CK Magazine Cover July-August 2011 Christ the King Catholic Church Oklahoma City | www.ckokc.org | ADVENT-CHRISTMAS 2016 magazine CK Sacred Space Staff Dear Parishioners Directory It’s hard to believe that Christmas and a New Year are rapidly coming upon us. With the weather that PARISH OFFICE we have had it is not, as the song says, “beginning to look a lot like Christmas.” However, Advent Pastor gives us the opportunity to truly prepare in a Rev. Richard Stansberry spiritual way for Christmas, and a new year gives Business Manager us the opportunity to reflect back on the old year Patrick Cullen and look forward to the new one. The reality of life [email protected] is that one never knows what will happen in a new year and 2016 certainly had its share of surprises. Communications & Webmaster The world that we are living in grows ever more Kelly Fanning complex and, sadly, more and more divided. That is why it is up to us as people of [email protected] faith to do all that we can to help make the world a better place. Certainly there are Membership & Scheduling many challenges, but there have been challenges of one kind or another since the Jayne Clarke beginning of time. I hope that all of you have a wonderful Advent, Christmas and [email protected] New Year’s, and know that as your pastor one of the things I am most grateful for Music Ministry is being able to be here with you and serve you. I know that I cannot be all things Edwin Day, Director/Organist to all people at all times, but I think we have worked well together and together we [email protected] will continue to build the Kingdom of God and go out and make Disciples. Bob Shull, Assistant Director We have received the results from the Gallup organization about our recent [email protected] parish survey and a 3-hour webinar with them to go over the results. While the session was good, it was somewhat over my head (and others, too), so we are still Nursery working with Gallup to help formulate some practices going forward that will position Becky Cornelius, Coordinator us to become a more engaged parish. For the most part the survey confirmed [email protected] what we already knew – only about 20% of our parish is actively engaged in the Discipleship & Evangelization life of the parish, which can be disappointing but is not that far below the average Jenni Butch, Director of most other churches. There were several positives in the survey indicating that [email protected] many of our parishioners are satisfied with their lives. However, there were also Cindy Rice, Secretary areas that most of us can improve upon, such as spending more time in prayer, [email protected] reaching out to others and volunteering. We have a committee which is made up Margaret Tunell, Secretary of members from the Stewardship Committee, Parish Council, as well as the staff, [email protected] Dana Hill and Chip Carter, and we have been working very hard with the Gallup organization to produce a report with more practical and less statistical info, which Parish Life will be easier to understand and act on. Pam Cullen, Director What does it mean to be engaged? Engaged members are engaged not only [email protected] in their own faith life, but in the life of the parish through participation in Mass and Kathy Arambula, Secretary the Sacraments on a regular basis. They also volunteer and encourage others [email protected] to do so. One of the blessings of our parish is that we are somewhat above Youth Ministry average in household income and education levels. On the flipside we all know Antonio Guzman, Director that sometimes that means we are involved in so many activities and events that [email protected] Church gets put on a lower priority. That certainly doesn’t mean that people with higher incomes and education don’t value faith and their relationship with God, SCHOOL OFFICE but it can mean that they are busy with many obligations. We all know how hard Amy Feighny, Head of School, PK-8 it is to juggle family, work and the many other charities and organizations that so [email protected] many of you are involved in. I am always so proud when I go to non-profit and Robert Crump, Head of School, Jr High civic events around the city of how many of our parishioners are involved. [email protected] The reality is that for many people being not that engaged seems perfectly fine. Helen McBennett, Secretary Neither I nor the committee intends to judge people or tell them how to establish [email protected] their priorities. Our goal is to try to come up with ways to encourage more people Vanessa Pierce, Financial Secretary to be involved and actively engaged than the 20% who currently are. It’s rare to [email protected] ever get much above 25-30% in any parish, but the more engaged all of us are, Mary Schrantz, Advancement Director the more we can do. I will give you some examples of things that have happened [email protected] recently that originated with parishioners (rather than from me or the staff). • Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales
CATHOLIC BISHOPS’ CONFERENCE Mass of Welcome Cardinal Vincent Nichols’ Homily westminster cathedral, 28 february 2014 Thank you, all, very much, for coming to this Mass of Welcome. You have certainly made me feel just that - most welcome and wonderfully supported by your prayers and good will. In return may I say a little about the marvellous events in Rome over last weekend. The public Consistory last Saturday was a moment of such exuberance. I enjoyed it thoroughly. And I also learned, immediately, the deep esteem and respect in which Cardinals are held. Salutes all around; a sharp clicking of heels from the Swiss Guards; freedom to wander anywhere within the Basilica of St Peter’s; endless smiles and joyful greetings! So I was able to make my way over to greet our own Cathedral Choir, singing alongside the Sistine Choir. What a special moment. Then, next day, our choir met Pope Francis personally and gave him a brief impromptu concert. He readily expressed his thanks and admiration. The choir sang on two occasions: the public Consistory on Saturday, when the 19 new cardinals were created, through the imposition of the red biretta and the giving of a ring, and the solemn celebration of Mass with the Holy Father on Sunday. I experienced these two emotional events as a real deepening of our bonds with the Holy Father, the successor of St Peter, around whose tomb we were actually gathered. They were also moments of infectious joy, shared, I believe, by all present. On the following day, Monday, we went to the tomb of St Paul, in the great Basilica just outside the walls of Rome.

The Catholic Church in the Czech Republic Dear Readers, The publication on the Ro- man Catholic Church which you are holding in your hands may strike you as history that belongs in a museum. How- ever, if you leaf through it and look around our beauti- ful country, you may discover that it belongs to the present as well. Many changes have taken place. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. Ecumenical cooperation, which was strengthened by decades of persecution and bullying of the Church, is flourishing remarkably in this country.

  • An Introduction to the Theme of World Meeting of Families 2018 Pastoral
An Introduction to the Theme of World Meeting of Families 2018 The theme for each World Meeting of Families is chosen by the Pope. In choosing The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World, as the theme for the ninth World Meeting of Families in Dublin, Ireland, Pope Francis invites us to reflect on a theme that was central to the Synodal process that led to his post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia: On Love in the Family. ‘The Church and The Gospel of the Family’ was a key theme in the Preparatory Document for the III Extraordinary Assembly of Bishops in October 2014, a document that was the subject of unprecedented consultation among the faithful of the Church across the world. While the preparatory document does not give a specific definition of the term, ‘The Gospel of the Family’, it does convey at least three senses in which this relatively new phrase in the Church’s tradition can be understood: • The family, founded on the marriage of a man and woman, is part of God’s plan from the beginning. The ‘Good News’ of the family is therefore an indispensable part of the joyful message of the Gospel that the Church proclaims. • The family is the principal agent of evangelisation of its own members. As the first school of faith and love, the Christian family is often where we ourselves first come to know Jesus and his love. • The family proclaims the Gospel to the World. The Christian family, by its witness to the life and love of Jesus, is a principal agent of evangelisation to the world.

  • SUMMER MUSINGS (FROM the CONSORTIUM) (Part Seven) (Final Part)
SUMMER MUSINGS (FROM THE CONSORTIUM) (Part Seven) (Final Part) My sisters and brothers in the Risen Lord, greetings to you in the Holy Spirit of the Risen One! I hope your summer went well in the Lord and if you are still in that mode, that it continues to go well for you! This is the last issue in our series, Summer Musings. The Consortium had to publish something over this summer because so much kept happening over the summer. Pope Francis really did not take any real holiday at this time because he is driven to accomplish what God is asking him to do: he has been gently chastised for not taking a real holiday but it is understandable that at his age (80 years) he has a lot to do before he dies. He also desires very much to establish the new Church before his death to such an extent that It will not be easily overturned by others when he does die; this probably is part of his mission in the Spirit. September still technically is part of summer until the first Fall/Autumn day which this year begins on September 22 (2016). And for some people summer-time still continues into September – not for many of us but for some fortunate ones! On this score, this edition can still be titled Summer Musings because practically all the research and writing and editing was done before September 22! Hence technically we can still call this issue a summer issue! I know I am rationalizing quite a bit here and stretching a bit but it does serve my purpose.

  • Cardinal Vincent Nichols' Personal Statement on Safeguarding
Cardinal Vincent Nichols’ Personal Statement on Safeguarding Friday, November 20th, 2020 Immediately preceding a virtual press conference on Safeguarding in the Catholic Church in England and Wales, Bishops’ Conference President, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, read out a personal statement. Full Text On Tuesday 10 November, I received the IICSA Report. It has brought together a picture of abuse inflicted in the Catholic Church over a period of 50 years, together with detailed accounts of that abuse. It is a terrible picture. I remain shocked and ashamed. It is a reality that hangs like a dark cloud over my heart and mind. I know that the publication of the Report has renewed in so many the lasting pain and wounds they carry as a result of that abuse, no matter how long ago it happened. My first thoughts were and are for them. Indeed many have written to me in these last days. To each and every one, I express my profound sorrow and apologies. Abuse is a terrible wickedness. It can destroy, or severely damage, a person’s capacity for trust and love. It can create of a life an empty shell. One letter I received from a survivor speaks eloquently of its deepest wickedness. She writes that, in the eyes of faith, these are wounds inflicted on the very Body of Jesus Christ, and inflicted by a person who claims to represent Christ and who uses faith, that most precious gift, as a means of controlling their victim. It is a very terrible evil. I have spent many hours listening to survivors.
