We currently have four sister cities around the world – Netanya, Israel; Taormina, Italy; Hengchun, Taiwan and Punta del Este, Uruguay. Our sister cities were first identified as potential “twinning” candidates by Sunny Isles Beach residents who either had personal connections to them (Netanya and Hengchun) or had come across an extraordinary city during their travels (Taormina and Punta del Este). Building on the success of our relationships with our sister cities, we have established a Sister City Internship Program. This program provides for a young resident from one of our sister cities to come to Sunny Isles Beach to live George ‘Bud’ Scholl and work within our city government for six to 18 months. These internships Mayor teach our interns valuable skills and cultural awareness that they can then take back to our Sister Cities to share within their own communities. Last fall, our first intern, Erika Raneiri, completed her internship and returned to Taormina, Sicily. Erika was trained in Catania, Sicily as an engineer and architect. During her internship, she rotated through various assignments in our building department, planning and zoning department Dana Goldman Isaac Aelion and worked on some special projects for our City Manager. Upon completion Vice Mayor Commissioner of her internship, she was eager to return home and share her newfound knowledge within the municipal government of Taormina. Our next intern, Karol Malamed, arrived in April from Punta del Este, Uruguay. Karol’s skills best align with our community engagement, cultural affairs programs, and marketing and tourism. She is learning from within the various areas of our city that manage our cultural programs and other Jeanette Gatto Larisa Svechin services we regularly provide our residents and guests. Commissioner Commissioner The vision of Sister Cities International, the governing body for U.S. sister city programs, is “to remain the largest and premier global network connecting people and communities from all backgrounds within the United States with people and communities around the world, to foster peace and prosperity.” We believe keeping strong ties to our Sister Cities through our internship program is maintaining and strengthening that vision. OPERMIAMI | FORT LAUDERDALE A 2017-18 Season WElcOmE To the 2017-18 Season of Florida Grand Opera! Dear Friends: What is it that opera lovers—both veterans and newcomers—crave most? A thrilling experience unlike any other. And that’s what Florida Grand Opera promises you in the 2017-18 Season. We are going on a dramatic journey with four of the most exciting women in opera. And we want you to join us. The season opens with one of the great bel canto classics, Lucia di Lammermoor—a haunting Gothic story about a young Scottish woman, bullied by her abusive family, who sacrifices her true love and descends into madness. We then move to ancient Jerusalem for Richard Strauss’s Salome, the tale of the Judean princess who goes to horrifying lengths to get her way—an opera that still has the power to jolt today’s audiences. Next, we head to the depths with Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, with the legendary musician and poet braving the perils of the Underworld to rescue his beloved Euridice. Finally, we will travel through the Amazon with the heroine of We will bring you dazzling productions cast with world-class artists. SAVE UP TO 20%* TICKETS: WWW.FGO.ORG | 1.800.741.1010 WELCOME To theWelcome, 2017–18 Season SusanDear friends: letter of Florida Grand Opera! Five years ago, when I came to Florida Grand Opera, I was charged with reinvigorating the company’s repertoire and connecting with the audience in new and meaningful ways. I believe that our 2017–18 Season will possess the greatest depth and breadth of any season we’ve produced yet. There’s something to appeal to a wide range of tastes: the thrill of Italian bel canto with Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor... the steamy eroticism of Richard Strauss’s Salome... the Classical grace and intimate drama of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice... the gorgeous lyricism of Daniel Catán’s Florencia en el Amazonas. Whichever operas you choose, you can’t go wrong: all of them will be brought to life by some of the finest artists on the current international scene. But there’s more to FGO than what’s happening on the main stage. South Florida audiences will also get the full range of the FGO experiences with our SongFest Recital series, featuring gifted members of our Young Artist Program; Community Conversations series, which explore an opera in depth; and Opera Concert series and Family Days that will open up the world of opera to all audiences. But the season can’t happen without you. Come join us—won’t you? Sincerely, Scene from: Orfeo ed Euridice, Act II Photo: © Elise Bakketun for Seattle Opera Susan T.

  • Miami, Florida Miami Is a City of Contradictions
Miami, Florida Miami is a city of contradictions. And so it makes sense that the two most characteristic aspects of Miami’s culture, its newness and its incredible diversity, are both its strongest and its weakest points. On the positive side, youth means energy, and Miami has plenty of it. For a city that was a pioneer swamp settlement just over a century ago and a seasonal tourist town only 40 years ago, the amount of arts activity in Miami is extraordinary. There are major classi- cal institutions in the metropolitan Miami-Dade County, encompassing municipalities from Hialeah to Miami Beach: the Florida Philharmonic, the Florida Grand Opera, the New World Symphony, Miami City Ballet, two contemporary arts museums, the New World School of the Arts and arts departments at other colleges and universities. Add to that a range of galleries, theater and dance companies, individ- ual artists in every medium, as well as a plethora of festivals like Calle Ocho, Trinidadian Carnival, the Miami Bookfair, the Hispanic Theater Festival, the Miami Film Festival, and the Florida Dance Festival. A major new per- forming arts center with a symphony and ballet hall, opera house and smaller theater is also slat- ed to open in 2002. But volume doesn’t always mean depth or quality. All this activity has some shaky under- pinnings. “Smoke and mirrors,” is how executive director Michael Spring of the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Council describes the flourishing appearance of Miami’s cultural scene, where compared to other cities, a higher percentage of Miami’s arts money comes from government rather than from private and corporate sources.
