(collectively, “Spotify” or “Defendants”), alleging as follows: NATURE OF ACTION 1. 1 Drill music in the dock A look at the use of drill music in criminal trials and a practical guide for defence practitioners Introduction The recent Sewell report has, some might say deliberately and for political reasons, sparked further exchanges between the perceived opposing sides in the so-called ‘culture wars’. This has sought to paint an overall picture of the treatment of minorities in Britain which is it at odds with the lived experience of many. To give a judicial summing-up style warning up front: ‘if we appear to express a view, reject it unless it accords with your own’. The authors of this article are, at best, only really placed to speak of the situation as it affects the Criminal Justice System. How the dynamics and politics of race play out in our courtrooms up and down the country. In these places, inequalities are laid bare on a daily basis in terms of the proportional representation of the different ethnic groups. The recent Sewell report at least acknowledges this imbalance: “..people from ethnic minorities are overrepresented at many points of the criminal justice system. The largest disparities appear at the point of stop and search and, as the Lammy Review pointed out, at arrest, custodial sentencing and prison population. Examining UK drill music through sentiment trajectory analysis Bennett Kleinberg1,2 and Paul McFarlane1,3 1 Department of Security and Crime Science, University College London 2 Dawes Centre for Future Crime, University College London 3 Centre for Global City Policing, University College London Abstract This paper presents how techniques from natural language processing can be used to examine the sentiment trajectories of gang- related drill music in the United Kingdom (UK). This work is important because key public figures are loosely making controversial linkages between drill music and recent escalations in youth violence in London. Thus, this paper examines the dynamic use of sentiment in gang-related drill music lyrics. The findings suggest two distinct sentiment use patterns and statistical analyses revealed that lyrics with a markedly positive tone attract more views and engagement on YouTube than negative ones. Our work provides the first empirical insights into the language use of London drill music, and it can, therefore, be used in future studies and by policymakers to help understand the alleged drill- gang nexus. Keywords: social media, sentiment analysis, drill music, gang crime, lyrics 1 Introduction Gang-related violence is increasing in the UK. While there have been noteworthy reductions in many crime types, since 2017, there has been an alarming rise in serious violence, particularly gun and knife crimes involving young people (Office for National Statistics, 2018). Tackling this increase in serious violence is now more complicated because current research contends that street gang-rivalries, which often result in violence, have moved to online social media platforms. In these cases, social media is used to communicate hostile intentions and deliberately antagonise opposing street gangs (Décary-Hétu & Morselli, 2011; Pinkney & Robinson-Edwards, 2018; Pyrooz, Decker, & Jr, 2015). -

More than Just a Rapper: Mainstream and Alternative Media’s Depiction of Nipsey Hussle By Jonathan Joshua Hazlewood Master of Arts, Wilfrid Laurier University, 2020 THESIS Submitted to the Department/Faculty of Criminology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for Master of Arts in Criminology Wilfrid Laurier University © Jonathan Joshua Hazlewood 2020 Abstract Mainstream and alternative media depict individuals differently from one another. In stories covering African American rappers and homicide victims, mainstream and alternative stories use images, phrases, and people to portray certain ideas to their audience. In terms of mainstream news outlets, stories associate criminality onto African American homicide victims and rappers through labeling them as brutes, focusing on the crimes they commit, and highlighting criminal associations (Aquil, 2018; Cochran, 2015; Dukes & Gaither 2018; Wright & Washington, 2019). While alternative outlets have offered sympathetic and well-rounded representations that depict the life, personal accomplishments, and good deeds of an African American victim (Irene, Deckard, & Rodriguez, 2016). Using a Social Constructionist lens, this thesis examines alternative and mainstream media’s depiction of Nipsey Hussle. The goal of this paper was to determine if narratives and labels used with African American homicide victims and rappers are present in the media’s depiction of Nipsey Hussle. Hip hop and its Islamic roots have often been mentioned by African-American hip hop pioneers and the Muslim hip hoppers in Muslim countries. Hip hop often represents marginal youths’ symbolic resistance against racism, police brutality and poverty in an American context. Its marriage to Islamic ideology creates a space for further research and investigation. The hip hop prophecies of liberty, hope and success together with Islamic standards and moral values of redemption, equality and promoting virtue and preventing vice1, have shaped vibrant youth scenes in post-Suharto Indonesia (1998 onwards), post- Ben Ali’s Tunisia (2011 onwards) and the United states in the time of Obama (2009-2017). The thesis is built on data from ethnographic fieldwork that was carried out for 13 months (July 2014-august 2015) in Indonesia, Tunisia and the United States. -

Muddy Waters, the black founder of Chicago blues, never could have imagined the profound influence he would someday have on the music industry as a whole, even influencing modern rap music. Today’s rap artists, who are predominately black, write lyrics containing many of the same themes and emotions as their blues predecessors, yet many people passionately dislike rap music while holding firm to a respect for the blues. Despite the blatant similarities between the two genres, many white Americans are unwilling to look past the gang violence that has often been associated with rap music as a way to justify racism against black Americans. Chicago, a breeding ground for many blues and rap artists and home to many high- status whites and low-status blacks, provides the most clear-cut example of musical dislike interacting with social exclusion. Blues music holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans, and for good reason. Brought to America by slaves, the blues formed out of African oral tradition on Southern plantations in the nineteenth century.
