Music and Music Science 28-30 October 2004 The Royal College of Music and The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm announce a public symposium devoted to topics of common relevance to music and music science. The symposium will elucidate how composition and performance of music may interact with and profit from research in the areas of music acoustics, analysis, cognition, perception, performance, psychology, and theory. The program will contain presentations of leading representatives of the relevant areas, as well as structured discussions. A public concert of contemporary electroacoustic music will be arranged on Friday, October 29 in the concert hall at The Royal College of Music. The symposium will take place on Thursday, October 28 through Saturday, October 30 in the Auditorium (Lilla Salen) of The Royal College of Music, Valhallavägen 105. T-Bana Stadion. Admission is free. The symposium will be held in English. “Kalvos & Damian: The Car Guys of New Music” A Presentation to the Colloquium at Wesleyan University, March 29, 2018 Dennis Báthory-Kitsz From 1995 to 2008, two composers going by the pseudonyms “Kalvos” and “Damian” hosted an eponymous radio show. It became the first new music show online in the U.S., where they interviewed more than 350 composers in the studio and on road trips, set up 48 on-air concerts including a full opera with a cast of 40, arranged the first trans- Atlantic internet/radio simulcast between Vermont and the Netherlands, put on a major new music festival with 37 concerts in one weekend, held a two-day international composer combat, and won international recognition including the prestigious ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award—and they did it entirely on small contributions and by a wacky, seat-of-their-pants imagination. And in 2010, they disappeared after 560 programs. Who were they? Why did they do it? What happened to them? Here is the story of “Kalvos & Damian”—the “Car Guys” of new music. In 1950, the Columbia University Music Department requisitioned a tape recorder to use in teaching and for recording concerts. In 1951, the first tape recorder arrived, an Ampex 400, and Vladimir Ussachevsky, then a junior faculty member, was assigned a job that no one else wanted: the care of the tape recorder. This job was to have important consequences for Ussachevsky and the medium he developed. Electronic music was born. Over the next ten years, Ussachevsky and his collaborators established the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, which Ussachevsky directed for twenty years. It was the first large electronic music center in the United States, thanks to the path-breaking support of the Rockefeller Foundation and encouragement from two of the country’s leading universities. The Center became one of the best-known and most prolific sources of electronic music in the world. All of the music on this historic reissue is the result of the pioneering work of the Center and its composers. Vladimir Ussachevsky, (died 1990) who was of Russian descent, was born in 1911 in Manchuria, Inner Mongolia. He was a hereditary Mongolian prince and, as a young person, became a gifted pianist in the Romantic repertoire. After the Russian Revolution, his father was arrested and later executed in a Siberian prison for his outspoken criticism of the new Russian government. Vladimir fled from Mongolia to join the rest of his family in California. There, he graduated in music from Pomona College where he studied harmony, counterpoint, music history, and composition. After receiving his B.A. in 1935, Ussachevsky went on to get an M.M.
