• ASMMR Newsletter Vol 2 Issue 3
Volume 2, Issue 3 April 2010 The Australasian Society for Motorsports Medicine and Rescue Contents Race control Clinical review Recent race results Worldwide motorsport update Caught by the cameras Race control Another month and there’s been some great motorsports. There is a wealth of events this weekend alone with the V8s in Hamilton, the WRC in Turkey, F1 in Shanghai and the Red Bull Air Race in Perth. There have been some spectacular crashes as well – Sebastian Buemi’s front wheels parted company with the rest of the car in testing at Shanghai, leaving him with no way of steering and relying on the crash barrier and gravel trap to stop him. Also during testing, Adilson Kindlemann’s plane skimmed and then crashed into the Swan River in Perth. During day 1 of racing in Turkey, one of the drivers got a bit enthusiastic at a jump, took huge air and snapped off his front left wheel. It’s a good job there are willing volunteers on standby to scrape them up, patch them back together and send them off racing again. Given the carnage, this months review looks at an article that tested intranasal fentanyl in the pre- hospital setting. While not truly representative of out patient group and flawed in many ways, it is the first to try and justify a fairly simple route for a good analgesic in the pre-hospital population. There is a review of some notable motorsporting occasions around the world and the usual update of results for some of the bigger professional series Good luck.

Volume 2, Issue 2 March 2010 The Australasian Society for Motorsports Medicine and Rescue Contents Race control Clinical review Recent race results FIA update Caught by the cameras Race control Welcome to the March edition of the ASMMR newsletter. I apologise for the hiatus, but work overtook for a while. Some holiday time might have had something to do with it too! Either way, it’s season opening time and the IRC, WRC and Formula 1 have kicked off. The V8’s stormed around Adelaide and the MotoGP and AORC marques are soon to get going. The Clinical review outlines the principles and problems of a massive blood transfusion and the FIA releases a motorsport textbook for doctors and other clinical and rescue providers. The 2010 season is taking off in earnest and if anyone wishes to contribute to the body of information for the Australian and wider rescue and medicine community via the ASMMR, you can do so by sending the article to me at [email protected] or by posting a comment on the ASMMR Google Groups site ( http://groups.google.com.au/group/ASMMR ). Good luck. Matthew Mac Partlin Copyright Matthew Mac Partlin, 2010 Page 1 of 6 Clinical review Massive blood transfusion A massive blood transfusion (MBT) occurs when a large volume blood transfusion is given within a short period and often in the context of major trauma. There are a variety of definitions applied, depending upon the source of information, but it usually centres on the replacement of the total circulating blood volume within 24 hours.

  • Friday Wrap: Loeb on Top at Home
Friday wrap: Loeb on top at home Sebastien Loeb will start day two of Rallye de France Alsace leading the FIA World Rally Championship qualifier by 13.1s. Loeb, who can become world champion for a ninth time by beating Citroen team-mate Mikko Hirvonen on the asphalt counter based in Strasbourg, has won four of day one’s eight all- asphalt stages with second-placed Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala claiming three stage bests to remain firmly in the fight for top spot. “It’s been a good day with no problems at all,” said Loeb. “We’ve done the right tyre choices but it’s been a big push because Jari has been pushing very hard.” Latvala said he lost ground on the day’s penultimate stage on sections where mud and gravel had been dragged onto the road. Nevertheless the Finn revealed it had been one of his best performances on asphalt in the WRC: “We’re still a bit up and down and not as consistent as it should be. But we are still in the fight and it’s still going on.” Behind Latvala, Mikko Hirvonen, in the second works Citroen, holds a narrow advantage of 0.7s over Latvala’s Ford team-mate Petter Solberg in the battle for third. Dani Sordo’s ultimate pace was masked by set-up and brake issues on his MINI John Cooper Works WRC. The Spaniard is fifth overall, one place ahead of Thierry Neuville, who showed plenty of pace in the morning but was slightly more circumspect in the afternoon following a spin in his Citroen Junior DS3 WRC.

  • STEPHANE SARRAZIN Top Circuit Racer on His Rallying Return in the ERC
PRESS KIT FIA European Rally Championship 2013, Giru di Corsica-Tour de Corse, round five of 12 (16-18 May) EVENT PREVIEW: Formula One racers in the mix for Tour de Corse ERC glory There will be serious competition ahead on round five of the FIA European Rally Championship as two Formula One racers line up for an event steeped in tradition and challenging in the extreme. Shown live on Eurosport and France 3 Corsica, Giru di Corsica-Tour de Corse is one of the most legendary rallies in existence with a demanding route around the picturesque Mediterranean island from 16-18 May. Of the impressive 58-car entry – the event’s largest for five years – Robert Kubica and Stéphane Sarrazin are among the standout drivers in their turbocharged Regional Rally Cars. Kubica, who has started 76 grands prix, is demonstrating his formidable talent and determination in this year’s ERC as he recovers to full fitness following a rally crash in 2011. Despite his limited knowledge of the sport, the Polish ace has led both ERC rallies he’s started to date in his Citroën DS3 RRC and has a tally of 15 stage wins to his name. Sarrazin, who raced just once in Formula One in 1999 but has a strong record of success in the Le Mans 24 Hours, is making his ERC debut on Tour de Corse in a MINI John Cooper Works that he will drive for the first time during a test on May 13. While Sarrazin has previous experience of the asphalt rally – three times in competition and once as a zero car driver in 2012 – Kubica is a Corsica novice so will be building his experience from the first of 11 stages on Friday morning.
