Although occupying a vast area, the distribution range of Saga pedo is fragmented and populations are small, severely threatened by habitat destruction and pollution. In Romania, the species is known to occur in xeric and semi–xeric meadows from Dobrogea, Eastern Moldavia, Transylvania and Banat. During a short trip in late June 2014, we found three nymphs of Saga pedo at Berca Mud Volcanoes, the first record of the species in the historical region of Muntenia (Southern Romania). Key words: Saga pedo, Muntenia, Romania, faunistic note, first record, distribution. Genus Saga Charpentier comprises 13 species distributed in Central and Southern Europe, Asia Minor and Western Asia (Kolics et al., 2012; Eades et al., 2015). Saga pedo (Pallas, 1771) is a bush–cricket (Tettigoniidae: Saginae) with paleogeic origins and Eurasian distribution (Krištín & Kaňuch, 2007). This carnivorous and parthenogenetic bush–cricket lives in xeric and semi–xeric grasslands with tall cover and has a large vertical amplitude, from sea level up to 1500 m a.s.l. In Romania, the species’ distribution range is localized, occurring in Dobrogea, Eastern Moldavia, Transylvania and Banat (Pricop et al., 2012). Located near Berca village (Buzău county), the Mud Volcanoes are protected as geological and biodiversity reserves (community interest site ROSCI0272), characterized by Pontic and Submediterranean herbaceous elements: Stipa stenophylla, Agropyron intermedium, Festuca valesiaca, Adonis vernalis, Inula ensifolia etc. During a short trip in late June 2014, three nymphs of Saga pedo were found in the steppic grasslands surrounding the volcanoes (45.344857°N 26.710202°E, 290 m a.s.l.). Besides Saga pedo, some other interesting xerophytic orthopteran species were observed, such as Isophya rectipennis Brunner von Wattenwyl, Conocephalus hastatus (Charpentier), Montana striata (Thunberg), or Onconotus servillei Fischer von Waldheim. Saga pedo is listed as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List and Carpathian Red List (Krištín & Iorgu, 2014), included in Appendix II of the Bern Convention and in Annex IV of the Habitats Directive (Holuša et al., 2010). Therefore, this species is subject to mandatory regular monitoring within all member countries where it occurs. Saga pedo populations in Europe are threatened by habitat destruction resulting from successional overgrowth of habitat by vegetation, afforestation and intensive grazing (Krištín & Kaňuch, 2007). Because the species’ density is low and most aspects regarding its biology and ecology are poorly understood in Romania, all new information is valuable. To ensure the survival of this species, moderate grazing activity and mowing in a specific period, preferably in August, is required. The right wing (RW) bears a scraper connected to a drum-like cell known as the 19 mirror and a left wing (LW) that overlaps the RW and bears a serrated vein on the ventral 20 side, the stridulatory file. Sound is generated with the scraper sweeping across the file, 21 producing vibrations that are amplified by the mirror. Using this sound generator, katydids 22 exploit a range of song carrier frequencies (CF) unsurpassed by any other insect group, with 23 species singing as low as 600 Hz and others as high as 150 kHz. Sound generator size has 24 been shown to scale negatively with CF, but such observations derive from studies based on 25 few species, without phylogenetic control, and/or using only the RW mirror length. We 26 carried out a phylogenetic comparative analysis involving 94 species of katydids to study the 27 relationship between LW and RW components of the sound generator and the CF of the 28 male’s mating call, while taking into account body size and phylogenetic relationships.

Introduction, aim of study Conservation biology is a significant field of biological research, because of the accelerating distinction of species mainly because of human impacts. Saginae species are amongst the largest insects of Eurasia. Their populations are attracted to xerotherm habitats that they found on rocky steppes of middle mountains. They live in isolated sparse populations being of low density especially in imago stage. Being flightless, Saga species are less able to move from one habitat to another. As particular orthopterans, these katydids are obligatory insectivores being on the top of the arthropod food pyramid in their habitat. Despite being rare, Saga species are not protected, except one representative of the genus. The matriarchal katydid, Saga pedo Pallas 1771 is the only species of its genus living in Hungary as well, in addition being one of our the largest insect in our fauna. Saga pedo is the only tetraploid species of its genus - comprising 13 species - reproducing in a parthenogenic way. 2 Its distribution area covers a territory several fold larger than that of its congeners. Conservational value in Hungary is 50.000Ft. The aim of my study was to comply an up-to date habitat list of the matriarchal katydid, and possibly to discover new populations. European Saga species appear to be monophyletic, and probably derived from Asiatic species by a Robertsonian translocation. Saga natoliae Ser- ville separated first from their common trunk, followed by Saga hellenica Kaltenbach and Saga rhodiensis Salfi. The three other species share several gene mutations and two chromosomal changes. The parthenogenetic Saga pedo (Pallas) from France and Balkans on the one hand and Saga campbelli Uvarov and Saga rammei Kaltenbach on the other hand represent two sister clades. Their proximity is in agreement with the possible origin of the pentaploid karyotype of S. pedo, by addition of haploid genomes from species close to S. campbelli and S. rammei, as proposed earlier. Molecular level of divergence indicates that the separation of French and Balkans lineages of S. pedo occurred between 420,000 and 650,000 years ago. Introduction Since several years, the GEEM is working extensively on insects of the Republic of Macedonia, in cooperation with the National History Museum and a local NGO. In 2010, I have been requested for a study mission on the Orthoptera fauna of the Mavrovo National Park. I took this opportunity to reported interesting and new species to this country. The primary observation area was the Park National Mavrovo, with some short visits to the North and West of Macedonia (Fig. 1). All following data were reported during the second half of August except Saga pedo (June). Pholidoptera ebneri RAMME, 1931 ௅ new to Republic of Macedonia This species was originally described from Mali i Polisit mountain (Ramme, 1931) in the region of Elbasan in Albania. In Macedonia, I found this species on Mount Medenica in the Mavrovo National Park. The habitat was a beech forest edge, located at 1735 m altitude. This species is very similar to the widespread Pholi- doptera macedonica Ramme, 1928, distinguished mainly by the male titillators (HARZ 1969). Two specimens have been collected.

Townspeople earned most of their income through trade. Acting as middlemen in the trade between the Levant and Central Europe, the merchants in Br ăila, Târgovi şte, Câmpulung, Bucure şti or Târg şor became involved in trading goods that were local or had been brought from beyond the Carpathians or the Black Sea. Raw materials were the goods of choice, and Wallachia had vast amounts of them: salt, cereals, livestock or animal products, skins, wax, honey; mostly imported were expensive cloth or finer goods, much sought after by the local rulers and boyars. An analysis of the documents indicates that crafts were only secondary, witness the many raw goods imported: fine cloth (brought specifically from Flanders), weapons, tools. Products gained by practicing various crafts were sold, covering the food and clothing demand for townspeople and the rural population. As was the case with Moldavia, Wallachia stood out by its vintage wine, most of it coming from vineyards neighbouring towns. The study also deals with the ethnicity of the merchants present on the Wallachia market. Tradesmen from local towns were joined by numerous Transylvanians (Bra şov, Sibiu), but also Balkans (Ragussa) or Poles (Lviv). The Transylvanian ones enjoyed some privileges, such as tax exemptions or reduced customs duties. Plangia graminea (Serville) (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) is considered a minor sporadic pest in vineyards of the Western Cape Province, South Africa, and was the focus of this study. In the past few seasons (since 2012) P. graminea appeared to have caused a substantial amount of damage leading to great concern among the wine farmers of the Western Cape Province. Very little was known about the biology and ecology of this species, and no monitoring method was available for this pest. The overall aim of the present study was, therefore, to investigate the biology and ecology of P. graminea in vineyards of the Western Cape to contribute knowledge towards the formulation of a sustainable integrated pest management program, as well as to establish an appropriate monitoring system.

Since in the region there is a high incidence of hantavirus infection, we also evaluate the importance of the barn owl in the control of rodents that transmit the hantavirus. Data on richness and relative abundance of rodents in the mu- nicipality were provided by the Centro de Controle de Zoonoses, from three half-yearly samplings with live traps. In total, 736 food items were found from the analysis of 214 pellets and fragments. Mammals corresponded to 86.0% of food items and were represented by one species of marsupial (Gracilinanus agilis) and seven species of rodents, with Calomys tener (70.9%) and Necromys lasiurus (6.7%) being the most frequent. The proportion of rodent species in barn owl pellets differed from that observed in trap samplings, with Calomys expulsus, C. tener and Oligoryzomys nigripes being consumed more frequently than expected.
