Recently, rRNA gene phylogenetic analyses of two atypical parasitic fungi with amoeboid zoospores and long kinetosomes, the sanchytrids Amoeboradix gromovi and San- chytrium tribonematis, showed that they formed a monophyletic group without close affinity with known fungal clades. Here, we sequence single-cell genomes for both species to assess their phylogenetic position and evolution. Phylogenomic analyses using different protein datasets and a comprehensive taxon sampling result in an almost fully-resolved fungal tree, with Chytridiomycota as sister to all other fungi, and sanchytrids forming a well-supported, fast-evolving clade sister to Blastocladiomycota. Comparative genomic analyses across fungi and their allies (Holomycota) reveal an atypically reduced metabolic repertoire for sanchy- trids. We infer three main independent flagellum losses from the distribution of over 60 flagellum-specific proteins across Holomycota. Based on sanchytrids’ phylogenetic position and unique traits, we propose the designation of a novel phylum, Sanchytriomycota. Trichomycetes from Lentic and Lotic Aquatic Habitats in Ontario, Canada
1449 Trichomycetes from lentic and lotic aquatic habitats in Ontario, Canada D.B. Strongman and Merlin M. White Abstract: Fungi and protists make up an ecological group, trichomycetes, that inhabit the guts of invertebrates, mostly aquatic insects. Trichomycetes are reported herein from arthropods collected in lotic habitats (fast flowing streams) and lentic environments (ponds, ditches, seeps, and lakes) from 11 sites in Algonquin Park and 6 other sites in Ontario, Can- ada. Thirty-two trichomycete species were recovered, including 7 new species: Legeriomyces algonquinensis, Legeriosi- milis leptocerci, Legeriosimilis whitneyi, and Paramoebidium umbonatum are described from mayfly nymphs (Ephemeroptera); Pennella digitata and Glotzia incilis from black fly and midge larvae (Diptera), respectively; and Arun- dinula opeongoensis from a crayfish (Crustacea). Legeriomyces rarus Lichtw. & M.C. Williams and Stachylina penetralis Lichtw. are new North American records, and seven species are documented for the first time in Canada. More common and widely distributed trichomycete species such as Harpella melusinae Le´ger & Duboscq and Smittium culicis Manier, were also recovered. Most previous studies on trichomycetes have been done primarily in lotic environments but clearly lentic systems (e.g., ponds and lakes) harbour diverse arthropod communities and further exploration of these habitats will continue to increase our knowledge of trichomycete diversity. Assessing the Potential Effects of Fungicides on Nontarget Gut Fungi (Trichomycetes) and Their Associated Larval Black Fly Hosts1

White2 ABSTRACT: Fungicides are moderately hydrophobic and have been detected in water and sediment, particularly in agricultural watersheds, but typically are not included in routine water quality monitoring efforts. This is despite their widespread use and frequent application to combat fungal pathogens. Although the efficacy of these compounds on fungal pathogens is well documented, little is known about their effects on nontarget fungi. This pilot study, a field survey in southwestern Idaho from April to December 2010 on four streams with varying pesti- cide inputs (two agricultural and two reference sites), was conducted to assess nontarget impact of fungicides on gut fungi, or trichomycetes. Tissues of larval black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae), hosts of gut fungi, were analyzed for pesticide accumulation. Fungicides were detected in hosts from streams within agricultural watersheds but were not detected in hosts from reference streams. Gut fungi from agricultural sites exhibited decreased percent infes- tation, density and sporulation within the gut, and black fly tissues had elevated pesticide concentrations. Differ- ences observed between the sites demonstrate a potential effect on this symbiotic system. Future research is needed to parse out the details of the complex biotic and abiotic relationships; however, these preliminary results indicate that impacts to nontarget organisms could have far-reaching consequences within aquatic ecosystems. -

Larvas de Culicidae e os fungos Trichomycetes associados foram coletados no município de Manaus, AM; amostras de criadouros incluindo plantas (habitat natural) e reservatórios antrópicos (habitat artificial). O total de 1518 larvas foi coletado, 913 em criadouros naturais e 605 em criadouros artificiais, distribuídas em 12 espécies de sete gêneros. O total de 661 indivíduos (4o estádio) foi dissecado para verificar a presença de fungos Trichomycetes no intestino médio e posterior. Infecção de fungos Trichomycetes no intestino posterior foram observados em 15% de Culex urichii Coquillett, 13% de Culex (Culex) sp1, 9% of Limatus spp., 49% de Aedes aegypti Linnaeus e 1% de Ochlerotatus argyrothorax Bonne-Wepster & Bonne. -

Abstract: Trichomycetes infecting freshwater Ephemeroptera and Díptera (Siínuliidae, Chironomidae) in various life zones oC Cósta Rica were studied. Insect populations in 36 streams were sampled, a few repeatedly, at four different . perlods of time over seven years. Eleven new species of Harpellales are reported, plus six species knownto occur also in nontropical parts oí the world. Included are new species of Harpella and Pennella, a new monotypic genus (GraminelloidesJ, and four new species of the previously monotypic genera Spartiella and Genistellospora. Seven new Smittiúm species, including three that are not named at this time, were cultured axenically. A new Amoebidium (Amoebidiales) was found in a stream polluted with organic matter. In the same polluted stream more species of dipteran larvae and a greater number of gut fungi were present than in stretclies of unpolluted water upstream. The overall diversity of Harpellales and their aquatic insect hosts in most Costa Rican streams appeared to be lower than what the author has found in many lotic habitats in more northem and southem regions of the world, and thus this orderof fungi may be an exception to the 'latitudinal species diversity gradient' concept as it applies to many other tropical organisms. A key to all 23 Trichomycetes now known to be present in Costa Rica is provided. Keywords: Aquatic insects. -

Studies of mosquito behaviors in zoos will lead to a better understanding, both within and outside zoos, of disease transmission routes and mosquito biology. To investigate whether the unique assemblage of habitats in zoos affects mosquito behavior, I sampled larvae and adults in the Greenville Zoo and the Riverbanks Zoo, South Carolina, USA, from March 2008 to January 2011. The objectives of my study were to investigate mosquito oviposition behavior, blood-host usage, and transmission of the causative agent of dog heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis); document the structure of the mosquito pyloric armature; and provide zoos with suggestions for mosquito control. -
