    The Special Olympics WORLD GAMES FACTBOOK 3.0 1 July 2015 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES LOS ANGELES 2015: AT A GLANCE The Games: Held every two years and alternating between Summer Games and Winter Games, the Special Olympics World Games is a direct descendant of the July 1968 event organized by Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver and the City of Chicago to foster new opportunities for acceptance and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Today, Special Olympics has grown to touch more than 4.4 million athletes annually worldwide. Summer editions of the World Games were held in the U.S. through 1999, then went international, to Dublin, Ireland in 2003, Shanghai, China in 2007 and Athens, Greece in 2011. Los Angeles was selected in 2011 to host the 2015 Games. Athletes: Approximately 6,500 Special Olympics Athletes are expected to compete in Los Angeles, from 165 Special Olympics Accredited Programs from around the world. Schedule: The Games will begin with the Opening Ceremony at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on 25 July 2015, continue through 2 August, with the Closing Ceremony in the Coliseum. Most delegations will arrive on 20-21 July, and after being welcomed at Loyola Marymount University, will move to one of 85 Host Towns in communities throughout the greater Southern California area. They will move into the Athlete’s Villages at UCLA and USC on 24 July. After recording just 44 victories in their fi rst three years of existence, the Bruins went Western Regionals (Elk Grove, Calif.) 31-3 in 1978, starting and fi nishing the season strong with victories in 14 of their fi rst 15 and 17 of their last 18. During the regular season, May 4 beat Nevada, 1-0 (9 inn.) UCLA posted a 22-2 record, outscoring its opponents 101-17. In her last season in her #6 UCLA uniform, future Hall-of-Fame coach Sue Enquist led the Bruins in hitting with a .391 batting average. The May 4 beat Sacramento State, 1-0 (12 inn.) All-American also fi nished fi rst on the squad with seven doubles and tied for the team lead with two home runs. Sophomore Kathy Maurice, an May 5 beat Chico State, 1-0 All-Region honoree, added seven triples and also belted two home runs.

    RETROSPECTIVE SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES LOS ANGELES 2015: RETROSPECTIVE IN BRIEF The 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games returned to the United States for the first time since 1999. Los Angeles, successful host to both the 1932 and 1984 Olympic Games, and a forerunner of the Special Olympics World Games in 1972, produced a memorable display of sports and social action over two weeks during the summer. Highlights: C Los Angeles-record 164 delegations attended in the Games, the largest gathering of nations in City history, surpassing the total of 141 for the 1983 meeting of the International Olympic Committee Executive Board with the National Olympic Committees and 140 for the 1984 Olympic Games and 2012 I.O.C. Women’s Conference. C World Games record of 247,247 attendees across the 23 sports and ceremonies venues. C World Games record of 1,728 credentialed news media (1,514 on site) from 79 nations. C World Games first: performance records compiled in five sports and 46 new best-on-record performances set in Aquatics, Athletics, Cycling, Powerlifting and Roller Skating.   • The City of Los Angeles Gains International Recognition As America’S Leader in the Entertainment and Communications Industries
    The city of Los Angeles gains international recognition as America’s leader in the entertainment and communications industries. With numerous scenic sports and famed tourist destinations, Los Angeles has much to offer its residents and visitors. The city’s unparalleled entertainment venues include Universal Citywalk (left) and adjacent Universal Studios, as both sites are 20 minutes from UCLA. Students are also within driving distance to theme parks such as Disneyland and Six Flags Magic Mountain. Less than five miles from campus is Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade (above, left), an upscale shopping and dining complex in the downtown area of Santa Monica. Third Street is widely considered a premier shopping and entertainment destination on the Westside, drawing crowds from all over Los Angeles. Staples Center has been home to the NBA’s Lakers and Clippers since the 1999-2000 season, as well as the NHL’s Kings and WNBA’s Sparks. One of the nation’s premier multi-purpose venues, Staples Center also hosts sold-out concerts and other popular entertainment events. The arena hosted the NBA’s All-Star Game in 2004 and 2011. The Los Angeles area features numerous beaches with fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean. Venice Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Malibu are within short drives from UCLA’s campus, which rests about five miles east of the Pacific and enjoys cool evening temperatures due to its coastal proximity. One of baseball’s most iconic franchises, the Los Angeles Dodgers have called Dodger Stadium their home since 1962, five seasons after moving to Los Angeles from Brooklyn.
