Centre Stage the Pipeline of Bame Talent
CENTRE STAGE THE PIPELINE OF BAME TALENT AndrewAndrew Lloyd Lloyd Webber Webber FoundationFoundation INTRODUCTION— hen I produced Bombay Dreams over a decade ago and was privileged Wto introduce the marvellous music of A R Rahman to a West End audience, one of our greatest difficulties was finding enough Asian actors. BAME diversity in the performing arts has once again been high on the agenda this year, from the runaway success of Hamilton on Broadway to the latest announcement from Arts Council England of £4.6 million to boost diversity. Very often the discussion is focussed on increasing the representation of diverse ethnicities on stage and this is crucially important. However, I’ve been acutely aware that one of the biggest issues is the lack of trained diverse talent coming through. Casting directors and theatre producers alike often complain that they’d like to cast more Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic performers but that they don’t get enough turning up to audition. Inspired by some of the success stories coming out of the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation’s scholarship programme – such as Emmanuel Kojo who is interviewed in these pages – the Foundation decided to commission this " I PASSIONATELY research. The aim was to come up with some positive recommendations that BELIEVE THAT can be adopted by people involved at every stage of the talent pipeline from THE STAGE NEEDS school to stage. TO REFLECT THE DIVERSITY OF THE UK I passionately believe that the stage needs to reflect the diversity of the POPULATION OR IT UK population or it risks becoming side-lined. -

The Lit & Phil | Newcastle Libraries
-1st ber Dec m em ve b o e r N 2 h t 0 1 8 3 2 The Lit & Phil | Newcastle Libraries Introduction Books on Tyne – Newcastle’s mini literary festival – celebrates a Sense of Place this year. We can look forward to much that is local and special. Michael Chaplin takes us on a trip along the river. Harry Pearson provides a personal view of twenty years of North East football. Chris Phipps re-lives the time when Newcastle was capital of cool – the years of The Tube. Live Theatre, a creative treasure that goes from strength to strength will be celebrated. There is a virtual tour of much- loved Whitby and delicate meditations on Lancashire beaches. As an avid listener to BBC radio, I am particularly looking forward to Radio Postcards – producer Sarah Blunt’s vivid sound pictures. Local historians look back to a time when the Tyne bustled with industry and further afield, Kate Adie views the First World War through the eyes of the women who struggled for admission into this world of men. Also in the mix we find crime with Ann Cleeves, Hazel Osmond and Mari Hannah, and master storyteller David Almond launches the festival in a new collaboration with Jack Arthurs. Throw in romance, poetry, humour and much more, in two fabulous and contrasting venues… what’s not to like? Reclaiming the Female Body and Self-Deprecation in Stand-Up Comedy

Positives and negatives: Reclaiming the female body and self-deprecation in stand-up comedy. Abstract Drawing on existing research into feminist humour, this article argues that many of the functions of self-deprecation within comic performance that have been identified and explored in relation to the American context of the late 90s and early 2000s are still evident on the current UK circuit. Self-deprecation in stand-up comedy by women continues to be understood as both positive (as part of the rise of popular feminisms) and negative (as reinforcing patriarchal norms). These contradictory understandings of self-deprecation in stand-up comedy are always inextricably linked to the identities of the audiences for such humour. I consider how emergent female stand-up performers may rationalise and understand the role self-deprecation plays within their own work in the current British context.
