It was the Perfect Storm… A series of unfortunate events • LCC pulled out of Colne in 2017 • The death of Jim Smart caused the ending of the town’s two Youth Clubs in 2019 • The impact and consequences from the Coronavirus pandemic Notoriety became a Badge of Honour After repeatedly raising matters with the Police… We turned to the schools… And more conversations led to more interest… …and the concept of CYAG was born. Forming and co-ordinating links with: Burnley FC in the Park Primary Primet School Fisher More School Community School The Colne Business The Pendle Youth Positive Action in Improvement Inspiring Grace Forum the Community District (BID) The Pendle Leisure Go Velo Trust We kept going and made more connections: Burnley Boys Colne Town Pendle Borough Mini Mouths and Girls Club Council Council Laneshaw The Trawden Parish Foulridge Parish Bridge Parish Neighbourhood Council Council Council Police Team Earnie’s Colne FC More and more people came forward to help, offering support & resources: Barnfield Open Gate Open Door Construction Our MP A Restorative Trawden Judo Councillors Junior Schools Justice Guru Club Skipton Sainsbury’s Building Society And, of course, LCC. Suspicion in the town that Colne is always “missing out” or being left to its own devices. Nelson’s Youth Zone Blackburn’s Youth Zone But there is always HOPE As well as the LCC Offer, Burnley FC in the Community has an SLA to establish a Colne Youth Hub What has CYAG done? In three months, we have: Registered as a CIO Charity (reg.nr.1192629) Had pledges of £51,300 Received numerous offers of in- kind support Reached out right across the community Broken down silo working Built up a network of business, community, educational & volunteer bodies CYAG has given a list of Priority Young People to LCC and Burnley FC in Community, so they can work 1:1 with them and their families on Friday nights and as part of the Bright Sparks Programme. We have shared this list with the schools and we are creating an end- to-end process for reporting ASB with key businesses. We have a range of different skills in our Management Team: As well as legendary ex-Youth Worker, Anne McGladdery (pictured), we have Jerry Stanford, who founded Colne’s First Youth Club and heads the Colne Safety Partnership, David Cockburn-Price, Financial Director and Entrepreneur, Margaret Foxley, former teacher and Restorative Justice expert and Sarah Cockburn- Price, fund raiser and marketing professional. What Next? Supporting all the Young People in Colne and its Villages • Moving beyond the young people in danger of getting involved in the Criminal Justice System, the Neighbourhood Police Team is drawing up a longer list and stakeholders will work to funnel these young people to our planned programme of activities • We aim to make much of these outreach activities mobile, but we need a base and that base exists… ◦ Working with Burnley FC in the Community, Colne FC and the Schools, we will use our grant-funded mobile floodlights to host football matches and skill sessions ◦ Examples of other training/information sessions will include cookery & food hygiene skills with renowned chef, Gill Watson, bike maintenance with Go Velo, work placements and factory tours with local businesses, and lectures on the dangers of drugs, alcohol & criminal behaviour i.e. introduce them to “inspirational adults”. Could we have a Two Track System for Colne? Simultaneously… • Work with the handful of children LCC and Burnley FC in the in danger of entering the Criminal Community Justice System and their families. • Work to eradicate “aimlessness” and boredom in the young in Colne by providing diverse, CYAG, Schools, the Police, LCC and enriching activities with Burnley FC in the Community and inspirational adults to enable the other stakeholders young people to not only be set on the right path, but also be busy, active and engaged. Let’s discuss how together we can make this happen! Any Questions?.
