PICTURE In 1939 a group of movie industry executives gathered to remember the passing of a friend. Jack Cohn, one of the founding partners of Columbia PIONEERS Pictures, was concerned that it only seemed to be funerals that brought industry friends together. Motivated by this thought, Cohn and a group of industry peers started the Picture Pioneers Inc., an organization to bring people in the industry TRUST together for fellowship and friends willing to help each other out in time of need. In the beginning membership was restricted to only those who had FUND been in the industry for 25 years. are thrilled to celebrate Pioneer of the Year: Many of the original Picture Pioneers members had help to start the major studios in Hollywood. In the first year over 200 other industry members joined, including some Canadians, among them pioneer theatre exhibitor Oscar Hanson and John Fitzgibbons, who later became President of Famous Players. These men MICHAEL MOSCA brought together their friends Clair Hague and Ray Lewis to work on forming a Canadian equivalent and by the end of 1940 ratified a charter forming the Canadian Picture Pioneers. John L'Ecuyer REMEMBERING PAUL WROE 1943 ~ 2019

Paul Wroe was a true gentleman of our industry and will be missed by everyone who knew him. He joined the Canadian Picture Pioneers in 1965. He was honoured by the CPP twice, in 1990 with an ancillary award and then in 1997 as Pioneer of the Year.

Paul was born and raised in Toronto. He graduated with a Chartered Accountant degree from Clarkson Gordon (now Ernst Thisn last year we lost the followingemoriam members across Canada & Young) in 1967. While at Clarkson Gordon, Paul was first introduced to the motion picture industry doing audits on several companies owned by Paul Nathanson, whose father N.L. Nathanson founded Famous Players and Odeon Theatres. In 1968 Paul accepted a job offer from Paul Nathanson as Treasurer of Empire Films Limited and Sovereign Film Distribution which British Columbia Manitoba involved distribution of Walt Disney films, both 16mm and 35mm, and the operation of the Mustang Drive-In Theatre circuit. Carol Burgoyne Al Laschuk In 1971, Herb Mathers incorporated Bellevue Film Distributors Ltd. and Paul became the company’s Vice President. Bellevue � took over the Walt Disney franchise from Empire Films and in 1972 obtained the Twentieth Century Fox franchise for Canada. Bill Young Paul worked with both Bellevue Films and Paul Nathanson’s companies until 1980 when Paul Nathanson passed away, Ontario although he continued work on Nathanson’s estate for another 2 years.

Quebec Eric Ball In 1975, Paul and Herb Mathers incorporated Victoria Film Services Limited and consolidated the film warehouse operations of Bellevue Film Distributors and Victoria Shipping Services Ltd. Paul became President of Victoria Film Services. Mariette Morin Herb Black In 1979 Victoria Film Services acquired Mavety Film Delivery Pasquale Cioffi Troy Durand adding film delivery services to Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. Further expanding their business, Victoria Film Marc Coté Lois Forbes purchased Alan Mclean Delivery Service Ltd., a Toronto messenger courier service. Mariette Morin Don Matsumoto Paul was President of Victoria Film Services until 2002 when Paul Wroe he sold it to Technicolor, operating now as Canada Cinema Distribution. Although Paul retired from day to day work, he remained active in business and helping with industry charities.

Paul has played a very active role in the Canadian Picture Pioneers until his passing in July. He first joined the Board of Directors in 1984. He chaired many event committees and served on the executive. Paul was also elected in 1996 as a Trustee of the CPP Trust Fund and in 2003 he was appointed Chairperson.

Paul had a philanthropic nature and along with The CPP also CANADIAN served as dedicated executive with other charities. 75 PICTURE YEARSPIONEERS Paul was married to Mary Lynn for 52 years.
