PRUITT, DANIEL JOSEPH, M.A. Popular Culture as Pharmakon: Metamodernism and the Deconstruction of Status Quo Consciousness. (2020) Directed by Dr. Christian Moraru. 76 pp. As society continues to virtualize, popular culture and its influence on our identities grow more viral and pervasive. Consciousness mediates the cultural forces influencing the audience, often determining whether fiction acts as remedy, poison, or simultaneously both. In this essay, I argue that antimimetic techniques and the subversion of formal expectations can interrupt the interpretive process, allowing readers and viewers to become more aware of the systems that popular fiction upholds. The first chapter will explore the subversion of traditional form in George Saunders’s Lincoln in the Bardo. Using Caroline Levine’s Forms as a blueprint to study the interaction of aesthetic, social, and political forms, I examine how Saunders’s novel draws attention to the constructed nature of identity and the forms that influence this construction. In the second chapter, I discuss how the metamodernity of the animated series Rick and Morty allows the show to disrupt status quo consciousness. Once this rupture occurs, viewers are more likely to engage with social critique and interrogate the self-replicating systems that shape the way we establish meaning. Ultimately, popular culture can suppress or encourage social change, and what often determines this difference is whether consciousness passively absorbs or critically processes the messages in fiction. Animating Transcultural Communities: Animation Fandom in North America and East Asia from 1906–2010 By Sandra Annett A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of English, Film, and Theatre University of Manitoba Winnipeg © 2011 Sandra Annett Abstract This dissertation examines the role that animation plays in the formation of transcultural fan communities. A ―transcultural fan community‖ is defined as a group in which members from many national, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds find a sense of connection across difference, engaging with each other through a mutual interest in animation while negotiating the frictions that result from their differing social and historical contexts. The transcultural model acts as an intervention into polarized academic discourses on media globalization which frame animation as either structural neo-imperial domination or as a wellspring of active, resistant readings. Rather than focusing on top-down oppression or bottom-up resistance, this dissertation demonstrates that it is in the intersections and conflicts between different uses of texts that transcultural fan communities are born. The methodologies of this dissertations are drawn from film/media studies, cultural studies, and ethnography. The first two parts employ textual close reading and historical research to show how film animation in the early twentieth century (mainly works by the Fleischer Brothers, Ōfuji Noburō, Walt Disney, and Seo Mitsuyo) and television animation in the late twentieth century (such as The Jetsons, Astro Boy and Cowboy Bebop) depicted and generated nationally and ethnically diverse audiences. -

THE LOST BOY Leda Hayes A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2017 Committee: Becca Cragin, Advisor Jeremy Wallach Esther Clinton Jeffrey Brown © 2017 Leda Hayes All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Becca Cragin, Advisor The following thesis seeks to contribute to contemporary masculinities scholarship by exploring the recent deployment, on and among 20th and 21st century MIC telecommunications, of the myth of the lost boy. It begins with a close look at the origin of the myth of the lost boy, a form first authored as a revision to modernity’s myth of the boy by New Imperialists who sought to justify the long term occupation of colonial territories and protectorates and thus shifted, away from an earlier model of domestic masculinity that pressed forward towards an exhaustive known, rational, and developed; and towards a model of masculinity that was restricted to a Bakhtinian adventure time of serial story, homosocial partnership, and performances of primal boyhood. After a subsequent exploration of the medium and mandates of MIC synergy, that utilizes Marshall McLuhan’s science of medium, this thesis offers that a late 20th and early 21st century community among such Futurama discovers, within the lost boy 2.0 it embraces, a configuration of masculinity that can remasculinize Futurama’s dogma of networked node. While the myth of the lost boy is often popularly proposed to be problematic, detached, and disordered, my research suggests that the myth is instead a restorative configuration that discovers the model of network within Futurama to be inspired by an organic, empowered masculine affection: far from lost, the lost boy of 2017 is the heart of labor, kinship, narrative, and life. -
