Cody Painter, Assistant Coach In 2018, Cody Painter is entering his fourth season as an assistant coach at OBU serving as the pitching and catching coach, fi rst base coach and recruiting coordinator. In Painter’s fi rst two seasons as the pitching coach, Bison pitchers have compiled a combined record of 96-23, including a school record 30-0 start to the 2015 season. Three OBU pitchers have been taken in the Major League Baseball First- Year Player Draft in that time - Taylor Hearn, 2015, 5th Round; Kelvin Rivas, 2015, 10th Round; Nathan Thompson, 2016, 27th round. In addition to Hearn, Rivas and Thompson, infi elder Keach Ballard, was selected in the 2015 draft. During the NCCAA National Championship season of 2016, Bison pitchers allowed OBU’s fewest runs since 1983 and fewest hits and earned runs since 1993. In the University’s fi rst year in the NCAA Div. II Great American Conference, Bison arms led the conference in seven categories. Jinny Para was the GAC Pitcher of the Year and ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division II First-Team All-Central Region. Thompson set the GAC single-season strikeout record with 126 Ks. In fact, in the fi ve seasons of the conference’s existence, only fi ve pitchers in the GAC have topped 100 strikeouts in a season and three are Bison – Thompson, fi rst, 126; Parra, third, 103; Carson McPherson, tied for fourth, 101. In 2015, as the Bison qualifi ed for the NAIA World Series, OBU pitchers were second in the nation in NAIA in strikeouts with 542, ninth in opponent’s batting average at .227 and Rivas, a fi rst team NAIA All American, set the OBU school record for strikeouts with 144 Ks. The Bison placed fi ve players on the NAIA All American fi rst, second, and honorable mention teams. Eight players were fi rst team all Sooner Athletic Conference, three of them pitchers. Of the mere eight losses by the Bison in 2015, only one was by more than four runs. Painter attended high school at Oklahoma Christian Academy in Edmond, Okla., and was a Ferguson Jenkins Outstanding Student Athlete Award recipient in 2007 and an All-State selection in 2008. He received an Associate of Science degree from Clarendon Col- lege in 2010, a Bachelor of University Studies from Oklahoma State University in 2012, and a Masters of Secondary Education at the University of Central Oklahoma in 2014.
