvot. Each was reinforced by their study of Torah, and the Succah represents those forty years the Children of Israel spent in the Wilderness inculcating the lessons of Torah. Each was sustained by faith and as mentioned above, the mystical literature refers to the Succah as “the shade of faith.” Chag Succot sameach!
