Information is ever-present and pervasive in our technology and beyond in our thinking about the world, appearing to be a generic ‘thing’ arising from all of our contacts with each other and our environment, whether thought of in terms of communication or cognition. For librarians information is a universal concept, at its greatest extent total in content and comprehensive in scope, even though we may not agree that all information is library information. · Diaphanous. Due to its virtuality, the manner in which information has the capacity to make an effect, information is freedom. In many aspects it exhibits a transparent quality, a window-like clarity as between source and patron in an ideal interface or a perfect exchange without bias. -

Williams School of Graduate Studies Copyright by Jesse Andrews 2017 All Rights Reserved Abstract A PRACTIUM ON UNCERTAINTY: CREATION OF AN HGIS DATABASE Jesse Andrews B.A., University of North Carolina Greensboro Chairperson: Kathleen Schroeder Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) historical sources and geospatial technology offers a fruitful new approach to mapping, analyzing, and modeling the past. This project employs sources freely available online to create a historical geodatabase of the A Line of the Mexican National Railroad circa 1910. The project utilizes satellite imagery, census data, historical maps, train schedules along with postcards and photography from the period, to reconstruct the rail line and its stations shortly before the Mexican Revolution. These sources are combined in a GIS to create a highly accurate map and associated historical database of the system as it existed in the first decade of the 20th Century. The database suggests the potential of future scholarship combining GIS software, satellite imagery, and online source materials. -

ABSTRACT The ability to analyze alternative points of view and to empathize (understand the beliefs, attitudes and actions of another from the other’s perspective rather than from one’s own) are essential building blocks for learning in the 21 st century. Empathy for the human participants of historical times has been deemed by a number of educators as important for the development of historical understanding. Accepted: The term information has become and essential con- October 3, 2013. cept in the field of library science and associated dis- ciplines. The proper meaning of this term necessar- ily depends on epistemological context. Moreover, its intra-theoretical and polysemic potential has led the term to be used in multiples senses, ranging from the contexts of cognitive psychology to library science; however, the analysis offered herein underscores the need to define the term more precisely for use in li- brary science and associated fields, so that its meaning is neither degraded nor over-simplified when building useful explicative models. Past Looking: Using Arts As Historical Evidence in Teaching History
Social Studies Research and Practice www.socstrp.org Past Looking: Using Arts as Historical Evidence in Teaching History Yonghee Suh Old Dominion University This is a comparative case study of how three high school history teachers in the U.S.A. use art in their practice. The following research question was investigated: How do secondary history teachers incorporate the arts—paintings, music, poems, novels, and films—in their teaching of history and why? Data were collected from three sources: interviews, observations, and classroom materials. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the data. Findings suggest these teachers use the arts as historical evidence roughly for three purposes: First, to teach the spirit of an age; second, to teach the history of ordinary people invisible in official historical records; and third, to teach, both with and without art, the process of writing history. Two of the three teachers, however, failed to teach historical thinking skills through art. Keywords: history, history instruction, art, interdisciplinary approach, thinking skills, primary sources. Introduction Encouraging historical thinking in students is not a new idea in history education. Since the turn of the 20th century, many historians and history educators have argued that history consists of not only facts, but also historians’ interpretation of those facts, commonly known as the process of historical thinking, or how to analyze and interpret historical evidence, make historical arguments, and engage in historical debates (Bain, 2005; Holt, 1990; VanSledright; 2002; Wineburg, 2001). Many past reform efforts in history education have shared this commitment to teach students to think historically, in part by being engaged in the process of historical inquiry (Bradley Commission on History in Schools, 1988; National Center for History in the Schools, 1995). -

Rationality and History
Rationality and History By Georg G. Iggers (Lecture which he gave at East China Normal University, 2007) I The past two decades have seen a lively theoretical discussion internationally on how history is to be written and at the same time a conscious reorientation in the writing of history itself. The term "postmodernism" has at times been applied to the new theoretical outlook and the new historiography.1 The discussion has raised certain very fundamental questions regarding the nature of historical inquiry similar to those which have been asked regarding other forms of intellectual activity. These questions have revolved around the assumptions which have underlain historical writing - and philosophical thought - since the beginning of the Western tradition of secular history. There were two assumptions which were central to this tradition from Herodotus and Thucydides to the very recent past, namely, that there is a distinction, even if not necessarily an absolute dividing line, between fact and fiction, and similarly that there is a difference between rational thought and free imagination, even if the two may intersect In dealing with the problems of reality and rationality raised in those segments of recent philosophic thought which have identified themselves as post-modern or deconstructionist,2 this article proceeds from the assumption, rejected by this thought, that a historical text must be understood with reference to the context to which it refers and that this context contains an element of objectivity not fully identical with the subjectivity of the historian and an element of rationality which presumes elements of intersubjectivity in the methods of historical inquiry. -

Gustavo Saldanha – Ibict - Unirio, Brazil Giulia Crippa – Bologna University, Italy Concept Theory and Conceit Theory Ontology and Logology Between Conceptuality and Non- Conceptuality in Knowledge Organization Abstract: Knowledge Organization (KO) has a historically established construction based on a concept theory according to the Aristotelian model. It is from the Organon that the primary theoretical basis of documentary-language thinking is established. One can identify the construction of conceptual thinking in classical approaches such as Ranganathan's classification theory. More directly, Dahlberg's theory of concept proves the demarcating point of view of the Aristotelian foundation in KO. However, even in such approaches as Ranganathan's, one can also identify another theoretical tradition in classification theory concerned with constructing a non- conceptual approach. It is from Emanuele Tesauro that we can conceive a non-conceptual theory, establishing a given conceit theory. This research aims to point out the dichotomies and correlations between a concept theory and a non-conceptual one in KO. The research method is theoretical, structured from the perspective of a historical epistemology with a pragmatic background. At first, the historical-theoretical place of concept theory in the KO is determined. Later, the foundation of a non-conceptual theory (or conceit theory) is identified. Furthermore, the relationship between theories in historical and contemporary development in the classification theory is discussed. From the Aristotelian categories, one can understand a method for the relationship between signifier, meaning, and referent, and establish the associations of meaning between terms. The non-conceptuality theory can be historically identified in Emanuele Tesauro. From his Categorical Index, published in the Cannocchiale aristotelico, the condition of concept (and no-concept) is the apex of a variety of chain of rhetorical being, and it points to the creation and progressive unfolding of language figures (conceit elements). -

Lyn Robinson, Ernesto Priego, David Bawden Centre for Information Science City University London {L.Robinson, ernesto.priego.1, D.Bawden}@city.ac.uk Abstract The relationship between the disciplines of library and information science and of digital humanities is analysed, in terms of common topics, issues and perspectives. A model to integrate the two, based on the components of the communication chain of recorded information is proposed. It is suggested that a partial integration of the disciplines, to the extent that their concerns are reflected by this model, would be positive for the future of both. Keywords: Library and information science, Digital humanities, Disciplines, Communication chain, Information chain 1 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to examine aspects of the relationship between the disciplines of library and information science (LIS) and of digital hu- manities (DH). It is evident that there are close links in several respects, but the rationale for, and nature of, such links and synergies is unclear. We attempt here to use a simple model to clarify one aspect of the relations between the two disciplines, and to suggest how this may affect the future development of both.
