When a panicked Benedictine nun appears at the clinic begging Mathilde to follow her back to the convent, what she finds there is shocking: a holy sister about to give birth and several more in advanced stages of pregnancy. A non-believer, Mathilde enters the sisters’ fiercely private world, dictated by the rituals of their order and the strict Rev. Mother (Agata Kulesza, Ida). Fearing the shame of exposure, the hostility of the occupying Soviet troops and local Polish communists and while facing an unprecedented crisis of faith, the nuns increasingly turn to Mathilde as their beliefs and traditions clash with harsh realities. -

Fashion in an Age of Technology
MANUS X MACHINA: FASHION IN AN AGE OF TECHNOLOGY INTRODUCTION The traditional distinction between the haute couture and prêt-à-porter has always been between the custom-made and the ready-made. Haute couture clothes are singular models fitted to the body of a specific individual, while prêt-à-porter garments are produced in multiples for the mass market in standard sizes to fit many body types. Implicit in this difference is the assumption that the handwork techniques involved in the haute couture are superior to the mechanized methods of prêt-à-porter. Over the years, however, each discipline has regularly embraced the practices of the other. Despite the fact that this mutual exchange continues to accelerate, the dichotomy between the hand (manus) and the machine (machina) still characterizes the production processes of the haute couture and prêt-à-porter in the twenty-first century. Instead of presenting the handmade and the machine-made as oppositional, this exhibition suggests a spectrum or continuum of practice, whereby the hand and the machine are equal and mutual protagonists in solving design problems, enhancing design practices, and, ultimately, advancing the future of fashion. It prompts a rethinking of the institutions of the haute couture and prêt-à-porter, especially as the technical separations between the two grow increasingly ambiguous and the quality of designer prêt-à-porter more refined. At the same time, the exhibition questions the cultural and symbolic meanings of the hand-machine dichotomy. Typically, the hand has been identified with exclusivity and individuality as well as with elitism and the cult of personality. -

He has escaped a little village in the countryside. He has escaped his family, his father's tyranny and his mother's resignation. He has escaped intolerance, rejection and the bullying he suffered from being singled out as "different." Against all odds, he has found allies. First Madeleine Clement, the middle school principal who introduced him to theater and whose name he will later adopt as a symbol of his salvation. Then Abel Pinto, his mentor and role model, who will encourage him to tell his story on stage. Finally, Isabelle Huppert will help him get his show produced and bring it to life. Marvin/Martin will risk everything to create this show that represents so much more than success: it is his path to re-invention. INTERVIEW WITH ANNE FONTAINE © Marcel Hartmann Though "Marvin" was inspired by "The End of Eddy" by Edouard Louis, your Marvin is not an adaptation of that book. Tell us how the film was born. I felt a very strong connection to the hero of the book by Edouard Louis, and I almost immediately felt like I wanted to make his story my own. -

The Box Office Performance of European Films in the UK
The box office performance of European films in the UK Huw David Jones University of York, UK Abstract European films accounted for 17.4% of UK cinema releases in the period 2002-14, but only 1.8% of the gross box office. Drawing on box office data, audience surveys and interviews with industry players, this article argues that European films generally perform badly in the UK box office because they suffer from a heavy 'cultural discount' and structural weaknesses at the level of production and distribution. Those European films which do 'breakout' are either English-language films with qualities designed to appeal to a mainstream British audience (e.g. stars and special effects) or foreign language films with cultural elements (e.g. well-known story, director, genre, subject matter or source material) which many British cinemagoers are already familiar with. Breakout European films are also mainly released by Hollywood studios or major independent distributors. These findings provide insights into academic and policy debates about the transnational circulation of film and other media products. Introduction Britain’s historic decision to leave the European Union (EU) in the referendum on 23 June 2016 took many political commentators, pollsters and members of the public by surprise. Yet if we see engagement with European film as a broader indicator of pro- European sentiment, then perhaps the result is less surprising.1 According to the UK Film Council (UKFC)/British Film Institute’s (BFI) Statistical Yearbooks (2003-14), European films averaged 17.4% of UK cinema releases in the period 2002-14, but accounted for only 1.8% of the gross box office (figure 1) – the lowest market share for European films in the EU28 (MEDIA Salles 2012).
