  • ACHS VIRTUAL CONFERENCE 12Th AUGUST – 8TH SEPTEMBER Background
Book of Abstracts & Virtual Conference Programme Book ACHS VIRTUAL CONFERENCE 12th AUGUST – 8TH SEPTEMBER Background The Association of Critical Heritage Studies (ACHS) is an international network of scholars, researchers and practitioners working in the broad and interdisciplinary field of heritage studies. The primary aim of ACHS is to promote heritage as an area of critical enquiry. Inspired by the paradigms of change inherent in postcolonial studies, and the developing interest in critical heritage studies as a field of research and academic engagement, it was officially founded in 2012, in Gothenburg, Sweden. ACHS 2020: Futures, the fifth biennial conference of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies took place across August and September 2020. The conference was chaired by Professor Rodney Harrison, AHRC Heritage Priority Area Leadership Fellow and Professor of Heritage Studies at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, University College London. It was organised by a local organising committee drawn from a range of institutions and disciplinary backgrounds. The local organising committee was supported by a scientific committee who as well as reviewing abstracts and chairing stand-alone sessions, helped to shape the intellectual agenda of the conference. The conference office was supported in the weeks running up to the conference by a small team of staff and volunteers with additional staff and volunteers joining for the conference live dates. The UCL Institute of Archaeology is one of the world’s leading international centres of expertise for research and teaching in the fields of Museum Studies, Conservation, Cultural Heritage Studies, and Public Archaeology. The IoA has a long history of promoting Critical Heritage Studies as a field of academic research and teaching, and a long association with the ACHS.

Session 1: Thursday, November 3, 11:45 AM-1:15 PM Panel 1A: Thursday, November 3, 11:45 AM-1:15 PM Ansley 1 (no AV) Creating Pathology Literature and science studies reminds us that pathology — far from a self-evident category — is often methodologically, culturally, or discursively produced. This panel explores the processes by which categories of pathology are created; it also addresses how ideas about pathology can be revised through attention to creative forms, particularly narrative. Andrew Gaedtke and Ajitpaul Mangat explore the intersections of mental difference, biography, and narrative, arguing that narrative’s emphasis on world-building and plasticity invites us to understand mental difference (schizophrenia and autism) in terms of creativity as opposed to disability or disease. Rebecah Pulsifer analyzes the discursive contexts in which pathological categories (autism and average intelligence) arise. Their papers demonstrate how pathological categories often emerge from creative interplay among disciplinary boundaries, and they argue that attention to these categories’ complex genealogies necessitates a more nuanced account of the relationship between the normative and the pathological. Together, the papers on this panel point to the ways in which the nexus of literature and science allows for the category of the pathological to be reimagined

The Millennial Politics of Tumblr Feminism Kyrstin Felts Department of Art History & Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal April 2017 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts © Kyrstin Felts, 2017 Table of Contents 3 Abstract/Résumé 4 Acknowledgements 5 Introduction 18 Chapter One: Youth Feminist Subcultures under Neoliberalism: Riot Grrrl and Tumblr Feminism 45 Chapter Two: The Culture, Content, and Circulation of Tumblr Feminism 77 Chapter Three: Tumblr Feminism as an Apolitical Tool of Politicization 99 Conclusion 103 References 2 Abstract In recent years, feminism has become extremely popular on Tumblr, a social media and blogging website. Teenagers and young adults have taken to the site to converse with others about feminism, to learn about the topic and to redefine it for their generation. In this thesis, I examine the phenomenon of Tumblr feminism. I use it to argue against the idea that feminism is over, as well to provide positive examples of online activism to respond to critiques of the practice as lazy and brainless. I situate Tumblr Feminism within the larger backdrop of postfeminism and neoliberalism, contrasting its anxious and pessimistic outlook with that the more joyful and vivacious one of the Riot Grrrls of the 1990s. I then examine Tumblr feminism as content, working towards a flexible definition of what Tumblr feminism is. Finally, I speak to actual teenage and young adult users of the site to explore how Tumblr’s position at the intersection of politics and apolitical social media use provides an accessible space for young people to do feminism.

To research and design with the subject of intimacy is to trouble and to ask for trouble, and by staying with the trouble of intimacy, to paraphrase Donna Haraway, I articulate and perform a way of designing not as a way out of trouble, but as a way of making trouble and staying with the trouble. I argue that by staying with the trouble, designers may learn to be “truly present” and respond to social, cultural and political issues of intimate technology. The methodology interweaves design research, feminist technoscience, critical theory and software studies into a critical-feminist design methodology.

SOCIAL MEDIA, BEDROOM CULTURES AND FEMININITY: EXPLORING THE INTERSECTION OF CULTURE, POLITICS AND IDENTITY IN THE DIGITAL MEDIA PRACTICES OF GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IN ENGLAND By FRANCES ROGAN A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Political Science and International Studies School of Government and Society College of Social Sciences University of Birmingham September 2017 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract In recent years, the position of (post-)millennial girls and young women within the digital landscape of social media has proven to be a topic of much interest to a number of feminists, journalists and cultural commentators. On the one hand, girls’ (social) media practices are presented as a key site of concern, wherein new digital technologies are said to have produced an intensification of individualized, neoliberal and post-feminist identities. At the same time, others have championed access to social media for young people as a revolutionary political tool, wherein previously marginalised political subjects (such as girls) can access and participate within new and exciting political cultures.

The Pussyhat Project: Texturing the Struggle for Feminist Solidarity By Katja May1 Abstract This article moves beyond binary conceptions of the Pussyhat Project as “good or bad activism”, or indeed as good or bad feminism (Zouggarri, 2018, p. 1). Instead, I use the concept of texture as a lens through which to trace the different threads that have shaped and continue to shape the Pussyhat Project and its reception, while simultaneously paying attention to the entangled nature of these threads. Attending to the different textures of the process of making as well as the finished object serves to question or, at least, complicate dominant narratives and concepts of feminist solidarity, protest and craft.
