Argentina Celebrates Pascual Perez' Birthday World Boxing Association Official Site http://wbanews.com/new Argentina celebrates Pascual Perez’ birthday Boxing celebrates the birth of a great man in boxing, the Argentinean, Pascual Pérez who was born 87 years ago in Mendoza, Argentina. He was a great sportsman to his country and to the world sharing the glory with Carlos Monzón y Miguel Canto. Pérez died in Buenos Aires, on January 22, 1977, but is kept as a reference of Latin American boxing. Pascual Perez, who was an important figure of the flyweight division, was also an Olympic medalist in London 1948, and left an amateur record in 125 fights. He completed his professional boxing career winning a title in 1954 and kept it until 1960, with 9 successful defenses. He debuted in 1952, and hung the gloves in 1964 with a record of 84 wins, 7 losses, one draw and 57 knock outs. This title fight was with Japanese Yoshio Shirai, in Tokyo, on November 26, 1954 for 15 rounds. Perez and Shirai had already met in July 1954 in Argentina, in a 10-round-fight that ended in draw. Later, in November, the Argentinean won by unanimous decision at the Korakuen Baseball Stadium. In May next year, Perez went back to Tokyo to meet Shirai, to defeat him by KO in round 5 to end their rivalry. He travelled to Venezuela in 1956 to fight Ramón Arias, who was the first Venezuelan to fight for a world title. Perez won by UD in 15 rounds. In April 1960, he travelled to Thailand, to face Pone Kingpetch who defeated Perez by split decision. The fought again in September, in a rematch held in Los Angeles, and the Thai, defeated him again; only this time was by TKO in 8 rounds. 1 / 3 World Boxing Association Official Site http://wbanews.com/new Pérez was inducted in the Boxing Hall of Fame. The WBA family and boxing fans fondly remember the Argentinean Pascual Pérez, who who put Argentina and South America in a place of honor. 3 / 3 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).

Now Frazier and Yank Durham, his trainer-manager are trying desperately to get a return fight with George Foreman, who stopped Joe in two rounds at Kingston, Jamaica, on January 22. A Foreman-Frazier fight is one of the very few major attractions open for competition among the leading pro moters, all of whom are based in the United States. Efforts are being made in England to pull Joe Bugmer and Danny McAlinden into the Big Fight ranks but the impression exists in well informed circles that neither qualifies. Putting together the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle, which were scattered to the winds by the Foreman victory over Frazier and the Ken Norton defeat of Ali, is a task which has eligible promoters stymied. Heavyweight champion George Foreman gets warm welcome from students at E. 0. Smith Despite the fact that Ali was a Junior High in Houston, the school he attended as a youth. $3,200,000 victim of the Frazier debacle, he stood out as the wise man of the limited coterie of top-flight heavies until he took Norton too lightly.
