Jack Bremer, SPY Team Captain
Name: Jack Bremer High School: Severn School Years on SPY: 13 College attending in Fall 2012: Cornell University Hobbies when not swimming: Green Bay Packers – I’ve been a huge fan my whole life, and now I can finally admit: Jim and Crystee, all those times I scratched Winterfest finals, I didn’t have a “stomach bug” or “so much homework,” I was just watching the Packers game. Other than that, I enjoy anything with boats, cars, Washington Capitals. Also (although my mom despises me doing this) I cannot stop eating pizza or cheez-its; I go through a box of each in about 10-20 minutes. Most memorable swim: Undoubtedly 200 Fly at SC Y-Nationals Finals my sophomore year. My lone goal of the meet was to make my first Summer Juniors cut, and 200 Fly was my last chance. I went a 1:52.94 and placed 16th in the morning, but I needed to go 1:51.99. At finals I won the B Final with a 1:50.34 and out-touched 2nd place by 0.02. I don’t think I’ve ever been more pumped up for anything in my life than that swim at finals, and I still get goose bumps thinking about it. Most memorable/funny moment: After spending nearly my whole life on the team, I’ve accumulated quite a few, so I can’t pick just one moment. I’d mainly like to mention the people on SPY who have impacted my life in memorable ways and have given friendships that will last a lifetime. -

Kant, Mission Command, and What It Means to Take
OPERATIONALIZING A PEOPLE-FIRST STRATEGY: KANT, MISSION COMMAND, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY IN A 21ST CENTURY MILITARY A Thesis by JON GENE THOMPSON, JR. Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Chair of Committee, Kristi Sweet Committee Members, Theodore George Marian Eide Head of Department, Theodore George May 2021 Major Subject: Philosophy Copyright 2021 Jon Gene Thompson, Jr. ABSTRACT The purpose of this thesis is to argue for the adoption of Mission Command because it stands to promote the kind of functioning proper to the aims and conditions of the increasingly tech-enabled military. It does this because there are no mission, battle, or war conditions where good judgment and responsible action are not critical to the success of the military’s endeavors. In this, there is a moral basis to the proper functioning of a good military – trust and responsibility taking. While some argue that implementing Mission Command is infeasible, I argue that Kant, in fact, provides a model of moral education that suits Mission Command’s integration quite well. I turn to Kant because he is the thinker for whom responsibility is the key concept, so his thoughts on how to cultivate it are relevant to the successful integration of Mission Command. In order to support my argument for Mission Command, I first focus the thesis on the ethical debates of autonomous weapons systems (AWS), specifically, drones. In finding the literature too narrow, I argue the ethical discussion must be recast in terms of judgment, autonomy, and responsibility in order to locate a balanced path forward for the ethical research and development of technology that privileges the centrality of the human agent. -

One day during my long recovery, a friend of mine brought me a book. It was The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac. When I finally got better we talked about it, and for the first time I heard about the Beats. Back then my friend had a hard time defining who they were and my understanding did not come that evening – it came gradually through frequenting Wirströms, the wonderful jazz bar where the musicians made „IT‟ happen every week during the Tuesday jam session, through a lot of walking and talking in the everchanging everlasting woods, through travelling by myself, with my backpack as my only companion. Gradually it came - till the day the friend who had given me the book sent me a letter. When I read it, I knew I understood; 4 Monday, March 6, 2006, 4:53 AM last night i meet a old man(60 i think) spanish man in that party where i invite you... -
Big Sur for Other Uses, See Big Sur (Disambiguation)
www.caseylucius.com [email protected] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page Big Sur For other uses, see Big Sur (disambiguation). Big Sur is a lightly populated region of the Central Coast of California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise abruptly from the Pacific Ocean. Although it has no specific boundaries, many definitions of the area include the 90 miles (140 km) of coastline from the Carmel River in Monterey County south to the San Carpoforo Creek in San Luis Obispo County,[1][2] and extend about 20 miles (30 km) inland to the eastern foothills of the Santa Lucias. Other sources limit the eastern border to the coastal flanks of these mountains, only 3 to 12 miles (5 to 19 km) inland. Another practical definition of the region is the segment of California State Route 1 from Carmel south to San Simeon. The northern end of Big Sur is about 120 miles (190 km) south of San Francisco, and the southern end is approximately 245 miles (394 km) northwest of Los Angeles. The name "Big Sur" is derived from the original Spanish-language "el sur grande", meaning "the big south", or from "el país grande del sur", "the big country of the south". This name refers to its location south of the city of Monterey.[3] The terrain offers stunning views, making Big Sur a popular tourist destination. Big Sur's Cone Peak is the highest coastal mountain in the contiguous 48 states, ascending nearly a mile (5,155 feet/1571 m) above sea level, only 3 miles (5 km) from the ocean.[4] The name Big Sur can also specifically refer to any of the small settlements in the region, including Posts, Lucia and Gorda; mail sent to most areas within the region must be addressed "Big Sur".[5] It also holds thousands of marathons each year. -
The Impact of Allen Ginsberg's Howl on American Counterculture
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Croatian Digital Thesis Repository UNIVERSITY OF RIJEKA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Vlatka Makovec The Impact of Allen Ginsberg’s Howl on American Counterculture Representatives: Bob Dylan and Patti Smith Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the M.A.in English Language and Literature and Italian language and literature at the University of Rijeka Supervisor: Sintija Čuljat, PhD Co-supervisor: Carlo Martinez, PhD Rijeka, July 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis sets out to explore the influence exerted by Allen Ginsberg’s poem Howl on the poetics of Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. In particular, it will elaborate how some elements of Howl, be it the form or the theme, can be found in lyrics of Bob Dylan’s and Patti Smith’s songs. Along with Jack Kerouac’s On the Road and William Seward Burroughs’ Naked Lunch, Ginsberg’s poem is considered as one of the seminal texts of the Beat generation. Their works exemplify the same traits, such as the rejection of the standard narrative values and materialism, explicit descriptions of the human condition, the pursuit of happiness and peace through the use of drugs, sexual liberation and the study of Eastern religions. All the aforementioned works were clearly ahead of their time which got them labeled as inappropriate. Moreover, after their publications, Naked Lunch and Howl had to stand trials because they were deemed obscene. Like most of the works written by the beat writers, with its descriptions Howl was pushing the boundaries of freedom of expression and paved the path to its successors who continued to explore the themes elaborated in Howl. -
