The new year is off to a challenging start, with the novel coronavirus, which has been declared a ISSUE... public-health emergency of international concern by the WHO, affecting many people around the world. Medical professionals and members of the public are unfortunately facing unprecedented President’s Message 1 pressure caused by this virus. HKJC ILCM Updates 3 Meanwhile, I am delighted to report that other projects of the Academy are making good progress. Obituary – Stephen HY 4 The study on the physical and psychological well-being of local young Fellows and trainees, Wei (1937–2020) conducted by the Young Fellows Chapter last year, is currently being analysed. Findings of the survey are targeted to be published in the first half of 2020, allowing us to better understand the Event Highlights 5 aspects and means of sustaining good health and well-being for young doctors in Hong Kong. Phase 1 of the system, involving fellowship nomination Academy Fellows process, is under progressive development and the target launch date will be in the third quarter of this year. In addition, a number of medical events bringing together regional and international Organising Your Events 18 medical education experts from multi-disciplines are scheduled. Following the establishment of at the Academy the Professionalism and Ethics Committee in 2019, the first event “Workshop on Development of Best Practice Guidelines in Genetic and Genomic Medicine” was successfully held last November. New College Council 19 A series of enlightening events including talks and seminars are being planned. Moreover, the Members Medical Education Conference (MEC), one of the flagship events of the Academy, will be held on 30 May this year. This year’s MEC, titled ‘Assessment in Postgraduate Medical Education’, features interactive workshops and inspirational plenaries highlighting the concept of assessment for learning. In addition, the Young Fellows Chapter will organise a symposium to share young doctors’ perspectives on postgraduate assessment. I look forward to seeing you at the MEC in May! Prof CS Lau President News and Announcements New CME / CPD Principles & Guidelines 2020–22 A revised set of CME / CPD Principles & Guidelines has been approved and will become effective from the next cycle. Minor changes are in Section 10, in which the new Guidelines reflect the new requirement from Medical Council of Hong Kong for the Academy to provide information on CME/CPD of all Fellows after the end of cycle (instead of providing the information on those non- compliance cases only in the past). Fellows can download the new guidelines from the website or using the QR code: www.hkam.org.hk/news/list/201908/HKAM%20CME-CPD%20Guideline%202020-22.pdf Maintenance and repair work on external walls of Academy Building (Phase II: January– June 2020) Phase II of the major maintenance and repair work on the external walls of the Academy building will be carried out in the first half of 2020. For safety reasons, the Fellows’ Garden on 3/F is closed until further notice. The Academy will ensure events held at the building are affected as minimally as possible. Medical Education Conference 2020, 30 May 2020 The Academy is organising the 6th Medical Education Conference (MEC) on 30 May 2020, with the theme “Assessment in Postgraduate Medical Education” this year. The one-day conference features plenary lectures, symposia and workshops which will be delivered by renowned local and overseas medical professionals. HKJC DPRI Updates Emergency Preparedness: Get Ready. Basic Steps Campaign The Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute (HKJC DPRI) launched the “Emergency Preparedness: Get Ready. Basic Steps” campaign in December 2019 to promote disaster preparedness among local communities. The latest population-based survey conducted by HKJC DPRI found that 61% of interviewees do not take preventive measures even though they are aware of growing threats of natural disasters. Therefore, the aim of the new campaign is to educate the public to realise the potential risks, to plan accordingly, and to be prepared to respond to emergencies. In addition to promotional videos, a series of educational resources including printed materials, games, and activities for children have been published to convey the importance of disaster preparedness. Further details can be found online: https://www.hkjcdpri.org.hk/emergency-preparedness-get-ready-basic-steps-campaign 2 Spring 2020 HKJC ILCM Updates New HKJC ILCM Honorary Director Dr HY So has been appointed as the new Honorary Director of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJC ILCM), effective after the Annual General Meeting on 6 December 2019. HKJC ILCM would like to extend sincere gratitude to Dr PP Chen for his guidance and advice on leading HKJC ILCM in pursuit of excellence in simulation-based medical education during the past four years. Dr Chen will continue to work closely with HKJC ILCM. Please simply visit the following link leading to our Facebook page to chat with us and give us likes: www.facebook.com/HKJCILCM/ Procedural Sedation Safety Course HKJC ILCM has collaborated with the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists (HKCA) to develop the Procedural Sedation Safety Course (PSSC) to facilitate medical professionals to meet the requirement for the HKAM Procedural Sedation Guideline published on 1 April 2019. The first course ran on 20 October 2019 and Fellows from different specialty Colleges participated. During the one- day course, participants experienced high-fidelity simulated scenarios related to procedural sedation practice and took part in interactive problem-based learning. After completion of the course, participants had a better understanding of monitoring during procedure and recovery, and were able to identify and manage sedation-related complications. Spring 2020 3 Air Crew Resuscitation Simulation Course Co-organised by HKJC ILCM and The Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists, Air Crew Resuscitation Simulation (ACRS) Course is tailor-made for the Government Flying Service and its officers (Air Crewman Officer, Air Medical Officer, and Air Medical Nursing Officer) to strengthen their clinical and procedural skills from initial assessment on the scene to inflight treatment, especially in the face of potential acute clinical deterioration. The first course was successfully held on 15 December 2019 with 10 Government Flying Service Officers trained. Participants found the dynamic and focused training, delivered by experienced faculty, most rewarding and beneficial. More ACRS courses have been planned in the first half of 2020. Enquiries: (852) 2871 8718 or [email protected] Obituary – Stephen HY Wei (1937–2020) Prof Stephen HY Wei passed away peacefully on 27 January 2020 at the age of 82. Prof Wei made profound contributions to the dental profession and community, particularly paediatric dentistry, serving many roles in Hong Kong, the United States, China, and internationally. In Hong Kong, among his many roles and achievements, Prof Wei was Former Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, Former Chair Professor and Head of Children’s Dentistry and Orthodontics at The University of Hong Kong, and Director of Prince Philip Dental Hospital.
