The Geological Curator 8 (9): 393 - 425. The move south from Wick to the city of Edinburgh in 1865, some four years after retirement from the Customs service, provided Charles W. Peach with new oppor- tunities for fossil-collecting and scientific networking. Here he renewed and maintained his interest in natural history and made significant palaeobotanical collections from the Carboniferous of the Midland Valley of Scotland. These are distinguished by some interesting characteristics of their documentation which the following generations of fossil collectors and researchers would have done well to emulate. Many of his fossil plant specimens have not only the locality detail, but also the date, month and year of collection neatly handwritten on attached paper labels; as a result, we can follow Peach's collecting activities over a period of some 18 years or so. Comments and even illustrative sketches on the labels of some fossils give us first-hand insight into Peach's observations. Study of these collections now held in National Museums Scotland reveals a pattern of collect- ing heavily biased towards those localities readily accessible from the newly expanding railways which provided a relatively inexpensive and convenient means of exploring the geology of the neighbourhood of Edinburgh.

  • Fauldhouse and the Breich Valley Health Inequalities Report
FAULDHOUSE AND THE BREICH VALLEY HEALTH INEQUALITIES REPORT 1.0 Introduction A motion, tabled by Councillor Neil Findlay requesting information on how health inequalities in the ward are being addressed, was endorsed by the LAC at its meeting on 10 November 2009. The terms of the motion are set out below: ‘Motion: Health Inequalities in West Lothian. The recently published West Lothian Council community planning progress report (page 12) shows that there are 19 data zones in the worst 15% in Scotland within the health domain. Of these 19 the Fauldhouse and Longridge area has the lowest male life expectancy of 71.61 for males and second lowest for females at 76.41. This compares with Livingston Murieston at 81.83 for males and Bathgate west 84.97 for females. Areas of Stoneyburn, Addiewell, Polbeth and West Calder will be similar in their health profile but will not be highlighted due to the way in which these statistics are calculated. Committee expresses its deep concern about these inequalities and instructs Council officers to liaise with its community planning partners to:- Identify projects that will begin to address the health inequalities that exist in the Breich Valley Bring back a detailed and costed report on the above within 6 months of this meeting Identify areas of council spend that have been or are being targeted at reducing health inequalities i.e. where money is being taken from one geographical area and targeted at another with greater need.’ This paper is a response to the motion and reflects the range of activities, across the Community Planning Partnership (CPP) that are currently underway in the ward to address health inequalities.

  • The Submission to the Royal College of Paediatricians Review
1 NHS Lothian Pan Lothian Review Paediatric Services “St John’s 24/7 paediatric services are absolutely essential to the health and well- being of the West Lothian Community” West Lothian SNP The Submission to the Royal College of Paediatricians Review West Lothian Scottish National Party 1 2 Contents Introduction Page 3 Executive Summary Pages 4-6 Case Studies Pages 7-8 The West Lothian Community Pages 9-12 St John’s Children’s Services Pages 13-16 Appendix One Statistics - Population details , travel distances and times, areas of deprivation 2 3 Introduction As elected representatives serving the communities of West Lothian we contend that the provision of 24/7 paediatric services at St John’s Hospital in Livingston is absolutely essential to the health and well- being of the West Lothian Community. West Lothian, Scotland’s 9th largest council area, is amongst the fastest growing communities in Scotland, and with 20% of our population under 15, we have one of the youngest populations in the country. West Lothian also faces considerable challenges to more effectively tackle the health inequalities that blight our lives. Currently 2188 children live in areas identified as being within the most disadvantaged 15% in Scotland as measured by the Scottish Indices of Multiple Deprivation. Children’s services at St John’s are easily accessible and deliver an excellent quality of care, underpinned by strong ties with our local GP’s and community health services. We contend that the further integration of children’s services into the emerging West Lothian Health and Care Partnership and the resultant strengthening of our local community links is the best way to ensure the sustainable future provision of best quality, local, 24/7 children’s services for the benefit of our communities.
