Filey Town Guide 2020/21 Branching Out Branching Out is a community group set up for people who want to make new friends or are feeling isolated and alone. We support each other with issues like anxiety, depression and grief, drawing from our own experiences.

We meet at the Co-Op Community room on a Thursday 1.00-3.00 pm where we participate in craft activities and skill sharing. The group has a Facebook page that shows what we have done to date and information on what events are coming up.

Our aim is to make friends and have fun in a safe and friendly environment and we have been fortunate to have received funding from Tesco, thanks to our community supporting us with the blue tokens. The group has also received funding from other local community groups through Table Top sales and Filey Bay Today. This support has helped us start out and we continue to grow a year on.

Throughout the year we organise activities and trips to various places of interest.

The group is always looking for new members to join us and for people who would like to teach us new skills. We have held many workshops; knitting, acrylic drip art, photography, art therapy, Branching Christmas crafts and a history of Filey workshop Out to name a few.

67 Filey Town Guide 2020/21 Poetry by Students from Ebor Academy Filey Filey My Town Sat on the beautiful beach; Sun shining down, Green trees wave in the gentle breeze, Rolling seas and skyscraper ice creams, Eating fish and chips while the seagulls screech, Filey is a lovely town. Sat on your favourite bench; Watching the world around you, Leaves on the ground and conkers conquering, Children playing at country carpark, Halloween creeping up, Filey is my favourite town. Standing in the cold snow; Watching children make snowmen, Tree’s all bare and waving in the wind, Each footstep crunching as you’re walking along the Brigg, Christmas day, yet to come, Filey is my town. Sat on the green grass; Watching as the sheep like clouds drift by, Tree’s full of blossom and flowers ruling the ground, Sun and rain heals all dead plants, Easter is hopping by, This is Filey my town. By Sophie Gates, Year 7

Filey By the beach I can see the glistening sea And the golden sand I lay on the sand like it was my bed The birds Swoop over my head I sit up and I can hear Squawking seagulls In my country the sun is always out People are always by the sea This is my country. By Ben Musk, Year 7

68 Filey Town Guide 2020/21 by Students from Ebor Academy Filey Poem about Filey The sound of waves crashing on the shore, Sounded like someone constantly pounding fists against a wooden door. The cries of the seagulls welcome me home, They flap their wings until they get known. The golden, soft sand gets everywhere, Between your toes and in your ears. The scent of the salt and vinegar, Makes up the fish and chips for your dinner. Pushing the silver, copper coins into the slot machine, Makes up the enjoyment at the amusements. Waves overlap your feet, As you look way out to sea. By Sophie Addison, Year 8

Filey Beach A sweet scent of salt lingers in the air The sand under my feet warm from the summer sun The seagulls above me alive and free Swoop down to take a glimpse of me Kids in the sea Sunbathing city Come get a tan The wonderful sun blazing with heat Sun cream thick and gloopy covers my face The scent of barbecue tingles my senses My stomach rumbles ready to eat While the music plays I dance with my feet . Night has come The chilly breeze The party animals up and awake As I sleep in my cosy warm bed. By Anya Chaudhary, Year 8
