Amy Chanthaphavong is Miss Asian America The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry will focus on traditional top grade 2009 rice varieties such as black rice, kaynoi, takhiet, CR 203 and thaddokkham. To reach this target, the ministry should increase rice yields in irrigated areas in both dry and wet seasons, Agriculture Department Deputy Director General, Mr. Kham Sanatem, told Vientiane Times recently. The ministry will also encourage the allocation of more rice fields in suitable areas, especially in upland locations, said Mr. Kham. In 2008, the ministry instructed the agriculture and forestry sector in each province to promote the system of rice intensification (SRI), which involves planting single rice seedlings in irrigated areas. The method has benefited many farming families in the northern provinces especially Luang Prabang and Xayaboury, according to a report from the Livelihood Improvement Project for the Rural Poor in Laos with Increase of Rice Production.

ANNEX M SEMINAR ON SUSTAINABLE TOURISM AND TOURISM ETHICS: Tourism as an Instrument for Inclusive Growth and Economic Equity 10 June 2013, Sanur - Bali, Indonesia CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION Seminar on Sustainable Tourism and Tourism Ethics: Tourism as an Instrument for Inclusive Growth and Economic Equity aims to exchange ideas and best practices among FEALAC Member Countries as well as to establish networking among participants. Seminar was attended by participants from FEALAC Member Countries (Brazil, Cambodia, China, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Peru, Philippines, Thailand,) and international organizations (UNWTO, PATA, ACCOR, ECPAT, EATOF, INDECON), as well as Indonesia stakeholders. Seminar has discussed 3 main topics, namely: 1. Public and Private Policy on Sustainable Tourism 2. Tourism Contributes to Poverty Alleviation 3. Strategic Role of Tourism in Women Empowerment, SMEs and Job Creation For undertaking sustainable tourism development within the FEALAC Member Countries, Participants of the Seminar reached the following recommendation: 1. Recognise the importance of enacting the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism (GCET) in national law and in undertaking sustainable tourism development. The ten principles of the UNWTO Global Code of Ethics cover the economic, social, cultural and environmental components of travel and tourism, aim at maximising the sector’s benefits while minimizing its negative impact on environment, cultural heritage and societies. 2. Acknowledge that tourism is indeed a promising sector for national development, as it has important role in promoting economic growth, poverty alleviation, and create job opportunities. The political will from the government assisted by the industries and communities is significant to develop sustainable tourism as guided by the GCET.

Japanese Journal of Human Geography 64―4（2012） Development of Japanese―style Ecotourism Based on School Excursion : A Case Study in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture Tran i Mai Hoa, Graduate Student, Graduate School of Letters, Kansai University NOMA Haruo Kansai University I Introduction Iida is a small city in the south of Nagano Prefecture, but a pioneering area that has succeeded in developing experience ―based school excursions. The city’s ecotourism model was honorably selected as one of the typical thirteen multi―ministerial ecotourism promotion projects in 2004, and rewarded first place in Ecotourism Awards in the following year. Undoubtedly, there have been many papers referring experience―based school excursion and farm ―stay tourism by various points of view. School lectures show interests in analyzing the impact of these tours on students from an educational standpoint（ Yasuda 2006）. Agricultural experts focus on the socio ―economic effects of these trips on rural communities, and farmers participating in home ―stay tourism activity（ Hanamura & Torikai 2006 ; Miyazaki 2006）. Economic and tourism experts examine both demand and supply sides, i. e. the host and the guest, considering economic and managerial aspects（ Kuraoka et al. 2009 ; Takamine 2007）. With support from the industry, The 1st State of Hong Kong Tourism Conference was held with a success. Our department was invited to visit Hong Kong's largest airline's facility - Cathay Pacific City where we had the chance to learn first hand about training at the company and also to try out the flight simulator which Cathay uses for pilot training. A number of our staff represented the department at international conferences and meetings. We are proud that our department head, Prof. Kaye Chon, was recently appointed to the Tourism Strategy Group. Also, HTM students were given the opportunity to learn about Italian wines, and there is more news on staff in this issue. 1ST STATE OF HONG KONG TOURISM CONFERENCE The 1st State of Hong Kong Tourism Conference "Hong Kong As a World Class Destination" organised by the Department and held on the 23rd October 2000 at the Kowloon Shangri-La Hotel was a success. Over 200 industry practitioners, hospitality educators and researchers met and discussed issues of common interest and concern. The conference featured two plenary sessions where keynote speakers, Mr Ian Perkin, Head of Economic and Legal Affairs Division of The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Mr Qu Ping-shu, representative of Prof. Zhang Guangrui of the Tourism Research Centre of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Mr Philip Yan-kin Chan, Executive Director of Star East Holdings Limited, presented their views on Hong Kong's competitiveness and Internet marketing.

Some families who plant in fertile soil with good irrigation had produced about 9 tonnes per hectare, provincial agriculture section officer Ms Soudalath Keoboualapha told Vientiane Times yesterday. The method has benefited many farming families in Laos’ northern provinces and is to be expanded to farmers around the country. However, Luang Prabang’s rice production still fails to meet local consumption needs due to a shortage of land and the fact that some rice is supplied to tourists visiting the province, she said. Last year, the province produced more than 100,000 tonnes of rice, sufficient for only 6-7 months, so additional rice had to be bought from neighbouring provinces, Ms Soudalath said. It is anticipated that the rice intensification method will help provincial farmers produce enough rice for consumption and sale at markets.
