I spent the last three summers learning traditional dance- drumming in Ghana, West Africa. I focus primarily on two schools that I have significant recent experience with: the Dagbe Arts Centre in Kopeyia and the Dagara Music and Arts Center in Medie. While at Dagbe, I studied the music and dance of the Anlo-Ewe ethnic group, a people who live primarily in the Volta region of South-eastern Ghana, but who also inhabit neighboring countries as far as Togo and Benin. I took classes and lessons with the staff as well as with the director of Dagbe, Emmanuel Agbeli, a teacher and performer of Ewe dance-drumming. His father, Godwin Agbeli, founded the Dagbe Arts Centre in order to teach others, including foreigners, the musical styles, dances, and diverse artistic cultures of the Ewe people. The Dagara Music and Arts Center was founded by Bernard Woma, a master drummer and gyil (xylophone) player. The DMC or Dagara Music Center is situated in the town of Medie just outside of Accra. Mr. Woma hosts primarily international students at his compound, focusing on various musical styles, including his own culture, the Dagara, in addition music and dance of the Dagbamba, Ewe, and Ga ethnic groups. -

Akpanglo-Narte y2 1Office of the Vice-President (Academic), Regent University College of Science & Technology, Accra, Ghana 2Department of Applied Linguistics, University of Education, Winneba, Ghana Abstract The phenomenon of language endangerment and, ultimately, language loss is considered in regard to indigenous Ghanaian languages. It is established that two languages, namely, Ghanaian English (GhE) and Akan, especially the Twi dialect, and to a small degree, Ewe, are slowly killing off the smaller Ghanaian languages. For instance, in 1970 almost all Winneba natives spoke Efutu (Ewutu) as their first language. By 2010, 40 years later, only approximately 50% of children born to the Winneba natives speak Efutu as a first language. About 30% of these children speak no Efutu at all. Interestingly, medium-sized languages such as Ga, Dangme and Nzema are also slowly losing grounds to the three languages cited. Meanwhile there are some dozen Ghanaian languages that have less than 1000 estimated speakers each but which have held their own for a century. It is concluded that the closer a language community is to the major urban centers, the more likely it is to be endangered. It is further concluded that the language policy of the Ghana Government is contributing to the loss of Ghanaian languages. Kojo was born on the 5th April 2004, so that makes him 4 years old at the moment. Kojo is fit and healthy and he has plenty of energy. He is tall and just about the right size for a 4 year old and of course, his mum and dad think that he is just lovely! Kojo likes being outside either riding his bike, playing football and going to the park. He has lots of toys – but his favourites are his cars. Kojo just loves cars - small ones, large ones, fast ones, slow ones, electronic ones, push along ones, ones with wheels and even ones without wheels 3 Kojo just loves cars! 4 Kojo lives in a town called Newton, with his mum and dad. Kojo’s mum is called Pat and his dad is Samuel, but most people call him Sam for short. They are both from sunny Ghana, in West Africa, and they speak both English and Twi. They left Ghana many years ago, in 1990, and came to live and work in Britain, and now they live in Newton. Kojo’s dad is a chemist and before Kojo became their son, his mum worked on the computers in the College in Newton. -

FUNCTIONAL AND PASTING PROPERTIES OF PRODUCTS OF WHITE AND YELLOW CASSAVA Onyeneke, Esther-Ben Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Science, Imo State University Email: estyninika@ gmail.com ABSTRACT This study evaluated the pasting properties of selected products; fufu, garri and tapioca made from yellow cassava (Manihot utilisima Crantz) and white cassava (Manihot dulcis Crantz) products. The cassava products were obtained from the National Root Crops Research Institute, Umudike, Abia State and was processed in food science and technology and nutrition and dietetics laborstory, Imo state university. The functional and pasting result showed that among the studied finished cassava products, the fermented cassava flour had the highest water absorption capacity (WAC) 4.4g/g as compared to values of 3.75g/g for garri and 2.85g/g for tapioca.The water absorption capacities of the white cassava products were in the range of 2.79±0.01to 4.34±0.14g/g with white cassava tapioca having the least value (2.79±0.0g/g) and the white cassava flour having the highest value (4.34±0.14). Some significant differences (p<0.05) existed between the water absorption capacities value of the match pairs (similar products) of white and yellow cassava varieties, with the exception of the garri samples. The oil absorption capacities (OAC) of the yellow cassava products were in the range of 1.94±0.03 to 2.91±0.01g/g with yellow cassava tapioca having the least value (1.94±0.03g/g) e and the yellow cassava flour having the highest value (2.91±0.01g/g). -

International Journal of English Language and Linguistics Research Vol.5, No.3, pp. 49-63, June 2017 ___Published by European Centre for Research Training and Development UK (www.eajournals.org) ENGLISH EXPRESSIONS IN GHANA’S PARLIAMENT Halimatu Sardia Jibril and Nana Yaw Ofori Gyasi Accra College of Education, Accra Koforidua Technical University, Koforidua ABSTRACT: This paper takes a look at the English language spoken on the floor of parliament by Ghanaian parliamentarians. It attempts to ascertain the English features of Ghanaian parliamentarians and whether the identified features can be described as Ghanaian English. The study was guided by the syntactic features given as typical of WAVE (Bokamba, 1991) and the grammatical description of African Englishes (Schmied, 1991) and a careful reading of the Hansard which is the daily official report of parliamentary proceeding. It is revealed that the English spoken by Ghanaian parliamentarians has identifiable Ghanaian features that can support the claim that their English is typically Ghanaian. It plays very useful roles in the lives of people and nations across the world. Studies have shown that English is the most commonly spoken and taught foreign language in the world today. In every country in the world recently, English is at least used by some people among the population for some purposes. It is interesting to note that English is a very important language in Francophone West Africa such as Togo (Awuku, 2015); it plays a major role in the Middle East such as Kuwait (Dashti, 2015); and some companies in Japan have adopted English as an in-house lingua franca (Inagawa, 2015). -

Hopi Crop Diversity and Change

CLEVELAND Center for People, Food, and Environment 344 South Third Ave. Thcson, AZ 85701 ABSTRACT.-There is increasing interest in conserving indigenous crop genetic diversity ex situ as a vital resource for industrial agriculture. However, crop diver sity is also important for conserving indigenously based, small-scale agriculture and the farm communities which practice it. Conservation of these resources may best be accomplished, therefore, by ensuring their survival in situ as part of local farming communities like the Hopi. The Hopi are foremost among Native Ameri can farmers in the United States in retaining their indigenous agriculture and folk crop varieties (FVs), yet little is known about the dynamics of change and persis tence in their crop repertoires. The purpose of our research was to investigate agricultural crop diversity in the form of individual Hopi farmers' crop reper toires, to establish the relative importance of Hopi FVs and non·Hopi crop vari eties in those repertoires, and to explore the reasons for change or persistence in these repertoires. We report data from a 1989 survey of a small (n "" 50), oppor tunistic sample of Hopi farmers and discuss the dynamics of change based on cross·sectional comparisons of the data on crop variety distribution, on farmers' answers to questions about change in their crop repertoires, and on the limited comparisons possible with a 1935 survey of Hopi seed sources. Because ours is a small, nonprobabilistic sample it is not possible to make valid extrapolations to Hopi farmers in general.
