Your contributions were fantastic! Sowing for Eternity. Eternal Seed. Beyond. Given. Trinity. However, the overwhelming consensus was to stick with Bible Society Magazine, as that name says it all. So, welcome to Bible Society Magazine issue 2. We will continue fine-tuning the look and feel of the different sections of our magazine. I mentioned in the last edition about our Staff Devotion on Wednesdays. Over the past few weeks I have been leading a series on culture. In 2 Timothy 1:13, Paul tells Timothy to ‘hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.’ (NKJV) As I spoke to the Bible Society team across Australia, I painted the picture of a patchwork quilt. All the different squares, different pat- terns, can look mismatched or disjointed up close, but when knitted together they form a magnificent cohesive whole. As Christians we are urged to hold fast to the pattern of words which have been laid down, knitted together, in the Bible and by Christian thinkers, theologians, writers, pastors, leaders, friends, over the centuries since Paul wrote that letter.

  • Pentecostalism and Sustainability
Pentecostalism and sustainability: conflict or convergence? Kylie Sheppard B.Eng(Env) (Hons) This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Murdoch University 2006 Declaration I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research and contains as its main content work which has not previously been submitted for a degree at any tertiary education institution. ……………………………………………………………. Kylie Louise Sheppard ii Abstract Sustainability has become a prominent global project through which peoples and nations are seeking to alleviate poverty and stop environmental degradation. This thesis explores the contribution that Pentecostalism, a global religious movement of some 500 million people, can make to this project at the several levels of practice, political-economy and philosophy. After an initial chapter where the challenges and dimensions of the sustainability project are outlined, the development and characteristics of Pentecostalism as a dynamic global movement are reviewed. This sets the context for a central empirical case study of Citipointe Christian Outreach Centre (a Pentecostal megachurch in Brisbane, Australia). Survey data, content analysis of sermons, and in-depth interviews show how one particular congregation is engaging with the social, economic and environmental issues of sustainability. I conclude that although Citipointe’s engagement with sustainability issues at a practical level is weak, their demonstrated commitment to community building and the congregation’s shared worldview indicate potential for a more constructive engagement. In light of global Pentecostal praxis I suggest that Pentecostalism holds greater potential to engage with sustainability than is being realised at Citipointe. This thesis contributes to our understanding of how and why Pentecostals are already engaging in social, economic and environmental issues.

AUGUST 201 7 FROM AFRICA TO AUSTRALIA! A re-entry journey By Graham and Pam Keen Many of the readers of this magazine have experienced “re-entry” from a foreign culture to the then-current Australian culture. We have been asked to share our story. I suppose that there are many commonalities but also each journey is individual. In our mature years we served three 2-year terms in Africa that totalled just over 7 years out of culture. I include the short home assignment periods because they are not like re-immersing yourself in the home culture. While there certainly is the trauma of traffic and shopping, our focus on home assignment is still in the other place and we know that “we’re outta here” real soon. And meanwhile extremely busy with deputation and family. Upon finishing our time in Malawi (in 2016), we had advice from a number of quarters not to make big decisions quickly but to allow ourselves time to settle. This we were able to do, partly because we owned our own home in Melbourne and partly because we had reached retirement age and so qualified for a pension from our superannuation. What we didn’t know at first was whether this would be sufficient to support us. But we did have to make one big decision quickly—a car. We have family scattered around Australia from Sydney to Kalgoorlie via Adelaide, so we knew that we would be doing a lot of travelling. Therefore within a month we had purchased a car of suitable space and comfort for older limbs to be driving in all day.

Diocesan Council adopted a vision statement and identified values and focus areas to help us achieve it. Our vision statement is: ‘Flourishing faith communities: proclaiming and serving, worshipping and learning.’ We have created several professionally designed summary documents and a YouTube video communicating more information about the vision statement and its accompanying values and key © 2021 Anglican Church Southern Queensland Page 1 of 47 focus areas and actions.
