Dunelm, M.A. Sheffield Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy College of Arts University of Glasgow 2012 Dedicated to Dr Howard Thomas Miles (1931-2006) Abstract Battlefield sites are some of the most iconic locations in any nation’s store of heritage attractions and continue to capture the imagination of visitors. They have strong historic, cultural, nationalistic and moral resonances and speak to people on a national as well as a local scale. They have the power to provoke contention but at the same time foster understanding and respect through the consideration of deep moral questions. Battlefields are suffused with powerful stories of courage, sacrifice, betrayal and even cowardice. They have a strong sense of place and can provoke a range of cognitive and emotional reactions. -
The Day Loch Ness Rocked
The day Loch Ness Rocked th On the 24 June 2006 Loch Ness took centre stage as Fatboy Slim and a host of other DJ legends rolled into town. This was just one more stop on a lengthy world tour; Brazil, Australia, Japan, Dores. On every level this was a major coup (a report calculated that the region benefited to the tune of £7m) proving again that Scotland can play at the very top with the big boys. They said it couldn't be done, that the roads would crumble, the infrastructure shatter and the sky fall in. Chaos in Inverness with fans stranded and, if they did make it, boiling clouds of midges would eat them alive. But by 2pm the bulk of the 23,400 fans were happily on site, the hardcore claiming a space at the front and the oldies laying down picnic rugs at the back. How fresh, how exciting, when generations of people, from all over the country gather together in peace and harmony to listen to some music which was 'wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats' (Section 1 63, The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act) , that in some other situations would be considered illegal and dangerous. Skye's Mylo proved that the local talent was alive and kicking. The Audiobullys were late, but well worth waiting for. The Scratch Perverts were magnificent. But it really started to kick off when Carl Cox took over the decks. Here was one of the original 'superstar' DJ's demonstrating how, over a decade ago, he became one of the highest paid people in the country to lay a slice of vinyl on a record player. -

The musicians_______________________________________________________________________ Ross Ainslie Bagpipes & Whistle Ross hails from Bridge of Earn in Perthshire. He began playing chanter at the age of 8 and like Ali Hutton studied under the watchful eye of the late great Gordon Duncan and was a member of the Vale of Atholl pipe band. Ross also plays with Salsa Celtica, Dougie Maclean's band, India Alba, Tunebook, Charlie Mckerron's trio and in a duo with Irish piper Jarlath Henderson. He released his début solo album "Wide Open" in 2013 which was voted 9th out of 50 in the Sunday Herald "The Scottish albums of 2013". He was nominated for "musician of the year" at the Radio 2 folk awards 2013 and also for "Best Instrumentalist" at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2010 and 2012. Ali Hutton Bagpipes & Whistle Ali, from Methven in Perthshire, was inspired at the age of 7 to take up the bagpipes and came up through the ranks at the Vale of Atholl pipe band. He was taught alongside Ross Ainslie by the late, great Gordon Duncan and has gone on to become a successful multi‐instrumentalist on the Scottish music scene. He has produced and co‐produced several albums such as Treacherous Orchestra’s “Origins”, Maeve Mackinnon's “Don't sing love songs”, The Long Notes’ “In the Shadow of Stromboli” and Old Blind Dogs’ “Wherever Yet May Be”. Ali is also currently a member of Old Blind Dogs and the Ross Ainslie band but has played with Capercaillie, Deaf Shepherd, Emily Smith Band, Dougie Maclean, Back of the Moon and Brolum amongst many others.
