Granitic Residual Soil from Broga and Marine Clay from Sg Geological Society of Malaysia, Bulletin 48 June 2004, p. 13 -16 Natural sorption capability of heavy metals: Granitic residual soil from Broga and marine clay from Sg. Besar Selangor WAN ZUHAIRI WAN YAACOB, ABDUL RAHIM SAMSUDIN, MOHD RAMzIEMRAN & CHAN YIK LOON School of Environmental Science and Natural Resources, Faculty of Science and Technology Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 8angi, Selangor Darul Ehsan Abstract: The study aims to investigate sorption capability of heavy metals (HMs), i.e. lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) by two soil types; granite residual soils from Broga (BRG) and marine clay soils from Sg. Besar (SBMC). All samples were subjected to physico-chemical properties and batch equilibrium tests (BET). The physico chemical test results show that SBMC soils have high pH, high clay content, high CEC and SSA values and montmorillonite. In contrast, BRG soils have low pH, low clay content, low CEC and SSA values and contain mainly kaolinite and illite. Sorption tests (BET) show that SBMC soils have higher sorption for HMs compared to BRG soils. The sorption capability of these soils is greatly controlled by their physico-chemical properties. INTRODUCTION (SBMC) and the other from residual soil in Broga Semenyih (BRG) (Figure 1). • Assessment of Heavy Metal Attenuation and Mobility in Compacted Soil Columns (Penilaian Pembantutan Dan Kemobilan Logam Berat Dalam Turus Tanah Terpadat)
Sains Malaysiana 48(11)(2019): 2463–2472 http://dx.doi.org/10.17576/jsm-2019-4811-16 Assessment of Heavy Metal Attenuation and Mobility in Compacted Soil Columns (Penilaian Pembantutan dan Kemobilan Logam Berat dalam Turus Tanah Terpadat) WAN ZUHAIRI, W.Y.* & NURITA, R. ABSTRACT Groundwater pollution from unlined landfill is a worrying problem nowadays. In order to reduce the pollution, a good soil liner is very important. Natural compacted soil is used to prevent leachate from reaching the groundwater. The soil column study was performed to investigate the retention capability of three soil types in Malaysia, namely marine clay (SBMC), weathered metasediments (HMS) and river alluvium soil (ARA). All soil columns were tested against four types of heavy metals, i.e. lead (Pb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn). The breakthrough curves show that the SBMC has better retention capability on heavy metals compared to other soils; indicating less migration of heavy metals through SBMC soil column. The affinity of heavy metals for adsorption were also varied with soil types and can be ranked as follow: SBMC (Pb>Cu>Ni ≈ Zn) and HMS/ARA: Zn ≈ Cu>Pb>N. Soil SBMC showed very high resistance to acidic test solution (i.e. high buffering capacity), where the pH values throughout the test were in an alkaline region with the values of pH 8 to 7. The study also discovered that heavy metals entered the soil columns were retained predominantly at the top 30 mm. Engineering applications of these findings show that soilSBMC has a very good potential to function as soil liner material compared to two other soils (ARA and HMS).

Although its consequences are not as disastrous as other natural disasters such as earthquakes and tornado storm, but it still gives off a great deal of destruction towards social, operational and financial sectors. Recently, most of the events occurred are not happened at the common marked areas and seasons. It happened anywhere and anytime. Hence, it is not surprise that at any time, any place could be affected by flood incidents. Therefore, an analysis on flood incident is crucial in mitigating the flood risk and at the same developing the flood safety measures. This study aims to analyse the flood frequen- cy and flood magnitude of all nine districts in Selangor. Data is gathered from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Selangor, from 2008 to 2017. Petaling Jaya posted the highest number of flood cases at 249 cases out of 1,161 cases in Selangor throughout the period of 2008 to 2017. Poisson distribution was used to estimate the probability of flood occurrence, and the results show that Petaling Jaya has recorded the highest probability of flood occurrence with at least one event in a day.
