6 20TH ANNUAL TORONTO JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL MAY 3–13 2012 TJFF.COM How fitting it is that this year’s 20th anniversary of the Toronto Jewish Film Festival is a focal point of the first ever Jewish Heritage Month in Ontario.

From its modest beginnings, the tjff has projected the breadth and depth of international Jewish documentary and feature films. It has provided our community with a unique op- portunity to explore the cultural, historical, social and political facets of Jewish life, past and present. Like no other vehicle, the tjff helps us to understand the issues, challenges, and opportunities that we face as a people. It is hard to imagine that 20 years have passed since the tjff began to deliver the finest Jewish films to Toronto audiences. Its success is evident as tjff has become a central feature of Jewish culture in Toronto. It is no coincidence that the tjff is considered one of the preeminent Jewish film festivals around the world.

I am among the thousands of faithful participants who look forward to the Toronto Jewish Film Festival each year. It informs us, it entertains us, it brings us to laughter and tears. I ap- plaud the tjff on its unique ability to attract and engage so many viewers, year after year, by featuring the broadest spectrum of Jewish themes. Our community benefits immeasurably from the efforts of all those associated with the tjff and, on behalf of uja Federation of Greater Toronto, I sincerely thank you.

Kol Hakavod, and Happy 20th! Here’s to another 20 years.

With appreciation,

Elizabeth Wolfe Chair of the Board

MAY 3–13 2012 TJFF.COM 20TH ANNUAL TORONTO JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL 9 SIDEBAR SERIES

The Toronto Jewish Film Festival celebrates the lives and work of Jewish composers who create the music for the movies, through the artistry of the film score. The 12-part series includes rarely-seen documentaries, feature films, and special guests. The Sound of Movies marks another chapter in a fasci- nating story, as the Festival continues its exploration of the predominant and extraordinary role that Jewish composers have played in the popular culture. The musical soundtrack is an aspect of movie-making that is neglected in film discussions, and is often mistakenly re- garded as an inferior art form. Yet the role of the film score— in creating mood and atmosphere, and serving as a key character—is profound. Movie music has the unique ability to reach an audience—at a very deep, unconscious level— through the powerful convergence of image and sound. The lengthy list of exceptional Jewish movie composers (in addition to the roster above), includes: Alex North (A Streetcar Named Desire), Elmer Bernstein (The Great Escape), Jerry Goldsmith (Chinatown), David Shire (The Conversation), Aaron Copland (The Heiress), as well as: Lalo Schifrin, Michael Nyman, David Raksin, Leonard Rosenman,
