• 2006: over 450,000 TEUs • Five terminals within Kotka • Mussalo – containers, chemicals from Russia to the west, and products for paper and plastic industries • Other terminals handle ro/ro and lo/lo vessels • Car terminal launched in 2003 Saimaa Canal Location

• 8 locks: first 5 in Russia, 3 in Finland • Operated and maintained by the Finnish Maritime Administration • Russian land is leased by Finland, lease up in 2013 • Canal is 43 km • Distance from Vihervoi Island to Siilinjarvi – 413 km Saimaa Canal History Saimaa Canal Lock System

• Lock dimensions: 82.5 m in length, 12.6 m beam, 4.35 m draft • 2 million tons/annually, raw materials from forest and mining industry • Passenger and yachting traffic • Closed for 2 1/2 months, scheduled repairs • Locks are remote controlled, with floating bollards Finnish Maritime Administration and Helsinki VTS • Roughly 110,000 transits in Baltic Sea, and 40,000 into Finnish ports • Mandatory reporting (VHF and AIS) • Five sectors handled by VTS: 3 on west coast, Gulf of Finland, and Saimaa Canal • Controllers Icebreakers and IBNET

• 8 icebreakers • IBNET – Icebreaking Net • Jointly between Finland and Sweden • Satellite imagery to icebreakers which coordinate with ports, merchant vessels, VTS • Ice charts – coverage, thickness, and wind direction Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) since 1974 • Protect the Baltic Sea from all sources of pollution • HELCOM recommendations & then contracting parties action • Five main working groups • Maritime Group works with IMO • Successes: lowering emissions and illegal discharges, beach recovery, wildlife recovery, vessel transit guide Unifeeder

• Largest feeder vessel line from European continent to Baltic Sea • Antwerp, Rotterdam Baltic Sea ports • Port of Kotka scheduled service: 5 vessels, each 1000 TEUs • 167 m length, 28 m beam, 9.3 m draft, and 19.5 knots • 40 vessels, total of 28,000 TEUs • 2 million TEUs/year Ferry Service
