Florida Grand Operaʼs mission is to produce opera for residents and visitors alike in South Florida, celebrating the art form through performances and concerts, enriching the field through education and training opportunities, and partnering with the diverse communities of the marketplace. Its core values are integrity, creativity, community, and account abilit y. To ensure long t erm financial st abilit y, FGO needs t o t ransform it s business model through the growth and diversification of contribution revenue, an increase in earned income, endowment growth, cost management, and long-term fiscal and artistic planning. The new General Direct or will be charged wit h leading t he t ransformat ion of the company. The Florida Grand Opera seeks a visionary leader with deep experience in t he opera field who can partner with the board of directors, the management team, and the community to inspire and motivate, raising funds, re-envisioning t he art ist ic plans, and serving as spokesperson for the institution. Florida Grand Opera is the twelfth largest opera company in the United States and the sevent h oldest . It was formed in 1994 by the merger of Greater Miami Opera and the Opera Guild of Fort Lauderdale. The Companyʼs budget has grown from $1,200 for its first Miami season in 1941 to nearly $11 million today. The Great er Miami Opera was founded in 1941 by Dr. Art uro di Filippi, a voice t eacher at the University of Miami. The first production was a single performance of Leoncavalloʼs Pag liac c i, performed in English, with Dr. de Filippi in the lead role. Dr. di Filippi performed in the first opera staged by the Opera Guild of Fort Lauderdale in 1945, and productions continued in both Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The companyʼs Young Artist Studio was founded in 1984. Retiring General Director Robert M. Heuer is only the third person to lead the company in it s 70-year history. In 1986 Mr. Heuer was named General Director and Chief Exec ut iv e Of f ic er, having joined the company in 1979 as Production Director. He succeeded founder Arturo di Filippi (1941-1973), and Robert Herman (1973-1986), formerly of the Metropolitan Opera. In June of 2011 Ramon Tebar was appointed Music Director of Florida Grand Opera, becoming the first Spanish conductor named to lead a major American opera company. A native of Valencia, Maestro Tebar has an active international conducting schedule and also serves as Music Director of the Palm Beach Symphony. Cur r ent ly , FGO present s a main st age season of four opera product ions at t he Zif f Opera House at t he Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale. Through co-operative efforts with local organizations, FGO promotes a greater awareness of Opera, its accessibility, and its commitment to presenting and creating works that celebrate and reflect the diverse cultural traditions present in Florida.
