2 2016 Record Book Stephanie Hughes Head Coach - Fourth Season Texas State (2001)

The 2016 season will mark Stephanie Hughes’ fifth year as head coach for the Islanders softball program.

Hughes, a native of Angleton, Texas, led the 2015 Islanders team to their first 20-win season since the 2011 season and the squad also advanced to the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time since 2012. The team won six conference series victories during the season and concluded the regular season winning five straight, including seven of their last nine games.

Hughes, a native of Angleton, Texas, arrived to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi after spending eight years as part of the UTSA coaching staff, including the 2011 season as the interim head coach. Prior to that, she spent seven seasons as an assistant for the Roadrunners.

During Hughes’ time as an assistant with the Roadrunners, she helped UTSA to three Southland Conference regular-season championships, including Prior to joining the Roadrunners’ staff, Hughes two tournament titles and two NCAA regional served as an assistant for Navarro College and guided appearances. In January 2011, Hughes was named the team to two conference titles. As an assistant she the interim head coach for UTSA and led the team helped with all aspects of day-to-day operations, to a 28-27 record, improving the Roadrunners’ win including teaching academic classes, recruiting, total by five games from the year before. coordinating travel plans and overseeing the student- athletes’ academic progress. Hughes began her coaching career in 2001 at Texas State as an assistant coach after competing four years As a four-year letterwinner on the Bobcat squad, for the Bobcats. During her one-year tenure, she Hughes was a two-time Southland Tournament helped the 2002 squad to a 37-22 record, including a Champion, in 1998 and 2001, also garnering a regular 23-4 finish in the Southland to seal the team’s second season Southland Conference title as a senior. She straight regular season conference title. earned a first team All-Southland Conference nod in 2001, leading her team to the NCAA Regional Finals that year. Hughes received her bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in December 2001 from Texas State. 3 2016 Record Book Keith Stein Assistant Coach - First Season Sam Houston State (2012)

Keith Stein was named an assistant coach for the Islanders’ softball program in November of 2013.

Stein, a native of College Station, Texas, arrived to the Island University after spending the 2012-13 season as a volunteer assistant coach for UTSA. Prior to that, he served as a volunteer softball coach for Texas A&M University and Southland foe Sam Houston State.

Stein, a former professional baseball player for the Detroit Tigers, was a two-year member of the Bearkats baseball program. Prior to that, he played two seasons for the Aggies. While at Sam Houston State, he earned first team all-conference honors in 2008 and second team all-conference accolades in 2007. Stein set Southland Conference records for most hits in a season in 2007 and led the Bearkats’ career batting average leader. During his time in Huntsville, Stein was named to the all-conference tournament team each of his years.

Stein’s success as a collegiate player, led him to being drafted in the 29th round of the 2008 MLB draft by the Tigers. He was the first player in the draft class to be promoted to higher league level and was one of 40 players in the Tigers organization to be invited to play in fall Instructions. Stein retired in 2009 after a career-ending injury during spring training.

At UTSA, Stein worked primarily with the outfielders and helped establish a habitual mental toughness to help keep a positive attitude throughout the season. While at Texas A&M, Stein shadowed head coach Jo Evans, and gained a better understanding of softball tendencies and the differences between the two sports. Stein also spent his time at Sam Houston State, working with the outfielders and worked closely with head coach Bob Brock.

4 2016 Record Book Brittany Rumfelt Pitching Coach - First Season Oregon (2011)

Brittany Rumfelt came to the Island in 2015 and serves as the pitching coach for the program. Rumfelt served as the high performance and development manager for Softball Western Australia from October 2011 through December 2014. In that role, she designed and delivered 1- to 9-day camps and clinics for players aged 8-24. She also developed and ran strength and conditioning programs for State and National players. During her time in Australia, she also served as an individualized pitching and hitting coach, teaching athletes the mental aspect of the sport in addition to physical skills. She also played a key role in the development of Alicia Forte as an Australian National Team and Kate Nolan as a pitcher for the Western Australia state team. She also served as an assistant coach for the Under-17 and Under-19 Western Australia teams. Rumfelt also had a strong career as a player, helping the University of Oregon to a pair of Super Regional appearances (2010, 2011) in her four years with the Ducks. She ranked in the top-5 of the Pac-10 in saves, appearances and games finished during the 2010 season, and then in 2011 earned honorable mention in the Pac-10 Year in Review. She played a role in the rebuilding of the UO program, helping the team go from 176th in the nation to 16th in just one year.

2015 ( JUNIOR): Started in 18 games and made 19 appearances in the Islanders’ circle … finished with a 5-8 record while posting a 3.29 ERA … allowed 108 hits and 68 runs, 51 of them earned, while walking 60 batters and striking out 70 batters in 108.2 innings … delivered three shutouts during the season … recorded a season-best 10 against South Dakota (2/14/15) … pitched a season-high 7.1 innings against Texas State (4/22/15).
