In addition, Batman EternalEarth Animal Man: Evolve or Die! (the New 52) Volume 5 World's Endand The New Futures End all ended with their last issues 52, 26, and 48 respectively in order to set up the events of Convergence. There is theoretically, however, a common ancestor that existed millions of years ago. The uprising in the Red is only given a couple of issues to really be told, and it probably needed at least 2 more to really be what it needed to be. Buddy was injured during the battle, and despite the power of the group, even with the additions of Starman and Bizarrothey had to retreat. Overall, Lemire's Animal Man was an enjoyable read with just a bit of a bump midway through with the overly long Swamp Thing crossover. There's nothing exactly innovative or exciting here, but "Evolve or Die" does a good job of closing up the plot threads introduced in previous volumes. In Trinity 13, antimatter Ultraman, Owlman and Superwoman were banished to an alternate subdimension by Superman Animal Man: Evolve or Die!(the New 52) Volume 5 Superman defeated Ultraman in a fight. On his way to visit Ellen and Maxine, Buddy stopped off in a sleep little village. Buddy is still one of my new favorite heroes of all time, and I think he could be for you too. The beast apparently died shortly after their battle but Buddy, thinking quickly managed to save the Beast's life by merging some of his white blood cells into super-powerful defensive cells..

  • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

Enmeshment and Extinction in DC’s Animal Man Jason Wallin (Alberta) »We were given paradise...and we turned it into an...abattoir« – B’wana Beast (AM4.17.1)1 In the fall of 1987, British writer Grant Morrison was approached by a team of talent recruiters from DC Publishing with an unusual mission. In the wake of Alan Moore’s successful work on Swamp Thing (2012) (with Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, and Rick Veitch) and Watchmen (1986) (with Dave Gibbons), DC began looking for new writers to resuscitate an untapped back catalogue of silver-age characters. In the front matter of the Animal Man (1991) trade paperback, Grant Morrison describes his fascination with Carmine Infantino’s Animal Man, a character whose origins extend from issue #180 of Strange Adventures (1965), in which mild-mannered everyman Bernard ›Buddy‹ Baker gains the ability to harness the powers of animals after being exposed to radiation from a crashed alien spacecraft.

Thesis Examination Committee: ______________________________________ Advisor Abigail McGowan, Ph.D ______________________________________ Melanie Gustafson, Ph.D ______________________________________ Chairperson Elizabeth Fenton, Ph.D ______________________________________ Dean, Graduate College Domenico Grasso, Ph.D March 22, 2013 Abstract At just under thirty years the serious academic study of American comic books is relatively young. Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC.
