An area organization named 100 Women Who Care donated $3,800 to the Firehouse Cultural Center last week, the donation coming in the form of 38 checks for $100. Women Who Care is a group of women who meet four times per year, pledging to donate $100 per meeting to local charities and non-profit orga- nizations. At each meeting, members vote on which organiza- tion they wish to donate to. On Thursday, it was the Firehouse Cultural Center. “This means that our summer programs will go forward,” said cultural center executive director Georgia Vahue. “It means that we will be able to offer scholarships for some of them. We are thrilled.” Ann Rand of 100 Woman Who Care was also thrilled to provide a helping hand. “We’re excited because the work that we are doing supports the activities of people right here, the money stays local,” she said. “It is a very easy way for people to have an impact. We only have four meetings a year. We come collectively together to make an impact on organiza- tions like this. Instead of individually giving a little bit, we can make a bigger impact.” Pictured above are Georgia Vahue, cen- ter, of the Firehouse Cultural Center and Penny Smith and Ann Rand of 100 Women Who Care. For more information about 100 Women Who Care call Rand at 813-641-3817 or email 100WW- [email protected] or visit their 100 Women Who Care Facebook page. One just might be. Since 1979, the World Meteorological Organization has been creating lists of names to identify hurricanes in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. There are six lists total for each ocean. The lists have 21 male and female names, which alternate. One name is selected for each letter of the alphabet except for “Q,” “U” and “Z.” In 2009, for example, the list for the Atlantic Ocean includes Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika and so forth. The first hurricane of the season there will be named Ana. The lists repeat every six years, and when an awful hurricane strikes like Katrina, that name is replaced. Sometimes, there are more hurricanes in a season than there are names on the list. Forecasters must then use names from the Greek alphabet, such as Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta, as happened in 2005.
