Articles in Mathematics Research Reports are freely available for a world-wide audi- ence, with no author publication charges (diamond open access) but high production value, thanks to financial support from the Anatole Katok Center for Dynamical Sys- tems and Geometry at the Pennsylvania State University and to the infrastructure of the Centre Mersenne. The articles in MRR are research announcements of significant ad- vances in all branches of mathematics, short complete papers of original research (up to about 15 journal pages), and review articles (up to about 30 journal pages). They communicate their contents to a broad mathematical audience and should meet high standards for mathematical content and clarity. The entire Editorial Board approves the acceptance of any paper for publication, and appointments to the board are made by the board itself. -
Winston Groom Named 2011 Harper Lee Award Recipient
Winston Groom named 2011 Harper Lee Award recipient Winston Groom of Point Clear, Ala., has been named the 2011 recipient of the Harper Lee Award for Alabama’s Distinguished Writer of the Year. Groom will receive the award at the Alabama Writers Symposium in Monroeville on May 6 at the annual luncheon. The conference will meet May 5-7. “I am truly honored to be chosen for the Harper Lee Award, and look forward to the Symposium,” said Groom. The Alabama Writers’ Forum, a partnership program of the Alabama State Council on the Arts, coordinates the process to select the Harper Lee Award recipient annually from nominations from the field. The honor is presented annually by Alabama Southern Community College at the Symposium. It is made possible through a generous grant from George F. Landegger. “One of the first books my twin sons fell in love with was Winston Groom's Only,” said Sue Brannan Walker, Alabama Writers’ Forum board president and Poet Laureate of Alabama. “From his fabulous Forrest Gump book and film to my personal favorites, A Storm in Flanders and Patriotic Fire, Winston has impressed with his humor, his depth, his versatility, and his range of subject matter. Robert Maynard Hutchins, 1899-1977
The Yale Law Journal Volume 86, Number 8, July 1977 Robert Maynard Hutchins, 1899-1977 Herbert Brownellt Robert Maynard Hutchins, who died at Santa Barbara, California, on May 15, 1977, was Dean of the Yale Law School in 1928-29. He had served as Secretary of Yale University from 1923 to 1927. Upon his graduation from the Yale Law School in 1925, he joined the Law School's faculty as a Lecturer, a position he held from 1925 to 1927. He was Acting Dean of the Law School during the academic year 1927-28. Dean Hutchins was thirty years old when he left the Law School to become President and later Chancellor of the University of Chicago. Dean Hutchins' active leadership in the field of legal education during this brief span of years was notable for the innovations he sponsored in the Law School's curriculum and in particular for the establishment of the Institute of Human Relations. His erudition, his inquisitive mind, and his theories of proper relationships among law, economics, political science, and psychology left an indelible im- print upon the Yale Law School of his time. His initiatives, more- over, led to fruitful interdisciplinary research programs that have had lasting effects upon legal education in this country. The main endeavors of Dean Hutchins' career, and his publicly known achievements, came in later years while he was a founder, Chief Executive Officer, and President of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, based in California. But many of the in- gredients of his brilliant intellectual success first came to light during his deanship at the Yale Law School. -

Splitt "It requires no tabulation of statistics to prove that the young athlete who gives himself up for months, to training under a professional coach for a grueling contest, staged to focus the attention of thousands of people, and upon which many thousands of dollars will be staked, will find no time or energy for serious intellectual effort. The compromises that have to be made to keep such a student in the college and to pass them through to a degree give an air of insincerity to the whole university-college regime." 1 —Henry Smith Pritchett, Former MIT President (1900-1906) and President of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (1906-1930). Sol Gittleman, a former provost at Tufts University, wrote to me with reference to Brad Wolverton’s recent article, “Rise in Fancy Academic Centers for Athletes Raises Questions of Fairness,”2 saying: "This would be a joke, if it weren't for articles that state how public universities are losing out in hiring to the well-heeled privates. So, while faculty flee to the private sector, the public universities build these Xanadus for athletes. Have we lost our minds? Where are the presidents?” Re: Dr. Gittleman’s first question: Have we lost our minds?—Based on the sad state of affairs in America’s system of higher education, it would certainly seem so, but there is no way to prove it as yet. However, taking a queue from Henry Pritchett, it requires no tabulation of statistics to prove that America’s system of higher education has been reeling under the negative impact of over commercialized college sports. -
Father Ted's Obituary
For Immediate Release Feb. 27, 2015 Father Theodore Hesburgh of Notre Dame dies at age 97 Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C., president of the University of Notre Dame from 1952 to 1987, a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, and one of the nation’s most influential figures in higher education, the Catholic Church, and national and international affairs, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 26) at Holy Cross House adjacent to the University. He was 97. “We mourn today a great man and faithful priest who transformed the University of Notre Dame and touched the lives of many,” said Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., Notre Dame’s president. “With his leadership, charisma and vision, he turned a relatively small Catholic college known for football into one of the nation’s great institutions for higher learning. “In his historic service to the nation, the Church and the world, he was a steadfast champion for human rights, the cause of peace and care for the poor. “Perhaps his greatest influence, though, was on the lives of generations of Notre Dame students, whom he taught, counseled and befriended. “Although saddened by his loss, I cherish the memory of a mentor, friend and brother in Holy Cross and am consoled that he is now at peace with the God he served so well.” In accord with Father Hesburgh’s wishes, a customary Holy Cross funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at Notre Dame in coming days for his family, Holy Cross religious, University Trustees, administrators, and select advisory council members, faculty, staff and students. -
