AnnaHiking Active holidays in Greece www.annahiking.nl Self-guided bicycle tour Turkey and Rhodes: 15-day trekking through southwest Turkey and on the Greek island Rhodes 2020 (DRFT2109I) Our philosophy: active during the day, and in the afternoon a warm shower, a good meal and a comfortable bed in a small-scale accommodation. We invite you to join us! more information: www.annahiking.nl (29-3-2020) DRFT210I: self-guided bicycle tour Turkey and Rhodes (15 days) About AnnaHiking and Eye4Cycling In 1991 Anna and Fred from AnnaHiking visited Greece for the first time. Our love for the country, the culture, the climate, the food, the language and the Greek has grown ever since. We feel at home here and want to communicate this feeling to others. Many people are familiar with the Greek “islands with beautiful beaches”. Many islands also boast a splendid inland with quiet roads, ideal for biking. Following investigations done on Kriti Papilionidae, the first author visited all the known sites adding some new biotopes; the first intent was searching for the food plants, the preimaginal instars, the places of flight with the feeding plants of adults. The first author, with the cooper ation of three collegues, travelled the island for more than 880 km, visiting almost all localities cited by Olivier and trying to look for new biotopes in the southern part of Rhodes; the climatic situation was in syntony with the annual trend although a disturbance in the first days of April has delayed the emergence of populations of All. cerisy at higher altitudes in the center of the island, while those at sea level have already vanished; in the intermediate area the flight period was at its peak; generally the butterflies were scarce, only All. cerisy and Manióla telmessia were found in some numbers. We didn’t find any Archon apollinus despite the search along the whole of Rhodes; we presume that the flight period had already ended for quite a time because, at least, some worn specimens should have been found; if apollinus is present on Rhodes island, it is surely very local and rare.

Introduction In the last few years the need of rational management of the aqueus potential and of new water resources exploration in Rhodes island has become necessary because of: - the continuous growth of island's permanent population, - the huge development of tourism, and - the continuous increase in water needs per habitant. The problem of water supply has become particularly acute during the last two years which has been characterised as dry. According to 1987 estimates the total annual consumption in water has risen to 30 Mm3. It should be noted that a great part of the total water quantity (approx. 67% to 70%) is consumed mainly for water-supply and irrigation purposes at the northern part of the island, where development and economic activities are most intensive (triangle between Rhodes city - Fanes - Kolimpia). The use of the total annual water consumption is 17 Mm3 for water-supply and 13 Mm3/year for irrigation. Part of the consumption is also used to cover the needs of nearby islands which belong to its district i.e.

WATER SUPPLY MANAGEMENT APPROACHES USING RES IN RHODES ISLAND, GREECE E. Manoli, D. Assimacopoulos1 and C. A. Karavitis2 National Technical University of Athens, Chemical Engineering Department, Process Analysis and Plant Design Section, 9 Heroon Polytechniou, Zografou Campus, GR-15780, Athens, Greece ABSTRACT: Desalination powered by Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is presented in order to augment the water supply in the semi-arid region of Rhodes island.. The island of Rhodes was chosen as a case study as it relies mostly on the exploitation of groundwater resources and faces serious water shortage problems due to the aquifers depletion. Alternatives are discussed and compared in contrast to the construction of storage dams so as to meet the urban demand up to the year 2040. Results may indicate that by using also financial incentives and management approaches, desalination powered by RES could be an attractive and environmentally friendly option in an effort to solve problems related to water quantity and quality in semi-arid regions with adequate Renewable Energy potential. 1. They provide an excellent opportunity to investigate the relative roles played by climate and tectonics in sedimentary processes. The tectono-sedimentary organization of these deposits is revised in the light of an integrated study combining data from field investigations, sedimentology, bio- and magnetostratigraphy, radiometric dating, palaeoecology, and palynology. Three lithostratigraphic units are recognised: the Rhodes Formation, the newly defined Ladiko–Tsampika Formation, and the Lindos Acropolis Formation. A major erosional surface separates the Rhodes Formation from the Ladiko–Tsampika Formation, which was deposited in deep and narrow palaeovalleys.

KARAMAN, 1950 (FAM. NIPHARGIDAE) IN RHODOS ISLAND, GREECE (CONTRIBUTION TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE AMPHIPODA 296) SUMMARY The partially known species Niphargus rhodi S. Karaman, 1950b (Amphipoda, fam. Niphargidae) was described based on one female from the subterranean waters of Rhodos Island ["(spring on the Propheta Mt. (?Elias?)" (? = Profitis Ilias)], and later only mentioned by Pesce & Maggi (1983) for several localities of this island accompanied sometimes with amphipods Bogidiella longiflagellum S. Kar. 1959 or Medigidiella chappuisi (Ruffo, 1952). This species, discovered and collected in numerous localities on Rhodos Island by various scientists, is now redescribed and figured, and its variability and relation to other members of genus Niphargus of Greece and some adjacent regions is discussed. Keywords: taxonomy, redescription, Niphargus rhodi, Rhodos Island, Greece, subterranean. INTRODUCTION The freshwater fauna of Amphipoda in Greece has been studied for long time by various scientist and expedition (C. Bou, S. Karaman, S. Ruffo, A. Vigna-Taglianti, J. Stoch, G. Karaman, etc.) and numerous taxa were discovered and described belonging to various Amphipoda families [Ingolfiellidae, Bogidiellidae, Crangonictidae, Salentinellidae, Gammaridae, Hadziidae, Niphargidae, etc.]. Among them the most numerous taxa belong to the family Niphargidae (genera Niphargus Schiödte, 1849, Exniphargus G. Karaman, 2016b, Niphargobatoides G. Karaman, 2016b), i. e. to the genus Niphargus (nearly 15 taxa), almost all highly endemic. Despite the fact that the subterranean fauna of the family Niphargidae in Greece was studied since 1934, when S.
