www.sciencetarget.com Urban - Scale Material Flow Analysis: Malaysian Cities Case Study Farah Ayuni Shafie 1* , Dasimah Omar 2 , Subramaniam Karuppannan 1 , and Nabilah Ismail 1 1 Faculty of Health Sciences, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam, Selangor, Malaysia 2 Faculty of Architecture, Surveying and Planning, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Shah International Journal of Alam, Malaysia Environment and Sustainability [IJ ES ] Abstract. Urban metabolism studies h ighlight the consumption of input ISSN 1927 - 9566 resources, the process within the system together from the source, use phase Vol. 5 No. 2 , pp. 45 - 5 3 and recycling of wastes. The aim of this study was to assess urban metabolism in (2016) three cities in Malaysia; Kuala Lumpur, Ampang Jaya and Selayang by using Material Flow Analysis (MFA). The data that was analysed included electricity inputs, water inputs, food (rice, eggs and sugar) inputs, carbon dioxide outputs, wastewater outputs and solid waste outputs. The national data were down - scaled to prov ide regional data where deemed necessary. The electricity consump tion of 0.188 koe/cap/day in Klang Valley contributed to carbon dioxide of 0.455 kg/cap/day, while 95.32% of water consumption became wastewater. Consumption of 0.38 kg/cap/day of ‘rice, egg s and sugar’ contributed in the production of 4.5 kg/cap/day of solid wastes. The urban metabolism approach provides information on urban management at city level such as material cycling, energy efficiency and waste management and may also assist in decis ion making for future urban development planning as well as providing an informed and rapid assessment on the environmental performance of urban area.

  • Malaysia Port Klang Power Station Project (Phase 3 /Phase 3-Stage2)
Malaysia Port Klang Power Station Project (Phase 3 /Phase 3-Stage2) External Evaluator: Taro Tsubogo (KRI International Corp.) Tenaga Nasional Berhad1 Field Survey: March, 2006 1. Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan Location of the project site Port Klang (Kapar Phase 3) power station 1.1 Background With the high economic growth, energy demand in the Peninsular Malaysia had grown significantly over the last years with an annual growth rate of 11.4% to 3,447 MW in 1990. Although the growth pace was expected to slow down in the future, energy demand was forecasted to reach 10,448 MW in 2000 with an annual growth rate of 10.6%. Since total installed capacity in 1990 was still 4,576 MW, a serious energy shortage was expected to occur in the future. To fill this gap, construction and expansion of power plants was indispensable option. On the other hand, the Malaysian Government carried out “Four fuel diversification strategy” to enhance the use of indigenous resources and reduce petroleum dependency. The Sixth Malaysia Plan (1991-1995) also envisioned to augment gas supply. The project, to construct 1,000 MW multi-fuel fired power plant, was therefore expected to contribute to both increment of supply capacity and diversification of energy source. 1.2 Objectives The project’s objective was to meet the rapidly increasing demand for energy and assure stable energy supply in the Peninsular Malaysia through construction of a thermal power station (known as Kapar Phase 3 Plant) located adjacent to the existing plants in Port Klang area, and thereby contribute to further economic growth and reducing oil dependence of the country.

Khaironizam 1 and Y. Norma-Rashid 1 ABSTRACT We report the mudskipper Periophthalmus spilotus the for first time from Peninsular Malaysia ,based on 18 individuals captured at Sementa ,Selangor ,from May to August ,2000 individuals The individuals caught h巴re are similar to those from Sumatra described by MURDY & TAKITA , (1999). (1999). Features distinguishing this species from the available congeneric species 紅巳 described below. below. An alysis of the stomach contents of 20 specimens revealed carnivorous feeding habits. Key Key words: Food habits ,goby ,mudskipper , new record ,Peninsular Malaysia , Periophthalmus spilotus spilotus INTRODUCTION Mudskippers , small euryhalin 巴 fishes best known for their amphibious habits ,紅 e the most conspicuous and unique fishes of mangrove areas. Th ey are active on land during low tide tide and can live out of water for some time. 官 le greatest diversity of mudskippers (subfamily Oxudercinae Oxudercinae of Gobiidae) is in the genus Periophthalmus (Ps.) , with 14 species (MURDY , 1989; 1989; LEEET A L., 1995 ,MURDY & TAKITA ,1999). Th eir distribution and habitats are based on the pr< 回 ence of suitable muddy substrates such as those found in mangrove swamps , estuaries estuaries and mudflats in the intertidal zones of the Indo-Pacific and West Africa (MACNAE , 1968; 1968; CLAYTON , 1993). CANTOR (1849) was the first author to record the occu 町 ence of mudskippers in Peninsular Peninsular Malaysia , but he did not record any Periophthalmus in his review.

  • Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: the Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977
Collaboration, Christian Mission and Contextualisation: The Overseas Missionary Fellowship in West Malaysia from 1952 to 1977 Allen MCCLYMONT A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Kingston University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History. Submitted June 2021 ABSTRACT The rise of communism in China began a chain of events which eventually led to the largest influx of Protestant missionaries into Malaya and Singapore in their history. During the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), a key part of the British Government’s strategy to defeat communist insurgents was the relocation of more than 580,000 predominantly Chinese rural migrants into what became known as the ‘New Villages’. This thesis examines the response of the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), as a representative of the Protestant missionary enterprise, to an invitation from the Government to serve in the New Villages. It focuses on the period between their arrival in 1952 and 1977, when the majority of missionaries had left the country, and assesses how successful the OMF was in fulfilling its own expectation and those of the Government that invited them. It concludes that in seeking to fulfil Government expectation, residential missionaries were an influential presence, a presence which contributed to the ongoing viability of the New Villages after their establishment and beyond Independence. It challenges the portrayal of Protestant missionaries as cultural imperialists as an outdated paradigm with which to assess their role. By living in the New Villages under the same restrictions as everyone else, missionaries unconsciously became conduits of Western culture and ideas. At the same time, through learning local languages and supporting indigenous agency, they encouraged New Village inhabitants to adapt to Malaysian society, while also retaining their Chinese identity.
