THE COMPETITION The 3rd International Electronic Music Competition was inaugurated in 1968 and at the time was the only competition for composers devoted to electronic music. The Dartmouth Arts Council Prize of five hundred dollars for an outstanding composition of electronic music was awarded in 1968 to Olly W. Wilson of Oberlin College. The other finalists were Pril Smiley (U.S.A.}, Josef Malovec (Czechoslovakia}, Eugeniusz Rudnik (Poland), William Hellermann (U.S.A.}, and Bohdan Mazurek (Poland). A recording devoted to the winning works was released by Vox Productions, Inc. (TURNABOUT - TV 34301 ). Last year two composers, Peter Glushanok and Peter Klausmeyer, tied for the Dartmouth Arts Council Prize. The other finalists were Walter Kimmel and Raymond Moore. A recording of their works will be released this year. The following composers have served as judges for the two previous competitions: Milton Babbitt, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Charles Dodge, Kenneth Gaburo, Pril Smiley, Vladimir Ussachevsky and George B. Wilson. The Dartmouth Electronic Music Studio was established by the Department of Music in 1967 and designed by Jon Appleton (Dartmouth College) and James Seawright (Technical Supervisor, Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center). Run as a pilot studio for the first year, it attracted more students than could be accommodated. In January, 1969 the studio was considerably enlarged through a gift by Gerald M. Bregman, '54. The enlarged studio was designed by Jon Appleton and William Judd, a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Thayer School of Engineering, and is basically a sophisticated tape studio with synthesizing capability. It houses a large tape library consisting of entries in the several electronic music competitions, gifts and exchanges and works composed at Dartmouth. Formal instruction is offered to students through the Department of Music.
