    Annex 2: Additional Copy of Section B “Geological Heritage” of the Application Section B “Geological Heritage” GEOLOGICAL SUMMARY The Azores Archipelago is located in the North Atlantic, on the triple junction between the North American, Eurasian and African-Nubian plates. Volcanic and tectonic activities are well displayed in the geomorphology of the islands; the former includes 26 eruptions since the settlement, in early 15th century. The Azores Islands are formed by 16 major polygenetic volcanoes, most of them silicic and with summit subsidence calderas: nine of them are still active. Moreover, there are about 1750 monogenetic volcanoes in the archipelago, either dispersed along the flanks and inside the summit depression of the polygenetic volcanoes, either belonging to the 11 basaltic fissural volcanic systems located in different islands. These monogenetic centres include domes and coulées, tuff rings, tuff cones, maars, scoria and spatter cones, and eruptive fissures that together with other volcanic, tectonic, sedimentary, littoral and deep sea features may be considered as geosites and can embrace outstanding landscapes. B – Geological Heritage B1. Location of the proposed Geopark The Azores archipelago is located in the Atlantic Ocean, between the latitudes 36º56’ e 39º44’ North and the longitudes 24º47’ and 31º16’ West (Figure 5), and at the distance of 1815 km from the Mainland Portugal. ´ Figure 6 – General geodynamic framework of the Azores archipelago. From a geological point of view, all the Azores islands are of volcanic origin and are oceanic islands that emerged from the surrounding seafloor due to the progressively piled up of submarine volcanic products, a process that should have started about 36 million years (M.y.).

    E1 Arquipelago dos Açores Imray-Iolaire CHARTS FOR THE ATLANTIC OCEAN ABOUT THIS CHART Compiled by DM Street Jnr DM Street Jr, the well known yachting author, has been working with Imray to compile the Imray-Iolaire charts of the eastern Caribbean since 1979. In 1989, after 9 Translatlantic voyages aboard the 46’ englineless yawl, Iolaire , which he owned for 53 years, he began compiling the Imray-Iolaire charts to the Atlantic Islands . His knowledge of the Azores has been gathered over a 35 year period. He explored the Azores aboard Iolaire in 1985, 1989 and 2005. In 2002 he visited some of the islands on the 48’ ketch Nimrod , and travelled by air and ferry to others in the group. In 2009, courtesy of the Azorean harbour department and tourist office, Street spent two weeks visiting and exploring all the islands by air and ferry. Carla Cook’s help in obtaining the latest information on marinas and harbours has been IMPORTANT tremendous and Bob Siverman’s 1981 Cruising Guide to the Azores has been used For the latest chart extensively, with his permission, in the preparation of these notes. The author and publishers believe that this chart is the most accurate and up to date corrections visit available of the area it covers. It can, however, only remain so if mariners notify the www.imray.com publishers of any inaccuracy or need for correction of which they may be aware. Street’s Caribbean Guides cover sailing from the western end of Puerto Rico, east and south through the islands to Trinidad, then west along the Venezuelan coast and The information shown on charts is offshore islands to Aruba.

    Exmo. Senhor Vasco Alves Cordeiro, É com grande preocupação que nós, os signatários nacionais e internacionais desta carta aberta, que lhe é dirigida na sua função de Presidente do Governo Regional dos Açores, observamos uma evolução inquietante nos Açores e nas suas águas territoriais (ZEEA, Zona Económica Exclusiva dos Açores). No ecossistema do Atlântico, os Açores têm uma importância fundamental para a natureza e os seus seres vivos, tanto debaixo como acima da água. A conservação deste singular ecossistema central é uma tarefa crucial para a humanidade. A destruição deste sistema pode ter consequências graves para os seres humanos, não só nos Açores. Por consideração pelas gerações vindouras e por consideração pelo tratamento sustentável transgeracional da natureza dos Açores, gostávamos de lhe apelar a mudar fundamentalmente a sua política no domínio da proteção ambiental e marítima. Há muitos anos que, juntamente com peritos, o Governo Regional e diversas administrações das nove ilhas estabeleceram zonas de proteção marítima e reservas naturais no mar à volta dos Açores e também diretamente nas ilhas, pelo menos teoricamente. Desde 08.07.2008 estão legislados Parques Naturais de Ilha, para cada uma das Ilhas dos Açores (1). No entanto, para que serve o estabelecimento de zonas de proteção marítima se estas leis excluem espécies pelágicas, como o tubarão, o espadarte e o atum, o isco vivo, e se se continua a autorizar que embarcações de pesca permaneçam, e até desenvolvam atividades extrativas nas zonas a que chamam Reservas? Se não se trava a pesca ilegal na prática, se as zonas de proteção marítima não são respeitadas e, apesar de muitas indicações, participações e solicitações no sentido de mudar isso, continuarem a ser exploradas pelo setor da pesca, teremos certamente o futuro comprometido.

    C Rota de … Ponta Negra GEODIVERSIDADE 39° 40’ 12” N E GEOSSÍTIOS 31° 06’ 53” W ILHA DO CORVO Esta alcantilada ponta rochosa é constituída por basaltos associados ao último episódio eruptivo ocorrido na ilha do Corvo, o qual teve lugar, muito provavelmente, há cerca de 80.000 a 100.000 anos atrás. A escoada lávica associada estende-se por cerca de 1.200 m (segundo uma área elevada de orientação geral NNO-SSE) desde a zona do Pão de Açúcar até ao Alto dos Moinhos, atravessando a fajã lávica da Vila do Corvo e termi- nando na zona costeira da Ponta Negra, segundo arribas rochosas mergu- lhantes e com cerca de 20 m de altura. Ponta Negra is a steep and rocky sea cliff formed by basalts associated with the last eruptive episode that occurred on Corvo Island, most proba- bly about 80,000 to 100,000 years ago. The associated lava flow extends for about 1,200 m (as an elevated area with a general NNW-SSE trend), from the Pão de Açucar zone until the Alto dos Moinhos, crossing the Vila do Corvo lava delta (or lava “fajã”) and ending at the shore at Ponta Negra, as a rocky and plunging sea cliff, about 20 m high. This article presents the architectonic and constructive characterization of housing building features that compose Corvo village’s historical center, focusing on its characteristics, dissonances, and conservation state. A case study regarding one housing building is presented.
