Video, sponsored by Taylor Made. The morning after New Year=s Eve perhaps isn=t the wisest or safest time to start quoting statistics, but the decisive victory of Downthedustyroad prompts a few. Unless I=m mistaken, her sire Storm and a Half is no less than the 31st son of Storm Cat to have sired a group/graded winner in one of the major racing coun- tries in the northern hemisphere. However, Storm and a Half has the distinction of being the first unraced son of Storm Cat to have sired a graded winner. This rather surprised me, given the large number of Storm Cat colts who have been given their chance as stallions (the latest Blood-Horse Stallion Register lists more than 110 sons). Storm and a Half is also the only non-stakes winner among the 13 sons of Storm Cat to have sired a Grade I winner. That said, Storm and a Half isn=t the first non-stakes- winning son of Storm Cat to have drawn attention to himself. Storm Boot has carved out a niche as an inex- pensive yet reliable sire of stakes winners, while the once-raced Quick Cut, the minor winner Level Sands and the non-winning Tiger Ridge have each sired a graded winner. Bearing in mind the number of unraced or modestly performed fillies who make excellent broodmares, one might have expected more stallions like Storm and a Half to come through. The downtrodden male is at a big disadvantage, though. Whereas an unraced broodmare can have access to the finest stallions, provided her owner is prepared to pay the price, an unraced stallion is almost inevitably going to struggle to attract mares either in sufficient numbers or of suffi- cient quality. In the past, potential stallions with more pedigree than performance used to be very attractive to southern hemisphere breeders who couldn=t afford to buy pedigree and performance, but the emergence of the shuttle stallion has probably denied these horses even that slim chance of fulfilling the promise of their bloodlines. TOWERING ESCAPE (f, 4, Giant=s Causeway-- Rapunzell {MSP, $146,133}, by Miswaki) had shown an affinity for the mud in the past, romping by 21 3/4 lengths in a state-bred allowance test at Belmont in July. Third in the Sept. 4 New York Oaks at Finger Lakes, she switched to the turf for the Sept. 27 Irish Actress S. at Belmont and faded to sixth. The chestnut got back on track with a front-running score in an off- the-turf allowance for New York-breds Oct. 18 and made it two in a row in an optional claimer facing open company at the Big A Nov. 22. The 3-2 chalk to keep the streak alive, she went right to the front and opened up late to beat Love Strikes (Smart Strike) by 3 1/4 lengths. Lifetime Record: SP, 12-5-1-3, $162,620. The slight choice to celebrate her third birthday with a stakes victory, she rated off the pace early and was trapped on the hedge on the far turn. The bay filly managed to extricate herself as they straightened for home Jim Lisa Photo and rallied down the lane for a half-length success. AShe showed a lot of guts and class because we got a little bottled up when I wanted to go, and she just forced her way through,@ jockey Kent Desormeaux explained.
