David Montrose __________________________________________________________ Dear Mr Jamieson Genealogy: Horn family I have researched the Baptismal Register of the Dutch Reformed Congregation of Bethlehem since its founding in 1869 until April 1872. Only one relevant baptismal entry was found: Michiel Christiaan was born on 13 June 1869 at Spitskop and baptised on 17 July 1869 at Bethlehem. His parents are indicated as Michiel Christiaan Horn and Louisa Jacoba Rensburg. Witnesses: Louis Jacobus Rensburg and Anna Sofia Fourie. Michiel Christiaan Horn and Louisa Jacoba van Rensburg were married in Bloemfontein on 1 June 1863. He was 20 years of age and came from Nokkersdam(?) / Mockesdam (?), Bloemfontein. She was 20 years of age and also came from Nokkersdam(?) Mockesdam (?), Bloemfontein. J.W. Hajenius (?) and C.H. Niehaus signed as witnesses. Please note that the names are given as they appear in the Register. A question mark indicates that the entry is difficult to read and the correct spelling / name is uncertain. No children of M.C. Horn and L.J. Rensburg were baptised in Bloemfontein from 1864 to 1874. Unfortunately the staff of the Archives and Information Office cannot conduct extensive searches as required by you. The lives of 153 politically-exposed Second World War veterans are examined. Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of ‘Capital’ and ‘Habitus’ are used to examine the ways in which the war shaped the political views of the servicemen as well as the ways in which the ex-servicemen could leverage their war service to further their post-war political careers. An examination of the fault lines of class and culture, in pre-war, White South Africa, provided crucial insight into the initial habitus and motivation of the volunteer soldier.

If one reads these visions of the Seer Nicolaas van Rensburg, one finds the Hand of Almighty God always present, surely guiding His people towards their destiny, according to His Will, through all the errors made by this stiff-necked people out of own choice. • November 30, 1995 STATEMENT by ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU
November 30, 1995 STATEMENT BY ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU ON HIS APPOINTMENT TO THE TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION COMMISSION It is a very great privilege and honour to have been appointed as the head of the Commission, and I am deeply humbled. The membership of the Commission appears to represent a fair spectrum of South African society, and comprises people who have special gifts to bring to the sensitive task of contributing to the healing process in our country. I appeal to South Africans and people around the world to uphold members of the Commission in their prayers, because the healing and reconciliation of a deeply traumatised and wounded people is a deeply spiritual exercise. I hope that the work of the Commission, by opening wounds to cleanse them, will thereby stop them from festering. We cannot be facile and say bygones will be bygones, because they will not be bygones and will return to haunt us. True reconciliation is never cheap, for it is based on forgiveness which is costly. Forgiveness in turn depends on repentance, which has to be based on an acknowledgement of what was done wrong, and therefore on disclosure of the truth. You cannot forgive what you do not know. The purpose of the Commission in terms of the act which establishes it is to assist in the process of healing and reconciliation. The Commission needs to be geared towards the victims of human rights abuses rather than the perpetrators. I would like us to concentrate on the rehabilitation of victims and restoration of their dignity, emphasising restitution rather than retribution and reprisal.

Sprowadzenie tej formacji do prostej ekspozytury niemieckiej partii nazistowskiej byłoby wszakże nadmiernym uproszczeniem, zaciemniającym skomplikowany charakter skrajnie prawicowej części holen- derskiej sceny politycznej przed wojną i w trakcie wojny.

  • Mlytle Thesis Final Body
! ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: A FUNDAMENTAL TRANSFORMATION: THE MANAGEMENT OF SOUTH AFRICA’S HERITAGE FOR NATION BUILDING IN THE POST-APARTHEID ERA Degree Candidate: Melanie D. Lytle Degree and Year: Master of Arts in Historic Preservation, 2011 Thesis directed by: John Stubbs Welch Center for Graduate and Professional Studies Drawing on compelling examples of South Africa’s heritage sector transformation after the end of apartheid, this thesis considers the use of heritage resources in nation building and its potential for supporting the transition to democracy in places with difficult and painful pasts. Three South African heritage sites are analyzed: Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, a notorious twentieth century former prison incorporated into the new Constitutional Court complex; Prestwich Place in Cape Town, a pre-1830s informal burial ground, the management of which has spurred contentious debates; and the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, an ostentatious symbol of the former regime built in 1949 that is struggling to maintain its relevance. The analysis of these three sites is ! prefaced by an overview of the place of heritage in nation building and in places of atrocity and pain, and by a summary of South Africa’s century-long history of heritage management. The thesis concludes with recommendations for other sites in South Africa that have yet to transform and for other nations transitioning to democracy and/or dealing with difficult heritage. South Africa’s commitment to democratic heritage transformation has permitted a rewriting of the nation’s history, has exposed the challenges and rewards from the involvement of everyone in the identification and management of heritage, and has resulted in an atypical decision to leave some of the more difficult pasts in place to permit debate to persist, all lessons that are important for managing difficult heritage in nation building in South Africa and elsewhere in the world.
