Genesis, Cosmology, and Evolution
Ge n e s i s , Co s m o l o gy , & EVOLUTION By Rabbi Hillel Goldberg “There are two kinds of secrets in the world, make-believe secrets and real secrets. A make-believe secret is one that depends on its concealment . when it is revealed, the mystery vanishes and the se c r et loses its fascination. Such is the secret of the . stage magician. When the . trick becomes apparent . the magic disappears. “Such is not the case with the real secret. A real secret can be open and apparent to everyone . Behind the Miracle
ב“ה An inspiring story for your Shabbos table ערב שבת פרשת שמות, כ׳ טבת, תשע״ו HERE’S Erev Shabbos Parshas Shemos, January 1, 2016 my STORY BEHIND THE Generously MIRACLE sponsored by the RABBI ZEV SEGAL first met the Rebbe in the early 1950s, shortly after he had assumed leadership of Chabad-Lubavitch Iand shortly after I was appointed chairman of the Israel Commission of the Rabbinical Council of America. In this capacity I was involved with issues affecting religious life in the State of Israel, which were of great interest to the Rebbe. And so, we frequently met to discuss the highly controversial issues of the day, such as religious women serving in the IDF, the place of non-Jews in the Jewish state, how the state should define who is a Jew, and so on. Many a time, I came to see him at about midnight and left at four in the morning. During those meetings, it became apparent to me that the Rebbe had a tremendous amount of knowledge of what was going on in Israel, including many minute details. He knew who was who in the Knesset and in every one that the Rebbe had studied at the Sorbonne and was of its subcommittees. He knew of every government as well versed in the sciences as in Torah. This was meeting on every subject, and who was against or unheard of in a chasidic Rebbe, and it impressed Ben for a particular position. It was quite an experience Gurion to no end. to listen to him speak about government meetings As my work with the Rabbinical Council of America as though he was there. -
Yes, We Can Rely on Miracles
LET’S LEARN CHASSIDUS With Rabbi Shais Taub But how did Og know that’s how Avraham would react? There is, after YES, all, such a thing as a lost cause. If Og was serious about trying to get Avraham killed, he should have tried WE CAN to talk Avraham into a dangerous situation that seemed harmless. What made Og think he could get RELY ON Avraham to walk into an obvious deathtrap? And another mystery: The MIRACLES Medrash tells us that when Og WHY YOU HAVE arrived to tell Avraham about Lot, Og found Avraham baking matzah. TO BE A LITTLE (Do not wonder how Avraham could have baked matzah 400 CRAZY TO EAT years before the Exodus. Chazal tell us [Kiddushin 82a, Yoma 28b]: MATZAH “Avraham fulfilled the entire Torah before it was given.”) But why does the Medrash tell us this detail—that Avraham was baking matzos—as part of the story of how Og tried to set up Avraham? g, the giant who escaped the Flood, informed Avraham that his Why is it relevant? nephew Lot had been captured by the Four Kings. Og arrived and saw Avraham Now, there was no way that Avraham could defeat the Four Kings, baking matzah. Then he tried to talk but Og wanted to marry Sarah. In his mind, if he could goad Avraham him into getting himself killed. But into going out on what was essentially a kamikaze mission, he could what’s the significance of matzah in Omove in afterwards and marry Avraham’s widow (Bereishis Rabbah 42:8). -

Tina Hamrin-Dahl
TINA HAmrin-DAHL This-Worldly and Other-Worldly A Holocaust pilgrimage Pilgrims and the Holocaust Częstochowa is a town known for a shrine to the Black Madonna and every year millions of pilgrims from all over the world come to this Virgin Mary town in south-west Poland. My story is about another kind of pilgrimage, which in a sense is connected to the course of events which occurred in Częstochowa on 22 September 1942. In the morning, the German Captain Degenhardt lined up around 8,000 Jews and commanded them to step either to the left or to the right. This efficient judge from the police force in Leipzig was rapid in his deci- sions and he thus settled the destinies of thousands of people.1 After the Polish Defensive War of 1939, the town (renamed Tschenstochau) had been occupied by Nazi Germany, and incorporated into the General Government. The Nazis marched into Częstochowa on Sunday, 3 September 1939, two days after they invaded Poland. The next day, which became known as Bloody Monday, approximately 150 Jews were shot dead by the Germans. On 9 April 1941, a ghetto for Jews was created. During World War II about 45,000 of the Częstochowa Jews were killed by the Germans; almost the entire Jewish community living there. The late Swedish Professor of Oncology, Jerzy Einhorn (1925–2000), lived in the borderhouse Aleja 14, and heard of the terrible horrors; a ghastliness that was elucidated and concretized by all the stories told around him (Einhorn 2006: 186–9). Jerzy Einhorn survived the ghetto, but was detained at the Hasag-Palcery concentration camp between June 1943 and January 1945. -
Making the Biblical Books of Prophets Accessible
From Joshua to Malachi Making the biblical books of Prophets accessible • RIVKAH LAMBERT ADLER ost Jews have never read the entire Hebrew Bible. The Steinsaltz Center in Jerusalem would like to change that. A Hebrew-English edition of The Steinsaltz Ne- vi’im, with commentary by Rabbi Adin Even-Is- Mrael Steinsaltz, recently published in partnership with Koren Publishers, is a companion to The Steinsaltz Humash and The Steinsaltz Ketuvim. Rabbi Steinsaltz was born into a secular home in Jerusalem in 1937. In 1988, writing for Time magazine, journalist Richard N. Ostling called Steinsaltz a “once-in-a-millennium scholar.” Steinsaltz is best known for opening up Talmud study to people outside the walls of a traditional yeshiva. He’s spent a good part of his life making classic Jewish texts accessible to the non-He- brew-speaking world. In late 2016, Steinsaltz suffered a stroke, leaving him unable to speak, but his son and executive director of the Steinsaltz Center, Rabbi Meni Even-Israel, has dedicated himself to finishing his father’s work and getting it published. All content continues to be reviewed and approved by Rabbi Steinsaltz. With this new volume, Steinsaltz turned his attention to the books of Prophets, which begin where the Five Books of Moses leaves off. Regarding the need for yet another commentary, he wrote in the introduction, “To this day, thank God, there are many scholars and students of the Bible raising unique questions and challenges that require attention, analysis and investigation. All these illuminate the eternal words of the Torah RABBI ADIN STEINSTALTZ.
