The Working Group turned to WilmerHale after the firm offered its assistance following George Floyd’s death, because of its deep experience in both police reform and civil rights issues

Shortly after the killing of Mr. Floyd, the Conference convened the Working Group on Police Reform and Racial Justice, led by , and including the mayors of Cincinnati and Tampa; the police chiefs of Phoenix, AZ; , MD; Columbia, SC, and various police experts.

WilmerHale assisted the Working Group in developing a detailed extensive blueprint for police reform and equal justice in America’s cities. The blueprint was adopted unanimously by the Conference.

The Working Group’s Chair Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot described the WilmerHale team as “invaluable”.

Danielle Conley • Danielle served as the Associate Deputy Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, where among other things she managed high-profile civil rights litigation and enforcement matters, including policing cases. • In particular, while serving as Associate Deputy Attorney General, Danielle worked closely with other senior DOJ officials to develop the Department’s response protocol for

officer-involved shootings, and to implement strategies to carry out the Department’s community policing mission. John Walsh • John previously served as the U.S. Attorney for Colorado from 2010-2016. • As U.S. Attorney, John worked extensively with DOJ’s Community Oriented Policing Services (“COPS”) office. From 2015 to 2016, he served as the Chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee of U.S. Attorneys and helped lead federal sentencing reform efforts with Department leaders and President Obama. • John also has significant experience in civilian oversight of law enforcement, having served as Vice Chair of the Public Safety Review Commission (a civilian oversight board) from 2003 to 2005. • John recently led an independent review of the Aurora Police Department in Colorado. Brent Gurney • Brent is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland and was appointed Deputy Chief for the Southern Division. • Brent has worked on major police reform investigations and consent decrees in Baltimore, Chicago and Puerto Rico. • Brent is a part of the team that is counsel to the U.S. Conference of Mayors Working Group on Police Reform and Racial Justice.
