(Received on March 1, 2012; accepted on June 6, 2012) The characteristics of Huimin high phosphorus limonite ore and the beneficiation of this iron ore by sodium-carbonate-added carbothermic reduction, ultrafine grinding and magnetic separation were investi- gated. Iron particle size in reduced ore without Na2CO3 additive is tiny and the fayalite is abundant. It is indicated that the formation of fayalite is the main hindrance to accelerate the reduction of limonite. With a mass ratio of Na2O3 to ore of 10% additive, the reduction of limonite can be reinforced. The reinforcing affect may be caused by the increase of the reducing reaction activity of FeO and the acceleration of the carbon gasification reaction rate. Fluorapatite were not reduced in the low temperature reduction process and entered to gangue phases, after ultrafine grinding-magnetic separation process, a qualified iron con- centrate with 76.47% Fe, a recovery of 73.20% is obtained with simultaneous decrease in the phosphorus content down to 0.25%. Reflecting on the Moche Past 2000 Years of Mirrors in Andean Art Reflecting on the Moche Past Mirror Frame Moche, Loma Negra, Peru, AD 500-800 Gilded copper/bronze H. 9 ¼ in. W 5 in. irrors, useful for seeing one’s own image, or for reflecting light, are a commonplace today. But in ancient M times pooled water was the only readily available reflective surface. Artificial mirrors could be made only by processing rare natural substances or forging new man-made materials. Vanity is a universal human trait, and ancient peoples undoubtedly sought to admire their own faces, coiffures, and bodies. Numerous ceramic vessels portray individuals with elaborate coiffures or using pincers (tweezer-like tools) to pluck facial hair. At least two ceramic vessels portray women holding small black disks – presumably mirrors - up to their faces. After the con- quest, Garcilaso de la Vega wrote about mirrors: "Los espejos en que se miravan Las mugeres de LA sangre real eran de Plata muy brunida y Las comunes en acofar [The mirrors in which the women of royal blood looked were of highly polished silver; commoners used bronze mirrors]" libro II cap xxxviii. But pre-Columbian mirrors were undoubtedly used for purposes far more significant than facilitating personal adornment. Mirrors made by labori- ously mining, shaping, and grinding dark, shiny minerals were exchanged over long distances, incorporated in public and private rituals, and sometimes were buried with the dead. Today’s mirrors are made from glass or plastic sheets coated with silver or an- other reflective material. While glass was never manufactured in the ancient Americas, dark volcanic glass – obsidi- an – was sometimes ground flat and polished to produce a reflective sur- face. -

The topics are: archaeometric studies of obsidian sources and artifacts; new methods of obsidian sources discrimination; genesis of the Central Mediterranean obsidian outcrops exploited during the Prehistory; obsidians as an edutainment tool; a section is dedicated to studies of characterization of ancient glasses. Get Reactive in System 96! Uroboros has created two unique glass formulas for System 96 that are designed to create an interface color, or a reac on, when melted against certain other colors. This occurs when ions from the two adjacent glasses migrate and mingle when the gl asses become hot and ß uid. Given the right glass chemistry, the comingled ions form a very thin colored line, or reac on. Since our formulas react to create a no ceably reddish hue we named them Red Reac ves: as in Red Reac ve Transparent, and Red Reac ve Opal. The primary ingredient needed in a glass to generate a reac on color with our Reac ve glass is Copper. Copper is present in many blue and blue-green glass colors, but in some cases in too low a concentra on to create a no ceable reac on. For simplicity, all System 96 colors have been graded for their poten al to react into three categories: Strong, Medium, and Mild. See them all listed in the chart on the back of this page. You will Þ nd that the intensity of the reac on color will get stronger with longer, ho er, or repeat Þ rings. This is because the copper ions have more me to mingle with their friendly reac ve partners in the adjacent glass. The chart rankings are based on a typical single Þ ring cycle. You could get a Medium reac on from a color graded as Mild by Þ ring it ho er, or Þ ring mul ple mes. -

Continued on page 10 SAY HELLO TO THE “PURPOSE-DRIVEN SHOPPER” Everyone needs a purpose. According to a new study of 19,000 consumers in 28 countries, ages 18 to 73, many are willing to pay for it. Nearly one-third of the consumers polled said they would stop buying a brand that is inconsistent with their purpose, such as those associated with negative social or environmental impacts, or lack sustainability—in other words, products produced in ways that may damage long term natural resources to satisfy short term needs. But nearly two thirds also said they would be willing to pay up to 35% more for brands consistent with their purpose. What does this crucial insight mean to diamond and jewelry retailers? Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral’s ‘How Did They Do That?’ Family Trail Christ Church has teamed up with local makers to create a fascinating self-guided trail which explores the huge amount of work and the many materials and methods that were used to create the Cathedral building and its priceless collection of artefacts. Ever wondered how to make stone look like fur, how to carve wood or the secret to making coloured glass? Here’s your chance to find out, with help from the ex- perts. Stained glass windows tell stories. They were originally used to teach people who couldn’t read about the Bible. With sunlight shining through them, casting bright colours around the Cathedral, they provided quite a show. Almost like an early form of cinema, before films were even thought of… What is glass and how is it made? Glass is basically molten sand (silica). As obsidian it occurs naturally in volcanos. About 7,000 years ago people discovered that by adding soda ash or potash and lime to sand they could melt it themselves at a much lower temperature. How can you make different coloured glass? Coloured glass is produced by adding min- erals or metal oxides to the glass mix. -
