PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2016

I am pleased to present the 2016 Kapi Mana Netball Centre Annual Report. It’s been a huge year learning the ropes at Kapi Mana Netball Centre. There have been numerous challenges along the way and I wish to thank the staff, fellow board members and volunteers who have shared their knowledge and energy to help us. I would not want to see a repeat of the 2016 season, however we overcame some big issues and had some great wins. We started the season with no staff, no funding and questions at the time around the audited accounts. I cannot thank the Community Trust enough for understanding our situation and ensuring we had funding to start the season and employ staff. Tia Rameka and Melissa Love worked tirelessly in the early season managing the operations of the draw and registrations until we recruited staff. I don’t think we would have had a competition without their energy and knowledge and I know they burned the midnight oil for some months. We had the luxury of recruiting Lee Adamson as Centre Manager and Cathy Roa as the Centre Development Manager. I also wish to acknowledge their passion, enthusiasm and professionalism for the way they embraced the Centre and worked under the pump throughout the season. The 2016 season gave the board and staff lots to think about and I think we have made progress to ensure we are more efficient for 2017. One thing I am fanatical about is the Centre delivering a professional, well organised competition that sets our teams up to succeed. This includes getting the weekly draw out with sufficient time for teams, setting clear expectations around fair play, providing development that ensures our players are competitive for Zone and National Trials and at Age Group Representative competitions; developing our coaches/umpires, and ensuring everyone who plays netball has a great experience. The changes to be introduced this year are based on feedback from the membership, what is working well at other centres and where Netball NZ is directing the future of the game. I am aware that some decisions will be met with mixed feelings but I feel strongly if we keep doing the same things we will keep getting the same results. The membership will be invited to comment on changes and the netball season at the end of season debrief. Over the years, we have had a great fundraising opportunity, via the Porirua City Council (PCC), by undertaking the rubbish collection around the courts and buildings. Unfortunately, this opportunity is no longer available due to a restructure and different priorities at Porirua City Council. Kapi Mana Netball had discussions with the PCC, but there was little we could do to keep this fundraiser going. In 2017, the membership will be facing an increase in fees and floodlight court hire. We sought professional advice from Deloitte Private on this and realised we either increase fees or risk the future of the netball centre. The Centre for some years has absorbed many costs to keep costs down and it simply cannot continue. I sincerely hope that any concerns bought about by increased fees can be managed so everyone can continue to enjoy the game. A HUGE thank you to all our volunteers, who without, we would not be able to survive. They give their time and energy generously to a myriad of jobs including representative coaching, managing rep teams, organising umpires, supervising the registration office and assisting the Centre in some form. Whatever the role, these selfless volunteers underpin the delivery of our sport and are much valued. I also wish to acknowledge the board resignations of Melissa Love and Tia Rameka and thank them for their contributions. We look forward to you to seeing you throughout the season as players and coaches. To all the clubs, schools and colleges who participate in Netball - all the best for a fantastic season. I look forward to seeing you all throughout the year and hope you will enjoy the changes we are introducing. Best Wishes

Tracy Johnson President
