Britpop & Indie Rock Cover Band BANGBay Area – Britpop ON& Indie Rock Cover Band Bang On is a new Bay Area cover band, specializing in 90s Britpop Demo Tracks: (Oasis/Radiohead/Blur) , 80s Indie and Postpunk (The Cure/Smiths/Stone Roses), 70s Glam (Bowie/T-Rex), and hits from newer post-Britpop bands miniurl.org/BangOnSongs such as Franz Ferdinand (full list of covered bands below). The band’s objective is to provide fans with the song variety of an indie dance club night combined with the excitement of a live show. In the past year, Bang On has played in San Francisco at Café du Nord, The Red Devil Lounge , LiPo Lounge, Kimo’s, Cat Club, Milk Bar, The Knockout and Grant & Green Saloon in North Beach. In April, the band played a special and very successful Pulp concert after-party at Showdown near the Warfield Theatre. Most recently, Bang On was the featured live act at Club Leisure, DEBASER and The Queen is Dead. Leisure is San Francisco’s premier Britpop club; DEBASER is SF’s best ‘90s alternative dance party and The Queen is Dead is the best Smiths night in SF. Bang On played all club sets to packed and energized dance floors. The band is a dynamic five-piece that brings a high energy show to enthusiastic, dedicated crowds of Britpop and Indie Rock fans who are under- served by a lack of bar and club bands paying tribute to these genres. Bang On’s front man, Jake Chaplin is an accomplished singer and multi- instrumentalist. His vocal versatility makes him perfect to cover this diverse group of artists , from the gravel-toned sounds of Oasis to the high notes of Radiohead. Jason Spath, Ian Jones and John Holloway have been performing in San Francisco bands throughout the last decade, and Mark Sharp is a veteran South Bay bassist. The experienced members of Bang On have the stage presence, chops and performance ability to keep a crowd of Britpop and Indie Rock fans dancing and wanting more, through to last call. The band is looking to develop ongoing relationships with bars, clubs and concert venues throughout the Bay Area in order to implement a regular rotation of area shows. The members of Bang On are committed to doing the promotional work needed to ensure a great turnout.     The Interplay of Authority, Masculinity, and Signification in the “Grunge Killed Glam Metal” Narrative by Holly Johnson A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2014, Holly Johnson ii Abstract This thesis will deconstruct the "grunge killed '80s metal” narrative, to reveal the idealization by certain critics and musicians of that which is deemed to be authentic, honest, and natural subculture. The central theme is an analysis of the conflicting masculinities of glam metal and grunge music, and how these gender roles are developed and reproduced. I will also demonstrate how, although the idealized authentic subculture is positioned in opposition to the mainstream, it does not in actuality exist outside of the system of commercialism. The problematic nature of this idealization will be examined with regard to the layers of complexity involved in popular rock music genre evolution, involving the inevitable progression from a subculture to the mainstream that occurred with both glam metal and grunge. It is an open access forum on the role of sound in Abstract cultural practices, providing a trans- disciplinary platform for the presentation of research and practice in areas such as Amongst the ways in which it maps out the geographical imagination of place, music plays a unique acoustic ecology, sensory anthropology, role in the formation and reformation of spatial memories, connecting to and reviving alternative sonic arts, musicology, technology studies times and places latent within a particular environment.     Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists.

Denn diesem Musikgenie mit dem Namen John Liedermann lässt irgendwie genau diese Musikepoche in seinem Sound Revuepassieren. Manch einer wird jetzt genervt denken, ,,Die 80er haben angerufen, sie wollen ihre Musik wieder“ aber dies nur auf den ersten Blick. John Liedermann ist nämlich ein intelligenter Songwriter, der mit seiner musikalischen Kunst nicht nur gut unterhält, sondern auch alltägliche Dinge und ernste Themen anspricht. So ist das bereits im Vorfeld beleuchtete Werk Der Mann eine Hymne darüber, dass man wahre Helden nicht im Kino, sondern unter ganz normalen Menschen findet: Es geht um einen Menschen, der einem anderen Menschen das Leben gerettet hat und dafür weder Anerkennung, noch Lob erwartet. Für Joh Liedermann begann die musikalische Reise im Alter von sieben Jahren, als er von seinem Großvater seine erste Gitarre geschenkt bekommen hat.
