Summary Description: The Virginia Washington Monument in Virginia's Capitol Square originated with the Virginia General Assembly's establishment of a fund for a monument to Washington in 1817. At its unveiling on February 22, 1858, the statue became only the second equestrian statue of Washington ever dedicated. 1 It was instrumental in generating a national wave of representational memorial sculptures.
