Since the work of J.J. Heckel (1846-1849), the number of valid species has increased significantly and the systematic status of many of the species has changed, and reorganization and updating of the published information has become essential. Here we take the opportunity to provide a new and updated checklist of freshwater fishes of Iran based on literature and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history and new fish collections. This article lists 288 species in 107 genera, 28 families, 22 orders and 3 classes reported from different Iranian basins. However, presence of 23 reported species in Iranian waters needs confirmation by specimens. -

In this study, we investigated the mechanism by which two small cyprinid fishes (H. leucisculus and H. bleekeri) coexist by analyzing their niche segregation and morphological differences in the upper Yangtze River. Morphological analysis indicated that H. leucisculus has posteriorly located dorsal fins, whereas H. bleekeri has a more slender body, bigger eyes, longer anal fin base, and a higher head. Niche segregation analysis showed spatial and trophic niche segregation between these two species: on the spatial scale, H. leucisculus was more widely distributed than H. bleekeri, indicating that H. leucisculus is more of a generalist in the spatial dimension; on the trophic scale, H. bleekeri had a wider niche than H. leucisculus. Accepted 15 December, 2011 Geometric morphometric methods using computer software is a more statistically powerful method of assessing changes in the anatomy than are traditional measurements of lengths. The aim of the study was to investigate whether changes in the size and shape Paradiplozoon sp. permanent attachment clamps could be used to determine the duration of the organsism’s life-cycle in situ . A total of 149 adult Paradiplozoon sp. ectoparasites were recovered from Labeobarbus aeneus and Labeobarbus kimberlyensis in the Vaal Dam. The software tool tpsDIG v.2.1 was used on six digitised landmarks placed at the junctures between the sclerites of the attachment clamps from digital micrographs. The tpsSmall v. 2.0 and Morphologika 2 v. 2.5 software tools were used to perform principal component analysis (PCA) on this multivariate dataset. The PCA analysis indicated that the increase in size and linear change in shape of the selected landmarks, were significant predictors of the sampling season. This study suggests that it takes one year for the permanent attachment clamps of a Paradiplozoon sp. -

SEM study of Diplozoon kashmirensis (Monogenea, Polyopisthocotylea) from Crucian Carp, Carassius carassius Shabina Shamim, Fayaz Ahmad Department of Zoology, University of Kashmir, Srinagar – 190 006, Kashmir, J&K, India ABSTRACT Using Scanning Electron Microscopy the external morphology of the helminth parasite Diplozoon kashmirensis (Monogenea, Diplozoidae) from the fish Carassius carassius is described herein for the first time. The present study is a part of the parasitological work carried out on the fishes of Jammu and Kashmir. These fish helminthes are ectoparasites, blood feeding found on gills of fishes. They have extraordinary body architecture due to their unique sexual behavior in which two larval worms fuse together permanently resulting in the transformation of one X shaped duplex individual. Oral sucker of the prohaptor has a partition giving it a paired appearance. The opisthohaptor present on hind body contains four pairs of clamps on each haptor of the pair, a pair of hooks and a concave terminal end. Body is composed of tegmental folds to help the worms in fixing to the gills. This type of strategy adapted for parasitic life in which two individuals permanently fuse into a single hermaphrodite individual without any need to search for mating partner and presence of highly sophisticated attachment structures, shows highest type of specialization of diplozoid monogeneans. In this study we used SEM to examine the surface topography of Diplozoon kashmiriensis, thereby broadening our existing knowledge of surface morphology of fish helminthes. However, little is known of its reproductive information regarding spawning pattern and season that could possibly explain its success as an invasive species. This research is the first presentation of its reproductive characteristics, which was conducted based on 235 individuals collected monthly throughout a year from Sefid River, in the southern Caspian Sea basin. Age, sex ratio, fecundity, oocytes diameter and gonado-somatic index were calculated. Regression analyses were used to find relations among fecundity and fish size, gonad weight (Wg) and age. The mature males and females were longer than 93.0 and 99.7mm in total length, respectively (+1 in age). The average egg diameter ranged from 0.4mm (April) to 1.1mm (August). Spawning took place in August, when the water temperature was 23 to 26°C. -

We evaluated the status of the fi sh community based on surveys with multi- mesh gillnet, trap net, and benthic fyke-net between May 2009 and April 2012. In addition, we evaluated the change in the community using historical data (1952–2010) describing the fi sh community and fi shery harvest. The current fi sh community is dominated by small-sized fi shes, including Pseudorasbora parva , Rhinogobius giurinus , Micropercops swinhonis , Hemiculter leucisculus , and Rhinogobius cliffordpopei . -

Our results indicated that Hemiculter leucisculus populations in China were clearly divided into two groups. The first group (Group 1) included the populations of the Yangtze River and its surrounding areas (including the Qiantangjiang, Lingjiang, Jiulongjiang, and Minjiang rivers); the second group (Group 2) contained local populations from southern China (including the Nanliujiang, Zhujiang, Wanquanhe, Qianjiang, and Nandujiang rivers). The Korean Hemiculter eigenmanni differed in its cytochrome b gene sequence by 0.6-1.0% from the Chinese H. leucisculus (Group 1), which inhabited the Yangtze River and its surrounding areas, suggesting they were phylogenetically close and likely to be the same species. The Korean H. leucisculus differed from the Chinese H. leucisculus (both Groups 1 and 2) by 8.1-9.5%, indicating a very distant phylogenetic relationship; however, the Korean H. leucisculus differed from Hemiculter bleekeri by only 0.5-0.7%, showing intraspecific nucleotide differences. The ITS2 (624 bp) and 5.8S-ITS2-28S (720 bp) sequences obtained were phyloge- netically compared with some previously published ITS2 sequences of diplozoids by the neighbor joining (NJ), maximum likelihood (ML) and maximum persimony (MP) methods. All the present specimens are identified as Paradiplozoon skrjabini Akhmerov, 1974 from the present morpholog- ical and molecular studies. -

A total of 46 A. manyasensis were examined for the presence of the helminth. The helminth was identified as Paradiplozoon homoion (Monogenea: Diplozoidae) and occurred on the gills of host fish. A total of 115 specimens of P. homoion infected 32 of 46 fish examined, with prevalence and mean intensity of infection of 69.57% (41.67% in Summer to 90.00% in Winter) and 3.59 (1.00 in Summer to 6.22 in Winter) respectively. Additionally, prevalence and mean intensity of infection was calculated per seasons, host size and sex. The highest values for prevalence and intensity of infection were found in winter for P. homoion. To our knowledge, this is the first ichthyoparasitological study for A. manyasensis in Turkey. This is also the first record of P. homoion from this host fish and locality. Having genetic characterisation at the disposal of researchers has produced mostly use‑ ful, and arguably more objective conclusions. However, there are several groups for which limited genetic information is available and, coupled with the lack of standardised protocols, renders molecular study of these groups challenging. The Diplozoidae are fascinating and unique monogeneans parasitizing mainly freshwater cyprinid fshes in Europe, Asia and Africa. This group was studied from a molecular aspect since the turn of the century and as such, limitations and variability concerning the use of these techniques have not been clearly defned. In this review, all literature and molecular information, primarily from online databases such as GenBank, were compiled and scrupulously analysed for the Diplozoidae. This was done to review the information, detect possible pitfalls, and provide a “checkpoint” for future molecular studies of the family. Hindrances detected are the availability of sequence data for only a limited number of species, frequently limited to a single sequence per species, and the heavy reliance on one non‑coding ribosomal marker (ITS2 rDNA) which is difcult to align objectively and displays massive divergences between taxa.
