STAALWART Jordan Staal played his 1,000th NHL game tonight, becoming just the fifth NHL player to play his 1,000th career game with the Whalers/Hurricanes and the first since on 10/21/09. Drafted in the first round (second overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft, Staal became the second player from his draft class to reach the 1,000-game milestone, joining (ARI/PIT/TOR/BOS: 1,108 GP). He tallied an assist tonight, becoming just the second player in franchise history to record an assist/point in his 1,000th career NHL game (Whitney). Staal has now posted four points in his last four games (4/6-4/12: 3g, 1a).

FINDING NINO Nino Niederreiter scored a goal tonight to extend his point streak to three games (4/8-4/12: 1g, 2a). He has now scored 15 goals in 2020-21, which ranks third on the team behind (17) and (16). Niederreiter has now registered 26 points (14g, 11a) this season, with 22 points (12g, 10a) coming at even strength. His 22 even-strength points are tied with Martin Necas (7-15—22) for second on the team behind only Aho (11- 13—24).

SETTING THE PACE Despite tonight’s loss, the Hurricanes are now 27-10-4 (58 points) in 2020-21, tying the franchise record for standings points through the team’s first 41 games of any season, achieved in 2005-06. Carolina has posted a .707 points percentage this season, which is tied with TBL (28-11-2) for the second-highest in the NHL behind only COL (28-9-4: .732).
