Tasmania . 170 Chapter 1: Introduction In Australia there are four Catholic cathedrals designed in the Romanesque style (Canberra, Newcastle, Port Pirie and Geraldton) and one Anglican cathedral (Parramatta). These buildings are significant in their local communities, but the numbers of people who visit them each year are minuscule when compared with the numbers visiting Australia's most famous Romanesque building, the large Sydney retail complex known as the Queen Victoria Building. God and Mammon, and the Romanesque serves them both. Do those who come to pray in the cathedrals, and those who come to shop in the galleries of the QVB, take much notice of the architecture? Probably not, and yet the Romanesque is a style of considerable character, with a history stretching back to Antiquity. It was never extensively used in Australia, but there are nonetheless hundreds of buildings in the Romanesque style still standing in Australia's towns and cities. Perhaps it is time to start looking more closely at these buildings? They will not disappoint. The heyday of the Australian Romanesque occurred in the fifty years between 1890 and 1940, and it was largely a brick-based style. As it happens, those years also marked the zenith of craft brickwork in Australia, because it was only in the late nineteenth century that Australia began to produce high-quality, durable bricks in a wide range of colours. -

Jewish Identities in Synagogue Architecture of Galicia and Bukovina

Rosengarten must be rated as rather a modest one, but it was certainly also a very unusual one. Apart from Albert, Rosengarten used for first names also Albrecht and Abraham. His initial rise to fame lay with the claim of being the first Jewish architect to design a major synagogue, in Kassel, completed in 1839 (figs. 1 & 2). In Hamburg, where he settled after the great fire of 1842, he kept himself busy with diverse secular commissions, as well as with two relatively modest synagogues in the 1850s (figs. 3 & 4). Very few of his buildings made it into the professional journals of the time. Drawing from archival and printed primary material, I reconstruct how the Middle Ages gained new explanatory relevance as the origins of nineteenth- century German institutions and phenomena. I consider the historical interpretation of the medieval world at its broadest, not limited to scholarly debate, but also as it encompassed fiction, art, architecture, music, social science, law, and politics. Each chapter examines a figure drawn from these fields and each also moves chronologically through the century. -

High and Mighty: A Comparative Analysis of the Wood-Framed Steeples of John McArthur, Jr. Abstract In order to understand this early period of John McArthur, Jr.’s career, this thesis examines the ideological principles, architectural professionalism and influences, and structural experimentation and performance of two remarkably tall wood-framed steeples designed by McArthur. Understanding these steeple designs perhaps sheds light on what compelled him, later in his career, to repeatedly set out to design structures that would be the highest in their cities or country. John McArthur, Jr.'s designs for the steeples of two Presbyterian churches, while they were stylistically representative of many churches of the Round-Arched style built during that period, they were remarkably high. Their unusual height, particularly Tenth Presbyterian in Philadelphia, rearing up to 248 feet, is the result of a confluence of factors. They represent the result of competition among ambitious church congregations, competition among architects in an emerging profession, and McArthur’s own structural confidence. -

Architectural Styles, Vernacular Architecture, Construction Materials and Methods, and Agricultural Outbuildings
INTRODUCTION OVERVIEW Wisconsin architecture has developed considerably since the first shelters were built by fur traders, missionaries, and early settlers. The varied immigrant and native stock that populated the state and the wealth of natural resources available lent a diversity to Wisconsin building stock nearly unsurpassed in the nation. In this section, Wisconsin architecture is summarized from four perspectives: architectural styles, vernacular architecture, construction materials and methods, and agricultural outbuildings. Each of the four categories is approached from the variety of types that occur in Wisconsin. In the cases of architectural styles and construction materials and methods, the Wisconsin perspective is tempered by a national perspective summarized from various secondary sources (see bibliographies). The sections concerning vernacular architecture and agricultural outbuildings are approached nearly exclusively from a Wisconsin perspective. Because information is not as readily available concerning these aspects of architectural history, the Historic Preservation Division staff formulated the terminology to assist field surveyors and data entry staff. The secondary sources and manuscripts listed in the bibliographies were essential to the development of the types presented. The descriptions presented in all four sections should be useful in establishing historical and architectural contexts for evaluation purposes and for determining levels of significance, similar to the "Historical Background" sections throughout the rest of the report. However, the architecture summaries are not nearly as complete as the "Historical Background" sections. At present, analysis of Wisconsin's architecture is limited by a lack of scholarly research and field studies. The' intensive survey reports that have been prepared for several communities have greatly increased available knowledge of Wisconsin architecture. -

Trinity College Digital Repository, http://digitalrepository.trincoll.edu/theses/200 Richard Upjohn and Richard Morris Hunt: The Evolution of Newport Domestic Architecture Caroline Peck Senior Art History Honors Thesis Professor Kathleen Curran May 2012 Peck 1 Introduction America’s largest and grandest home, the Biltmore (1890; figure 1), was commissioned by George Vanderbilt (1862-1914) to be built in Asheville, North Carolina. The house was designed by Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895) and bears resemblance to three sixteenth century châteaux in the Loire Valley, France: Blois, Chenonceau, and Chambord. However, Biltmore was not the first of the Vanderbilt’s homes to replicate European designs and aesthetics from previous centuries. The most famous of these mansions were in Newport, and include Marble House (1888-1892; figure 2) and the Breakers (1893; figure 3), both designed by Hunt. Centuries after these homes were built in Newport, they continue to be synonymous with the wealth and decadence of Gilded Age Newport, and indeed, Gilded Age America. Hunt’s Newport legacy was based upon his work for the Vanderbilts, but his Newport career, perhaps surprising, began years before his work for this prominent family.
