Second Edition.: 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. PICASSO FROM SPAIN TO FRANCE, FROM THE BEGGINING TO THE ENDBy Manoel Mottathe most complete catalogue of Pablo PIcasso work. All kind of material elements, that is to say, painting, watercolors drawings, sculpture, engraivings all kind of styles, all periods, a total Picasso, a global view, more complete than any other catalogue. AND IT IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.. The first edition of this catalogue was published ten years ago, in 2004. This new edition adds works that have come to light since 2004, as well as references to subsequent public sales and exhibitions. This new edition has 404 pages, twenty more than the first edition as well as eight new color plates.Fifty-five of the new works in this edition originated in two sketchbooks from 1970-1971. The first of these is sometimes referred to as the Birthday Sketchbook, since the first work is dated on the master s 89th birthday, October 25, 1970. The last is dated April 26, 1971. The sketchbook contains 27 drawings and was acquired by François Lachenal in Paris. A subsequent owner consigned the whole sketchbook of Christie s, who sold the individual pages in London on June 23, 2005. The second sketchbook is referred to as the Berggruen Album, since it was acquired by the prominent dealer Heinz Berggruen, whose legacy is the Berggruen Museum in Berlin. This sketchbook contained 26 drawings and manuscript dates on the two covers. The whole sketchbook was first published as a facsimile by Berggruen s son John, a dealer in San Francisco, in 2004. An exhibition was held at John Berggruen s gallery in early 2004 on the occasion the publication of the facsimile. The Berggruen heirs then put the sketchbook up for sale at Sotheby s in London, where the individual pages were sold on February 9, 2005.The main exhibition since 2004 focusing on the Picasso s final years was held at the Gagosian Gallery in New York, in the spring of 2009. The catalogue and show were entitled Picasso Mosqueteros and included 52 paintings from 1964-1972 and a selection of etchings from the late 1960s.The last image in the first edition of this catalogue was dated Feb. 21, 1973. A later image, of a musketeer, is now the last known work by Picasso before his death on April 8, 1973. This drawing is dated March 10, 1973 (73-0003). AR204 ART AND INTERPRETATION Art and Aesthetics Module: Art Objects and Experience Fall 2019 Seminar Leader: Geoff Lehman Course Times: Wednesday, 9:00- 10:30 and Friday, 10:45-12:15 (9:00-12:15 for museum visits) Email: [email protected] Office Hours: Tuesdays, 14:00-16:00 Course Description Describing a painting, the art historian Leo Steinberg wrote: “The picture conducts itself the way a vital presence behaves. It creates an encounter.” In this course, we will encounter works of art to explore the specific dialogue each creates with a viewer and the range of interpretive possibilities it offers. More specifically, the course will examine various interpretive approaches to art, including formal analysis, iconography, social and historical contextualism, aestheticism, phenomenology, and psychoanalysis. Most importantly, we will engage interpretation in ways that are significant both within art historical discourse and in addressing larger questions of human experience and (self- )knowledge, considering the dialogue with the artwork in its affective (emotional) as well as its intellectual aspects. The course will be guided throughout by sustained discussion of a small number of individual artworks, with a focus on pictorial representation (painting, drawing, photography), although sculpture and installation art will also be considered. We will look at works from a range of different cultural traditions, and among the artists we will focus on are Xia Gui, Giorgione, Bruegel, Mirza Ali, Velázquez, Hokusai, Manet, Picasso, Man Ray, Martin, and Sherman. Readings will focus on texts in art history and theory but also include philosophical and psychoanalytic texts (Pater, Wölfflin, Freud, Merleau-Ponty, Barthes, Clark, and Krauss, among others).

Trapp Interviews Conducted by Harriet Nathan in 1998-1999 Copyright 2003 by The Regents of the University of California has been Since 1954 the Regional Oral History Office interviewing leading participants in or well-placed witnesses to major events in the development of Northern California, the West, and the nation. Oral History is a method of collecting historical information through tape-recorded interviews between a narrator with firsthand knowledge of historically significant events and a well-informed interviewer, with the goal of preserving substantive additions to the historical record. The tape recording is transcribed, lightly edited for continuity and clarity, and reviewed by the interviewee. The corrected manuscript is indexed, bound with photographs and illustrative materials, and placed in The Bancroft Library at the University of California, Berkeley, and in other research collections for scholarly use. Because it is primary material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it is reflective, partisan, deeply involved, and irreplaceable. ********************************* All uses of this manuscript are covered by a legal agreement between The Regents of the University of California and Gyongy Laky, dated October 21, 1999. • The Unexpected and Influential Berggruen Gallery
The Unexpected and Influential Berggruen Gallery May 2019 Barely a stone’s throw from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I recently discovered Berggruen Gallery, a three-story art gallery with bright and airy windows. The unusual setting immediate piqued my interest, as most galleries prefer to wall over the windows to create studio lighting. Walking past the location on my daily trek to work, I am able to catch glimpses of sculptures and paintings inside the sparely decorated building. Finally my curiosity gets the best of me and I decide to use my lunch hour to explore the unique space. My first impression of the gallery with its natural-colored woods and simple white walls is that it feels welcoming and friendly. Although I walk in without an appointment, the receptionist enthusiastically greets me and encourages me to explore the space. As I wander around, my eye is immediately drawn to a split staircase on my right. When I look downstairs, I can sense a large cavernous space beneath me, and glancing up at the soaring ceilings, I can make out a few pieces on the upper landing. It creates the sense that the entire building is open and transparent. While I’m there, I have an opportunity to speak with Gretchen Berggruen, who owns the gallery along with partner and husband John Berggruen. Originally located on Grant Avenue for four 10 HAWTHORNE STREET SAN FRANCISCO CA 94105 TEL 415 781 4629 [email protected] BERGGRUEN.COM decades, the gallerists relocated to Hawthorne Street in early 2017 with help from architect Jennifer Weiss (who also happens to be Gretchen’s daughter).

  • For Immediate Release George Condo
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GEORGE CONDO: NEW WORKS OPENING RECEPTION: APRIL 27, 6-8PM 20 East 79th Street, New York Skarstedt is pleased to present George Condo: New Works, an exhibition of new sculptures and paintings on view from April 27 – June 24, 2017 at Skarstedt Upper East Side, 20 East 79th Street, New York, NY 10075. In December 2014 Condo began working on Origin, a small wood sculpture he hand-painted, cut, and glued together. Origin soon became the subject of three larger-scaled variations in bronze. These variations represent a return to methods of sculpting that the artist first took up with his earliest three-dimensional works in the late 1980s—using wood, clay, plaster, paint, fabric, and found objects to create bronze sculptures that incorporate both figurative and abstract elements. Here we see Condo’s concept of the “simulated found object,” which he explored in his earliest exhibited paintings in the 1980s, combined with the use of real found objects from his studio into entirely new figurative forms in bronze. Condo cuts, screws, and hinges together flat surfaces of plywood into angular figurative representations then applies layers of plaster, clay and paint squeezed directly from the tube, “knowing that once cast in bronze all of my markings will remain present and be reinvigorated in the patinated surfaces,” the artist says. Writing in 2015 on the subject of what he referred to as Condo’s “unedited human disasters,” Simon Baker described his sculptures as having: “the barest suggestion of anatomical specificity barely distinguishable from the raw materials from which they were produced, but as with Condo’s work in every medium, openly manifesting a dramatic and irrepressible joy in the process of production.” (Simon Baker, Painting Reconfigured, pg.

  • Berggruen Gallery Is Honored to Present Wayne Thiebaud, An
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE WAYNE THIEBAUD October 16 – November 28, 2020 Berggruen Gallery is honored to present Wayne Thiebaud, an exhibition of paintings, works on paper, and prints from 1961 to present by one of the preeminent living American artists, Wayne Thiebaud. This show marks the gallery’s seventh solo exhibition of Thiebaud’s work since his first show with John Berggruen Gallery in 1973. The gallery is especially proud to hold this exhibition in honor of two very special occasions: Wayne Thiebaud’s 100th birthday and Berggruen Gallery’s 50th anniversary. Wayne Thiebaud will be on view October 16 through November 28, 2020. Spanning six decades, Wayne Thiebaud highlights the artist’s most quintessential, significant, and compelling work from the near entirety of his career. Thiebaud is most often recognized for his delectable still life paintings of confections, from slices of pie arranged in rows to bakery cases filled with intricately decorated cakes to dishes of colorful lollipops and candies. With paint as thick as frosting, Thiebaud’s illustrative depictions emphasize his subject matter’s physicality. Ornately decorated, densely outlined, and starkly shadowed, Thiebaud’s treats sit for the viewer masterfully rendered and enticing. Though the artist rose to prominence for such paintings, Thiebaud is now renowned for a vast breadth of subject matter—steep and winding cityscapes, saturated expanses of the Sacramento Valley, and attentive portraiture of friends or everyday figures. Art critics have connected his work to a breadth of art movements, analogizing his figurative work to that of esteemed American painter Edward Hopper and his aptitude for still life painting to that of 18th century French artist Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HELEN FRANKENTHALER September 26 – November 9, 2019 Berggruen Gallery is proud to present Helen Frankenthaler: Paintings, an exhibition of paintings from 1953–1978 by one of the preeminent artists of her time, Helen Frankenthaler (1928–2011). This presentation continues a history of exhibiting Frankenthaler’s work on the West Coast, dating back to her first Bay Area show at John Berggruen Gallery in 1972. Helen Frankenthaler: Paintings will be on view September 26 through November 9, 2019. The gallery will host an opening reception on Thursday, September 26 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Spanning three decades of Frankenthaler’s career, this exhibition includes some of the artist’s most significant and evocative paintings, highlighting the evolution of her artistic practice in the ways she translated the world around her. The artist did not follow stringent rules of painting, but instead employed a pioneering soak-stain technique that ultimately created new parameters and possibilities. Frankenthaler invented this method of painting by pouring and brushing heavily diluted paint onto unstretched, unprimed canvas. The distinctive process creates ethereal pools of floating color. The effect is almost translucent, more closely resembling watercolor than her actual mediums of oil or acrylic. Soak-staining acknowledges the very flatness of the canvas itself, yet it also produces the illusion of depth and space. Frankenthaler’s paintings are emphatically non-representational, yet her work is often rooted in an evocation of landscape. While certain works in the exhibition render the raw and unparalleled beauty of earthly forms, others simply reveal atmospheres of color that seem to serendipitously dance across the canvas.
